Norman,
Thanks for putting this together; it's one of countless examples of the Tower speaking with their fork tongue. The Watchtower makes the ancient Jewish Pharisees look like flaming liberals.

my observation is that persons who 1) heal/adjust the most rapidly from their jw experience and 2) seem to have the most joy in life are those who read, read, read, in pursuit of what i call nourishment for the spirit.
i've really enjoy the pithy aphorisms you use here, which suggests you've distilled some wisdom from somewhere.
i'm going to ask your help in this thread.
Hello Tina,
To leave crutches aside and explore what is unknown...I realize not everyone can or wants to do this.I mean we're talking total personal responsibility, and ethical responsibility to others.
I work with many professionals with advanced degrees, many who are Christian. I don't believe most of them use faith as a crutch of the unknown or to excuse themselves from ethical responsibility. I think most of them believe because of social influences more than avoiding ethical responsibility. Of course we can't really get into the mind of another to determine beyond doubt why others do and believe what they do.
However, when I hear folks like Jerry Falwell, it tends to refute my above thoughts. BTW, I'm working on those earring; one or two hoops per earring?

Hi Jerry,
and a close look at St. Augustine who believed that sin was transmitted via semen and that we are all infected thereby.
NPR news was on while reading your comments, and as luck would have it, the program had a small segment about St. Augustine. The program said St. Augustine enjoyed the company of numerous women (I wonder if this is genetic with politicians). Adding their thoughts to yours, I conclude that Augustine thought he was perfect and wanted to pass perfection on to as many as possible.
we're pleased to tell you that the watchtower victims memorial is back online.

Hello Lee,
Thanks for letting us know. I thought it was a great idea, and was disappointed when David closed the site. I'll be sure to add it to a few search engines, too. Thanks again!
these days it's pretty clear that the jw organization is running on autopilot.
charles taze.
russell, joe booze rutherford, nathan knorr and freddie franz all had a certain amount of vision.
You Know's autopilot remarks were:
So, it stands to reason that once the good news of the kingdom is preached to Jehovah's satisfaction, in advance of Christ's arrival, that once Jesus does arrive and all hell breaks loose
JAVA's autopilot response is:
Don’t miss Jehovah Will Murder Billions

Hello Tina,
I'm always amazed at how people want another belief system handed to them. It's a personal journey that takes time ,effort, personal responsibility. I think some folks are simply intellectually lazy.
You made some interesting comments about personal beliefs. To a large extent I believe most people except the beliefs they grew up with or beliefs they picked up as young adults. Unless there is a reason to change, that works because their religion isn't weird and out of step with the larger society. Yeah, I think it's easy to become spiritually lazy when things work and there is little reason to change. However, folks exiting the Tower step out of the comfort zone, and need to replace the void that's left. They usually do that in the following ways:
After they pass through the foolishness of the "where else can you go" stage, the road forks 5 ways.
Most exiting JWs start off on one of the above paths. They might stay there for awhile or skip over to another path. It's all part of filling the void left when leaving the Tower. Some journeys require more effort than others, and even the "intellectually lazy" can find a path defined by religionist before them.
LOL @ your "earrings" suggestion--good one!
i've added a news panel to the main page at http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/forum/default.asp which should show jw related news.. let me know what you think.
Nice addition, Simon. It adds but doesn't interere with the opening format, and lurkers might find it useful, too. You're right, it could also be fodder for novel threads.

Interesting thread--thanks!
For a spiritual read, I enjoyed (and still do) Siddhartha, by Hermann Hesse. It's a classic of one person's journey through life, and reminds me of the hills and valleys traveled as former Witnesses. Hesse wrote many books, but this one's a must read.
Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism, by John Shelby Spong. Spong is a retired Anglican Bishop speaking out about the problems fundamentalism creates for believers in exile. As many reading this forum knows, I'm a born-again agnostic, but this is one Christian book I recommend.
larc: You said,
I think for some Witnesses, that ignorance is bliss and they should be left alone.
I disagree for the following reasons: As you know, Jehovah's Witnesses are not just another religion following their bliss. A religion that enforces shunning harms others. A religion that interferes with medical treatment kills people. A religion that covers up child/sexual/domestic abuse needs exposed whenever possible. Ignorance might be blissful for some, but this religion harms, kills, and abuses. That Bad News of the Watchtower Kingdom should be preached whenever possible.
Just because a Nazi is happy and well adjusted thinking Hitler is a great guy doesn't mean we shouldn't mess with his myth because Nazism works for him. It's also not up to me to replace a failed myth. "True Believers" can always find another ism to follow without my help.
That's my Sermon on the Mount, Brother larc. Now what shall we do with the golden calf?
