As Elsewhere said, ones that I know had something traumatic in their life. Usually the death of a family member, or a falling out with their church or church leadership.

Twister (the game)
by Mickey mouse inwhen i was a teenager, twister was a popular game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/twister_(game).
we had a couple of elders who used to bang on and on about how bad it was in local needs talks.
they seemed convinced that if a group of young people were playing twister, it was bound to descend into a mass orgy.

Raised out side the JWs, my father said Twister was purely for sex parties, and had no other purpose. I don't remember others opinions.

1 Thessalonians 5:2,3 - General Statement or Powerful Prophecy?
by lepermessiah inafter reading the posts regarding the "special" .
i remember growing up as a kid in the reagan 80's waiting for the ussr to nuke the usa, or vice-versa.
then, with glasnost and perestroika, so many jw's thought the long awaited cry of "peace and security" was imminent!

Misery,
It is interesting you bring this up, I have been having much the same feelings lately. Check this link out, I can't say I completely agree with it but I do find it very interesting.
I still feel the more I read the bible the less I feel it has any meaning for us.

What would this religion look like if.....Revelation was never included?
by maninthemiddle insince it is the largerst contributer to the "7 times" and to the 144k.
this would of couse wipe out 1914 and 1919.. since the wts like to use bible imagery to apply to them selves and modern times, that would basically just leave jesus' words and paul's and others letters .
(daniel too).

I believe the fact that you can tie every major/false doctrine of the JWs to the Book Of Revelation is more proof that the the Book Of Revelation isn't inspired
You said what I was trying to say better than I did.
I guess that even if it wansn't there then they would find something else to mke up.

What type of "Society" do you live in?
by kzjw infrom the perspective of your local kh heirachy, what role does the wtbs play in your real life?
i come to this site as the spouse is a witness, curious to find the answers as to why bible-based babble from the wt can be taken as the truth.
but then i look at the jws my spouse likes and know in my heart that they arent bad people - in fact save one, most i actually like too.

Most Jws don't know the history or care about it. They, like a lot of people are just looking for something better, or are missing something spirtual in their life. She sounds very much like my wife. She lets her concience guide her more than the marketing materials from NY.
Like any group in life there are good and bad. I have really met only a couple of JWs that I truly hate. Almost all I know or have known are very loving people, and all let NY tell them how to ack to varying degrees.
My mother on the other hand is strongly guided by the pages of the watchower, and I feel that no matter how stupid it gets, she wouldn't notice or care. This bothers me more becuause were I ever to be DFd then I don't belive she could see past the Watchtower to care how I really felt, or that my behaviour is in line with real bible standards, even though not WTS standards.

This would also seriously put a dent in the paradise (earth) and great crowd doctrins also. When it comes to trying to explain Revelation much prefer the "I don't Know" answer.
I ask this mainly becuase I think that would put them closer to other mainstream religions, even though none that I know of throw out Revelation, most don't try to make up meanings for it's writings.
What do you think?
And can you think of any other "What ifs"?

God's Love book - Prologue examined
by Mad Sweeney ineventually i would like to do a deconstruction on the entire book but for now, lets start with the prologue, which claims to be written by the governing body of jehovah's witnesses.
if anyone feels this is useful, please let me know.
] in your life and thus keep yourself in gods love .

This is well written, I have one comment, and I don't mean to defend the content, but in a prolouge there shouldn't be a need to defend a statement, the entirety of the rest of the book should have done that.
good catch on the loaded language, I am just beginning to pick up on that now. This really is a horrible book, I recently took the time to read several chapters before I had to put it down and get a Tums.
This on really stand out to me
That same evening, Jesus said:“If you know these things, happy you are if you do them.”—John 13:17
Here he was also talking about love, and putting others before yourself, that was it, not some 192 page rule book.
Thank you for your efforts in this.

A few Random Memorial Observations:
by zarco injohn 3:16 was highlighted for several minutes by the speaker.
the new world translation: for god loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten son, in order that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life.new jerusalem bible "yes, god loved the world so much, that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him, may not die but have eternal life.
"the obvious difference is that the speaker used john 3:16 as a guilt trip for those to do more.... exercise faith when the real meaning of the scripture seems much different.

Remeber in WTS speak that exercising faith means attending all the meetings and counting you time going door to door. Believing is never enough.
