I saw this article off the AP Wire Service this morning, and thought some on the forum might enjoy the read: "KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? A symbol of Christianity that sits atop church steeples, dangles from necks and hangs on walls is now ending up in the mouths of the faithful, over the objections of some religious officials. A mass-produced chocolate cross is being sold this Easter by Russell Stover Candies Inc. in about 5,000 stores nationwide, which experts say is apparently a first for a major American company. "Obviously they've seen that there's a market for chocolate crosses at Easter," said Lisbeth Echeandia, a consultant for Candy Information Service, which monitors candy industry trends. "I don't see it growing tremendously but I think there would be growth in the Christian market." However, not all Christians are happy about it. Chomping on a chocolate cross can be offensive to some, said Joseph McAleer, a spokesman for the Roman Catholic diocese in Bridgeport, Conn."

is America No. 1?
by Pleasuredome inthis is an interesting article i found.
i guess if you were to ask anyone on a street anywhere in the world what they think is the leading developed country in the world, they'd probably say the us.

I believe the actions and policies of George W. Bush has been a dark period in our current history. His policies have divided this country, and continues to do so. A strong leader brings people together. Like the WT Society, Bush has divided our country into the so-called Red and Blue States. In a matter of days, he squandered the good will expressed by most of the world following 9-11. It?s little wonder we?ve seen USA bashing on the increase. Hopefully we?ll wise up and do better the next time we go the polls.

I no longer attended meetings in the early 1980s, but my JW spouse felt the need to turn me into the body of elders for the gross sin of voting. I had been an elder in the congregation for years, so I had the address of most members, and many JWs throughout the area. I wrote a letter to the Society challenging their stupid dogma, and copied it to every JW address I had on my list. Of interest, no one replied, not even the Society. However I understand that it caused much talk within the rank-n-file, and really ticked my JW spouse off. :-) Of course, we're no longer married!

Armageddon Should Arrive This Year.
by Englishman in1975 came and went and nothing happened.
ah...but then!
when 1975 was looking close some bright spark reminded us that god's last act of creation was when eve was given to adam, so that time delay needed to be added to 1975 before armageddon became due.

The Concept That Holds Jehovah's Witnesses Captive.
by Blueblades init isn't what jehovah's witnesses believe about the bible that has made them captives of a concept.
it is what they believe about the watchtower society that has done it.. there are two things that are necessary to compare.. 1) the society's interpretation of matthew 24:45--47, the most important scripture in watchtower theology.. with.
2) watchtower history as it relates to their interpretation of matthew 24:45--47, the most important event in watchtower history, 1919 jesus's appointment of them as god's organization.. from don cameron's book, "captives of a concept".. if you haven't read it yet, it's right up there with 'crises of conscience'.if you have loved ones that you want to help get out of this organization, this book is the key.. blueblades

This topic is interesting, and can be answered from several perspectives.
- The Watchtower Society is the only true religion.
- The End is very soon, and JWs are the only ones who will survive.
- Questioning the WT is like questioning God, and shows lack of faith.
- Shunning by entire social/family network keeps many captive.
- JW doubts is always a person's weakness and lack of faith.
- Satan will do anything to stumble a JW; must keep the blinders on.
- Observed wrong doing in org is imperfect humans, not fault of WT.
- WT receives "new light," which is different from mistakes or flip flops.
I'm sure there are more concepts that holds JWs captive, and some of the ones I've listed have already been posted by others.

I know some have had an AHA! moment where everything has made some kind of intuitive sense,,but they can't be discribed only felt.
In 1987 I attended a two-day conference that was mostly made up of former Witnesses. It was the first time I had been in a group like that, and I really enjoyed the fellowship. During the final session folks were leaving and wishing each other well, and for whatever reason I nearly went to pieces. I ran to my car as the tears streamed like a waterfall.
During the 6-hour drive home, I saw EVERYTHING from a different prospective, and felt a calm like I?ve never had before. I wasn?t looking for an ?AHA! Moment? but I think I understand when others speak of it.
From a professional perspective, I can suggest that this was an emotional release, etc. That's all well and good, but I sure didn't see it coming, and will never forget the experience!

I think many people grow up as JWs, and have family members who are JWs, but don't associate themselves. When asked about what they believe, they still believe the Witness teachings and consider it their religion. That happens a lot in the more main-stream religions, but not so with high-control groups. If Michael Jackson believes the teachings of the WT, and if asked what is his religion, what should he say? In matters of religion, I think we are what we believe even if we're not a card-carring JW, Baptist, etc. It would have been better if Jesse Jackson said MJ has the Jehovah Witness belief, but does not attend their meetings. But why would a person who has never been a JW say such a thing?

Witness Sister Alone At Our Door on Sunday ..No knock ..Just Silence
by adelmaal init was pretty odd.
we had a jw sister come to our door on sunday by herself.
she walked up really slowly and quietly.

JAVA
I've done that before, lots of times, it was a fake knock.
Thank God -- I thought I was the only JW in the world that did such things! It's nice to know there were other creative folks in the flock.

I've been thinking about what the late Joseph Campbell said about myths.
I saw some of the Bill Moyer's interviews with Joseph Campbell, called "The Power of Myth" as I was mentally leaving the Tower. Looking back on it, I believe Campbell's work helped me on the journey more than any single thing at that time. It helped me see behind the Watchtower curtain, and beyond the search for a true religion. Campbell said, "Those who think they know, don't know; and those who think they don't know, knows."
As a JW, that wouldn't make sense, but on the other side of the Tower, it was my revelation! Thanks for bringing Campbell into this discussion.
