  13% of the Governing Body is of african descent. About the same as U.S. population according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_United_States.

  True...except, just under 25% of the U.S. population is non-white, so where are the Asians, Hispanics, etc.? And do they not proclaim themselves to be an international organization -- in a world where whites make up only 20-25% of the population? And isn't the greatest growth happening in Africa and Latin America?

  If they want to claim to be an international, color-blind church, they have to start acting like it, even if it's just for PR purposes. Otherwise, this is just more proof that they're little more than a historically white-dominated American group with minor satellites elsewhere.

  Why move magazine printing from the U.S. to Canada?

  the january 2011 issues were printed in canada so the change was made.. the wts spent millions of dollars enlarging and updating the printing operations in wallkill so they could consoladate the book and magazine printing at the one location.

  it was in 2004 that they stopped the presses in brooklyn and began book production in wallkill.. now just 6 years later they suppossedly sold several of their presses from the u.s. and canada, bought a large new very fast press for canada and had to enlarge the printery there to accomodate it.. now the canada branch will print over 260 million magazines for the u.s.each year and all the expansion done in wallkill was for nothing.. does anyone know why this was done?.

  My dad works in publishing, and I know from what he's told me that there's actually more savings now in farming out work than in running your own equipment. Most newspapers now are only printing 50% or less of their daily runs; everything else is done by other papers (often including local rivals) through contracting. For example, the publication he's at does all the pre-prints for nearly 70% of newspapers within a 75-mile radius -- the rest all sold off their presses. So, if the WTBTS is like other magazine and newspaper publishers, they're probably going to sell off the bulk of their New York printing presses, which will save them a ton of money in service contracts and general maintenance. In that sense, it's not really for nothing, because they can repurpose the structural modifications (for example, turning the press floor into warehouse space) and make a pretty penny off of selling the equipment itself.

  Anyone Know JW's who Donated Inheritances, Estates,$$$ to WT Society ?

  if so - without divulging any names , approximately how much was donated to the wt society ?

  if you are aware of approximate amounts.

  as many know the wt society yearly puts out calls in their publications for witnesses to donate trust funds, wills, inheritances, estates, jewelry, cars and whatever else they have to promote the aleged " kingdom interests " in furthering the " good news " around the world.. personally i feel it's all been a scam to continue exercising control over witnesses by influencing them to financially deprive themselves so the wt society can continue it's operations.

  I gave way, way too much. I don't even want to imagine what my mother gave. It's scary.

  I know of an older couple that willed all of their assets to the WTBTS because both of their sons were disfellowshipped. That's the only example I can think of at the moment. I'm sure there were others who simply didn't make it known.

  To offer up the fact that he was "not an active JW" as exculpatory evidence in defense of JW's is as illegitimate as offering up the fact some ex-servicement who flip out later and kill people are "not active servicemen" in an attempt to dismiss PTSD brought on by the experiences these experienced while in the military.

  There is a marked difference between saying that someone should not be referred to as a Jehovah's Witness and saying that someone could not have been impacted by their experience as one. I don't see anyone doing the latter. I'm not seeing how asking for accurate research is an attempt to write off any emotional issues he might have had. The point is that if one news outlet (a CBS affiliate) has already retracted their reporting that he was once a JW, there is valid reason to show some restraint before we decide that he definitely was one and had emotional issues as a result of it.

  Again, I'm not doubting on a personal level that he had some tie and was affected by it. I just think it's irresponsible for some ex-JW news sites to be building an entire story out of one line in a news article printed by two minor outlets, one of which has already taken their reporting back.

  Two out of three are also taught by the WT$...

  I know I've been out 5 years, but I'm pretty sure they don't teach that no one should ever follow a religion, including their own, and that there should never be humans living on earth, now or in the future.

  He was definitely not an active JW. He listed his religion as "Atheist" on his MySpace profile (now taken down) and his personal website contains many lines about how religion is the root of all evil, evolution must be taught, mankind should be permanently wiped out, etc. (See here for a few excerpts.) He also had been arrested multiple times in previous years and was a well-known political activist in his community, both of which would have gotten him kicked out had he still been in.

  Only two media sources have mentioned anything about any possible JW ties, and those were both small, local outlets far removed from the area -- and one of them has completely pulled the story where they reported that. If he had any connection to the JWs, major sources have either found it not notable enough to be covered or completely unverifiable. (For what it's worth, I do believe that he was probably raised as a JW or something similar. But he wasn't an active one.)

  I think that some ex-JW websites are taking this and running with it without any verification, which just looks bad for the ex-JWs in my view. It's hard to extrapolate an entire "The Dubs Made Him Do It" theory from one line in a news article that has not been verified and is based on hearsay. And even if he had past ties, to call him a JW is just plain wrong based on his own statements.

  Was the legend about Smurfs being demonic just an urban legend, or was it mentioned in the literature?

  i never heard about the smurfs being evil until i joined the forum.

  but when i look in the volume library, the word doesn't come up.

  i was wondering if anyone ever heard mention of it in the literature--as in, was it an official position?.

  They never mentioned them by name, but ambiguous "be careful with the toys your children play with/music they listen to/shows they watch" anecdotes weren't exactly uncommon. You could often figure out what/who they were talking about, especially with musical groups. I bet if you went back through publications of the '80s, you could find something thinly veiled and pointed in their direction.

  I've always intentionally used screennames that are unmodified dictionary words so that they're not as likely to always lead back to me. :)
  
  A search for "palimpsest" leads you to the Wikipedia entry on palimpsests. Might help to explain why I picked it for ex-JW forums. ;)

  Meeting topics that cover sex

  occassionally the mr will say that "some visitors are shocked because we will talk about sex, even with children in attendance.

  " what exactly are they talking about in these meetings.

  things like "don't masturbate" or things like if you position yourself like this, and your woman like this while having sex, then you're fornicating?.
