Yeah, time has a way of moving along when one is not captive to the myth of "running ahead of the Organization." Instead of awaiting the Tower's next flip-flop, you've completed a year of college--way to go! I feel sorry for many ex-JWs who remain stalled after exiting, who don't pursue a goal of some sort. Leaving the Tower is one thing, but filling the void takes courage, too.

by Elsewhere inhttp://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/asia/story/0,4386,261720,00.html

it says the threat from the north makes it necessary for all south koreans, regardless of religious beliefs, to do military service.

Since the 1940s, South Korea has imprisoned 10,000 conscientious objectors, almost all of them Jehovah's Witnesses.
I don't think a nation is better off by jailing folks who are conscientious objectors. If a JW or Quaker or anyone else believes it is wrong to kill another, I believe a country is better served if this group performs another form of public service. Sticking people in jail is a drain to society, whereas working in a hospital or cleaning streets and neighborhoods benifits everyone.
On the other hand, if one claims to be a conscientious objector and refuses any service, jail might be the only alternative. Any country has a right and obligation to defend itself, and most citizens are willing to do their part. However, it's sad when young people are killed and kill because of poor leadership. I don't believe there is an easy answer to this issue . . .

lonliness after leaving
by orbison11 injust wondering, did any of you become hermit like after leaving.
i see many of you are able to carry on.
maybe with the help of non-jw family, etc.. but for me, i lost all family and i am having a hard time with acquiring friends, although i have many many aquaintances.

I've been out for many years, but "loneliness after leaving" the Tower is an issue for some folks. Many of the of the JW rank-n-file are not all that outgoing in the first place; add to that forced shunning of family and friends, and what do you have--"loneliness." Most spent years, and some a lifetime, looking down on non-JWs. It just takes a little time and effort reconnecting with the larger society again, but most do it if they want to.
You'll never fully get over being shunned by close family and friends, but reaching out to others is better than allowing the Tower to sentence you to solitary confinement. Trust, or a lack thereof, seems to go with loneliness after exiting. Again, it takes time to develope relationships, but most become normal on this side of the Tower.

When rational thinking kicks in after exiting the Tower, it's so easy to see how "silly" our mindless-JW actions really were. I joined the Dayton-Downtown Y a few years ago, and go every other day after work. In the process I've lost several pounds, look and feel better, and the health benifits are numerous.
While working out, I often think about the mind-numbing hours and years spent at JW meetings in order to distrust all but the Tower. Most of us could have earned college degrees, and/or improved our health and self-esteem by attending college and carrying gym bags instead of bookbags.
Maybe I enjoy the Y today a little more so because of my background . . .

Those of us who frequent this board realize that even healthy people can become depressed from associating with JW's. Could it have been the lack of love and support in the local congregation and in their family circle that caused these folks to go off the deep end ??
Excellent points, Bug. I personally know 3 JWs that committed suicide, and countless JWs who became very depressed as time and reality uncovered the myth.

I haven't been on this forum for some time, but enjoy reading the latest ploys used by the Tower to fleece the flock. From the posts on this thread, it seems the Dubs are no longer willing to empty their pockets and forgo vacations for long assemblies. I still remember sitting in an outdoor ball field for 8 days at one of the international assemblies. Looks like the newer Dubs are wising up a little.

Shouldn't the "Truth" be easy to find?
by JH in.
with so many religions, and only one bible, why is the truth so hard to find?.

"Those who know that they don't know, knows." I believe religion is a concept, not fact. When religion is turned into "Truth," followers fail to realize they really don't know.
It's been months since I've visited--nice seeing some old friends, and the many new folks, too.
