How many of you atheists, agnostics, deists are celebrating Xmas??
by SweetBabyCheezits inwe are celebrating xmas this year for the first time.
it's kinda weird because, even though we're doing a xmas tree, decorations, gifts, we're more or less taking the christ out of christmas.
so how about the rest of you non-christian heathens?.

Jesus Christ. (No pun intended.)
Does anyone have a copy of that "Time" poem that used to circulate? It was about some guy who constantly didn't have time for Jehoober, and it ended with him dying and God saying something like, "I always meant to write your name in the Book of Life, but I never found the time." It was supposed to be really ominous, but I always thought it was goofy. -

I'm agnostic, so I treat it as a fun day to give gifts, donate to charity, see (non-Dubby) family, and so on. I haven't done a big tree yet, but I'm planning on doing it next year.
Basically, I do the "fun" parts and leave Christ in the manger where he belongs. ;)

Up until very recently, my brother lived around the corner from her. When I'd go down to visit, we'd often see her walking her dogs or shopping in the local IGA. I won't give you the gory details, but suffice it to say that thick television makeup does her 70-year-old face a lot of help. She also has pretty visible face-lift scars near her ears and along her hairline, at least when she's not wearing makeup, so she probably isn't as big on her looks as you are. :/ It must be very hard to be in the spotlight like that and have to constantly appear so perfect whenever a camera might be around.

I love that show! It's one of my favorite sitcoms on television right now. ;)
My favorite game to play while watching is to Google all of the "experts" he has on the show. You usually get a lot of people affiliated with David Icke, Alex Jones, Jeff Rense, and so on. The "researchers" he employs are washed-up television presenters who film all of their segments on soundstages. It's all good fun and not something to be taken seriously.
What irritates me is that he takes things that have a grain of truth and blows them up into something ridiculous. For example, I grew up near Lyme, Connecticut and absolutely, 100% believe that Lyme disease is connected to Plum Island. But watching that episode was so asinine. First, if you know the geography of the area, you know that his big, overly dramatic "boat chase" scene took place in about 10 feet of water right along the shore, and the patrol boats "chasing" him are completely normal in the area. The "Montauk monster" has been shown to be nothing more than a dead, bloated animal. The reasoning behind the move to Kansas were never explained, even though it's all been made very public. It was just a shoddy attempt and telling a story, especially if you know anything about the situation.
The ignorance continues among former cult followers. I guess some just can't help it. Must be in their DNA.
No, it's just that most of us have learned to pay attention to all information sources, not just a select few, and we know better than to put our trust into money-hungry fame-whores like Alex Jones.
Of course, I look forward to being told what a mindless sheep I am. :)

Maybe it's just because I live in a predominantly secular area, but it's actually weird now to go to religious funerals -- complete reverse of when I was a JW. Even funerals in churches aren't very focused on theology. As others have said, the funeral director usually serves as an emcee of sorts, and then friends and family deliver eulogies or readings. I read a secular poem at someone's funeral a few months back, and it was very nice and provided a lot of uplift and hope for the attendees. Secular funerals seem much more personal and focused on celebrating the person who died.

Are You For Or Against The Death Penalty?
by minimus ini clearly am for it if it's proven without a doubt that a person murdered another in cold blood.
recently, in connecticut, a man was convicted of killing 2 young girls and their mother.
the animal raped them and almost killed the defenseless husband/father who could do nothing while these atrocities were being carried out in his own home!.

For some, I might propose, the prospect of rotting in jail for 25+ years might be a greater deterrent than a quick jab in the arm and its all over.
A lot of people here in Connecticut who were in favor of the death penalty for Steven Hayes changed their minds once it came out that he smiled when the jury recommended it. He had told his attorneys that he was terrified of spending his life in prison, especially due to being a target for other inmates, and he wanted to die as quickly as possible. So, in an effort to punish him, the jury gave him exactly what he wanted. Something to think about.

If You Had To Have A Religion Which Would You Not Mind Belonging To?
by minimus inif you were even born into a religion, would you feel that you had to get out?
( the only religion that i know of where people get out and often never go to any other religion is the jw religion)..

I wouldn't mind being a non-theist Friend (Quaker). At least in the more liberal conferences, they're quite welcoming of agnostics and atheists.

I have a "reverse shunning" story, about someone who shunned herself when she encountered me while I was still in...
I had a paper route as a teenager and was going around collecting payments. An elder's daughter who had recently been DFed opened the door at the exact moment her worldly boyfriend walked through the living room behind her in nothing but a skimpy towel. She looked like she was ready to die. She stammered "Uh, uh, uhhhhhh" and then slammed the door on me. I never said a word because I was so shocked -- more at the sight of him than anything else! And then, as I walked down the corridor of her apartment building, I heared her burst out laughing in her apartment, and the laughter kept getting louder and more genuine.
At the time, I thought that was an example of her being so horrible and evil, but in hindsight, I give her a lot of credit for it. At least she was able to laugh it off. :) I hope to have that same reaction if I'm ever shunned!
