nsrn -- That's too funny, and you're really showing your age. :) I remember the blue "Truth Book" like it was yesterday. Remember the cost--25 cents. Yep, you could become a JW for just a quarter (and giving the Tower full control over your life). What a bargain!

WHO HAS READ C.O.C.? WHAT WAS AN EYE OPENER FOR YOU?
by juni ini am half way through the book and am finding some surprising information.
i was always told that the gb met on wed. and prayed before considering their decisions on things, but was i surprised that different ones were given the assignments and to use if they wanted other "worldly" written things and then were off on their own to work independantly or w/another to come up w/the book, etc.. also, the malawi and mexico difference in treatment.
brothers lied to escape military service in mexico.

I think anyone that's been around the JWs or who's been a JW owes it to themselves to read Crisis of Conscience from cover to cover. Folks can be part of forums like this, but if they truly want to understand the inter-workings of the Watchtower Society--it's a must read.
Apocalype Delayed, by Jim Penton is another excellent read about the history of the movement and the various presidents. Penton holds a doctorate in history, and I think it's better written then Crisis, as one might expect.
These books merit my highest praise for their honest and thorough examination of the Watchtower movement. Don't leave home without them!

The JW's are a non-issue....
by upside/down inthink about it.... if it wasn't for the fact that most of us are/were dubs...we wouldn't even notice their existence.. i used to say that when i was a dub (to the scorn of all)...when they would talk about the wt & aw being the most widely "read" (they took liberty with the word "distributed") mags on earth bullsh*t!.
except for my visiting jwd... there is almost no evidence of the existence of the dubs in my life...they are a non-issue!.
they are a lot of drama bout nuthin...really...if you'll step back and notice.... agree or disagree?.

I remember thinking about this during the large dis. assemblies in the '60s and early '70s when the Tower would have a statement read that was some type of announcement to the world. I used to wonder how many nations and governments really cared about the Tower's all important message.
Does the Tower still make these so-called proclamations during dis. assemblies?

Do you feel old?
by MsMcDucket innow, that i'm in my forties...heading toward fifty, fast; i feel old.
i feel like i've wasted a good part of my life with religious hang-ups!
i think that i would have done a lot of things differently had i not been raised the way i was.

** I've sorta tossed the idea around that if I reach age 40 and things haven't changed, it might be time to, in the words of Jimi Hendrix, to "meet you on the next one (world), and don't be late". **
DanTheMan--I like the one by Jerry Garica of the Greatful Dead. "If I knew I was going to get this old I would have taken better care of myself." Hang in there friend, life can be heaven or hell with or without another. BTW, have you burned anymore WTs while eating pizza? :)) -

Gail Sheehy (she wrote "Passages") has a new book called, "Sex and the Seasoned Woman -- Pursuing the Passionate Life." I saw her at a book signing a few years ago, and I'm fairly sure she's older than me (59). This is from the jacket cover:
"What makes a seasoned woman? Time. A seasoned woman is spicy. She has been marinated in life experience. Like a complex wine, she can be alternately sweet, tart, sparkling, mellow. She is both maternal and playful. Assured, alluring, and resourceful. She is less likely to have an agenda than a young woman--no biological clock tick-tocking beside her lover's bed, no campaign to lead him to the altar, so rescue fantasies. The seasoned woman knows who she is. She could be any one of us, as long as she is committed to living fully and passionately in the second half of her life, despite failures and false starts. How old is a seasoned woman? As Vera told Auntie Mame, 'Somewhere between forty and death.'"
I'm looking forward to reading her new book when I finish the ones I've already stopped and started. :) -

Watchtower Prophesy Guide: Armagedon by 2000AD
by unclebruce in"year 2000" and "20th century" quotations .
from the watchtower societys cd-rom.
following are watchtower bible & tract society predictions of armageddon in the 20th century as found through a word search of the wtss cd-rom.. the society also quoted many secular sources that emphasized crisis in the 20th century.. such secular crisis-quotes would have reinforced in jw minds the prophecies of the world ending in the 20th century.. the following is a list of such secular quotes plus a few more of the wtss own comments.

G'day to you too unc,
I think your friend is correct about the Tower being able to make it on their own without followers. They've been investing in worldly goods for years while shaming followers who need to work overtime to pay the bills. I look forward to the day when the Tower has to pay taxes as a non-religion business. I wonder how many JWs will see the light and sue God's Organization for fraud? I just wanted to add: "So many lawyers, so little time."

The Watchtower Society is nothing without followers believing "The End Is Near!" The Tower has played that tune too many times, and it's starting to show in various ways. The Internet is a force that won't allow the Tower to hide their many failures and cover-ups. I'm a born-again believer about "The End Is Near"--the end of the Watchtower Society as we now know it!

you don't believe in god... ever find yourself praying?
by Calliope ini'm not sure whether there is a god or not.
so far as i can tell, there isn't much evidence to support his existence... .
but sometimes i find myself in what appears to be a prayer.

As an agnostic, I don't find myself praying--even when I'm not thinking about it. :) However, I do find myself saying things from time to time to some loved ones who have died. For example, "well, dad--what do you think of this mess."
I don't know if there is life after death. I do know that there is no solid evidence to support life after death, or for that matter God. However, speaking to the dead has been around for aeons, maybe it's part of the collective unconscious (a little Carl Jung theory to explain my behavior).

Promotional One-Liners for "Crisis of Conscience"
by Clam ini've just re-read c-o-c, a book which never ceases to amaze me.
on the book's jacket there are the inevitable short reviews on the back.
not sure what the exact name for them is but you get them on most books and they often resort to hyperbole, eg " a rip roaring, gut busting, bodice ripping, roller coaster of a novel" .

"A well written and researched book about Jehovah's Witnesses, written by a former member of their Governing Body. The author left their world headquaters and has been shunned because he questioned the 1914 date the religion uses as a foundation belief. The book is honest, factual, and written without malice--a must read for anyone wanting to know the inside workings of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society."
