Do You Think “Higher Education “Is All That??
by minimus inas jehovah’s witnesses, we were regularly told how awful a college education is.
i’m no longer associated with the religion but i am not so pro university.
it’s not because i think you are better off without a degree.

High school education in the USA has deteriorated badly. Kids graduate with a bachelor's degree from college and in some cases are no more educated than a high school grad from the 60's. I have first-hand experience from my work history...seeing reports from college grads who had poor grammar, couldn't spell or add columns of numbers. That is simply appalling. However, if the education from kindergarten thru high school does not prepare kids for the work force and adult life, college becomes a necessity.
I do not believe college is the best option for everyone though. I am a strong supporter of the trades...very good livings can be made in plumbing, electrical, construction, etc. And the physical labor is something many prefer and thrive doing.
As for the liberal thinking promoted...part of a good education is opening your mind to all ways of thinking....critical reasoning and coming to grips with personal beliefs. Narrow-mindedness is a form of ignorance...and when acted on produces poor results.

How old is old?
by joey jojo inhaving a conversation with a pimi elder and i asked him how he deals with the fact that he never expected to get old.
i get the feeling that some dubs still have the original generation explanation hard-wired, even though they claim to accept the new version.
so my question is, how old do you have to be to be considered old?

Christmas Trees.
by Lost in the fog inwe are all very familiar with the fact that jws do not celebrate xmas.
we probably used the same speech as we had been told from the platform that since xmas had its roots in paganism everything associated with it was a big no-no.
xmas trees, definitely a no-no!

I was obsessed with hating Christmas as a dub....once out see it as a nice time...pretty stuff, glorious decadent retail....fun foods.....love the lights and sparkly stuff. Never had a tree in my life though....I think about it but nobody would see or enjoy it but me so seems a waste of time and $$$. I do have lights strung up and get other coniferous decoratives.....

That is an assembly hall? Doesn't look very big...but perhaps the photo captures only a small section. But....I certainly hope there are few if any 20 somethings, generation xers, millenials, etc there. They're far better off elsewhere living a real life.

Electric Cordless Yard Tools - Does Anyone Else Use Them?
by RubaDub ini must say, i have had my battery mower, trimmer, blower for about a year now and could not be happier (ryobi 40 volt stuff).
the same battery works in everything.
just plug and play.. yes, they are more expensive to purchase, probably 30% to 50% more than gas.

They are Still preaching against careers!
by LongHairGal ini saw on another forum a post somebody made about the melbourne assembly.
it seems the religion is still knocking full time jobs/careers and saving for retirement.. you would think at this point in time - after thousands of bethelites were sent home; many thousands of rank & file jws are at or near retirement age with no preparation - that the religion would change its tune, but no.
they are still stubbornly sticking to their guns on this issue.. i’m sorry for any young jws who listen to this.. i’m just glad i never followed their advice and certainly would not want to be in any congregation surrounded by these desperate people!.

Gas is less than $2.50 currently in this neck of the woods....in one of the most expensive states of the union. We get to pay hiked prices in other ways however... WTWizard makes some very good points.....

What was the retirement plans you heard brothers talk about if any
by JimmyYoung ini know some would not think about retirement.
i had one brother who would pioneer as he could afford and when he paid off his home he was about to collect social security.
he made enough that his plan was to work two to three days a week and pioneer the rest of the week.

Saving for retirement meant not trusting in Jehovah. Kingdom interest first and everything else will magically fall into your lap. Except thats not the way it works out in reality. My father died without life insurance or savings
...he was a WWI vet so that covered funeral costs...mother left virtually destitute....only his soc sec money and a very very meagher pension. Then there was one pioneering girl I remember figuring the best way was to earn just under the cap of gross income where you have to pay income taxes...this avoiding support to Uncle Sam.
