Why Does God Need A Name Anyway?
by Room 215 inif he is the lord god almighty, solely the creator and sustainer of the universe, why the need for a name other than that?
doesn't monotheism require belief that the other, named gods worshipped by the pagans don't exist in a place beyond the imaginations of their worshippers?
why then the need for a name, if it isn't to reinforce a differentiation between him and lesser gods?

Circuit Letters/Numbers
by Palimpsest ini'm wondering if anyone has a list of circuit letters/numbers?
or can explain a bit more how they work?.
i can never remember if i was in connecticut circuit 2a or 2b (i think it was b), and i've always wondered if our "2" meant the second circuit in our state or the second circuit in our district.. i don't know why i care, but i've always been curious.

Being friendly and cordial. Treating them like human beings. Debunking their ideas about all apostates being mean and angry.

Music-related jw urban myths
by rebel8 ini was researching a few....whew...did they ever bother to *think for themselves* or did they just believe every demon-related rumor they heard?
(rhetorical question).
stevie nicks was a witch.

I think the whole "Stevie Nicks is a witch!" thing came from her clothing and the fact that "Rhiannon" is loosely based on a mythical Welsh goddess. I remember being told several times to stop wearing broomstick skirts because "they look pagan." Silliness. And she's come out pretty aggressively in saying that she's not Wiccan and that she wishes people would stop saying that.
The one I always heard was that every time Michael Jackson grabbed his crotch, it was his way of saying F-U to Jehovah. He personally debunked that in interviews, but Dubs still believe it.

I've invited the Witnesses to my house
by maksym inim recent here and thought i would properly introduce myself.
i have posted a few times but mostly i like to read because i gather good insight into reaching the hearts of jehovahs witnesses.
the short of it is i was born into a large family of jehovahs witnesses.

I think the Steve Hassan approach is a pretty good route. I just don't have the book.
It would be interesting to see what, if anything, he'd have to say about Liberty U. Most anti-cult writers aren't exactly fans.

Why do Witnesses think they preach the "Good News"
by sabastious inthe "good news" is a heavy buzz term that any witness will need no elaboration to understand unquestionably.
it seems illogical, to me, for the witnesses to call their message the "good news.".
i used to go door to door with a message of "whatever you are doing right now is wrong and will get you killed unless you preach door to door like me.

I know that all of the Spanish-speaking Central American branches are being consolidated into the Mexican branch, but does anyone know what's up with the English-speaking Caribbean branches? I know several Bethelites in the region and have spent time myself at one of the branches, so I'm curious about what's going to happen. It seems weird to me that a full list of closings/mergers hasn't leaked yet.

It's probably too late, but if anyone else is reading... http://www.jehovahswitnessrecovery.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8358
I would gladly take materials off anyone's hands for this project. It's growing nicely but we still need a lot of items.

What Did You Not Do Because You Were A Jehovah's Witness That You Wanted To Do?
by minimus ini didn't go to college and of course, "higher education" was never recommended.
still, i never felt terribly deprived because of not going further in my education.. yet, i did wish that i could've had "normal" aka "worldly friends".
i wish that as witnesses, we could've been better integrated with other people.

Long way to go for a corny joke, LostGeneration. ;)
I wish I'd had fun as a teenager. I don't have many good teenage stories like so many of my friends do. And, of course, dating earlier.

"In science, empirical evidence always trumps theory"
by botchtowersociety inthis article is buy someone that has, in the past, been a big proponent of runaway agw.
that he has changed his mind is, i think, significant.
he says that co2's contribution to global warming is too small to really matter, and that the the climate models have been wrong.. climate models go cold.

Also, if you go to the original article at http://opinion.financialpost.com/2011/04/07/climate-models-go-cold/, there are some interesting comments. Someone makes the valid point that while Evans has studied and earned degrees in "science," he is by his own admission not trained or proficient in climatology. I think people salivate whenever they see that a "scientist!" has come out against global warming, but I'll be a lot more impressed when it's the majority of people actually trained in climatology and not people from other fields who are really hobbyists.
