The term has been around loooooong before the JWs. It simply means one who has disaffiliated themselves from their former religion. The only perjorative connotations are the ones that the JWs and other cults assign to it; the definition itself is merely a technical one and not necessarily a slur. Anybody who has left the Methodists or Baptists is an apostate just as much as an ex-JW is an apostate. It's just that those former religions may not consider it a sin, and the term is largely unused except by religions/cults who consider it a sin. So ex-Methodists or Baptists may not call themselves apostates because they may never even have heard the word before.

Can a Baptist be an Apostate?
by cameo-d ini never even heard of an "apostate" until a jw called me that.....and i'm not even a jw!.
anyway, i am wondering if "apostate" is a term exclusive to cult groups only, like jws, mormons, and scientologists.
i have never heard of a methodist or baptist apostate, but surely, there must be such a thing.. i have seen complaints where "apostate" xtians say they were kicked off websites that promote "mainstream xianity" or denominational religions, so there can never really be any deep discussions or debates on those sites.

Yeah, a little bit. Hey, my name and thoughts about the JWs are public record already, so:
My name's Brianna Karp. If there's anybody here from the Fullerton or Los Alamitos/Cypress congregations in California who knows me or used to know me or my family (or who might know my little sister, still a hardcore JW in Flagstaff, AZ), feel free to PM me ;)

Ugh, I saw that today, and thought, "just wait, the JWs are gonna co-opt that one. They'll be reciting the article verbatim from the platform, but they'll just change "Christian" to "JW" and "Jesus" to "Jehovah".
I never got those people, btw. When somebody is pointing a gun at you and wants to rob you, you do whatever the fuck they want so as not to get shot. I don't think this woman was particularly noble; I think she was an idiot for potentially putting herself at more risk. That man was far more liable to shoot her in the head than go, "oh hey, you know what, I'm a Christian too!" God didn't protect her; she got damn lucky.
Also, probably not the brightest idea to tell a criminal that the money they steal will come out of your paycheck. A) They almost certainly will not care - this guy was an exception; B) They almost certainly will know it's not true. It's illegal for your employer to dock your pay because your cash register was robbed at gunpoint. Come on. For feck's sake.

Improv Everywhere pulls public stunts with volunteers. I like their stuff more when it's subtle or mind-trippy, though, and it takes people a while to figure out exactly what's going on:

The storm trooper thing (and last month's "Ghostbusters" prank in the NYC library) seemed kind of cheesy and obvious in comparison. I wonder if they're running out of ideas lately...

Um, if your child is committing arson, torturing animals, and attempting to murder his grandfather, then he's got deep mental issues far beyond anything a spanking will help. That kid needs serious therapy and likely medication. It pisses me off that that mother is just sitting around wringing her hands, going, "what shall I doooooo? The naughty step doesn't work!!!" Bitch, get him psychological help! If ADHD drugs aren't working - here's a thought - maybe it's not ADHD, but something else. Gah.
As for what I think of spanking, I generally believe that it's wrong and there aren't any circumstances that warrant it that couldn't effectively be addressed by other, more positive means. I was still being stripped naked and spanked (more whipped, actually) up to age 18 when I moved out, and beaten if I resisted. It was humiliating and if anything, just reinforced my private desire to escape. Fear and pain only made me secretly resentful. If I ever have children, I hope that I'm able to teach them to understand why a behavior is undesirable rather than teach them to fear me. I think that "this is why it's wrong, and here are the inevitable negative consequences, but here is also the flip side, the positive outcome if you choose more constructive actions in the future" is a better approach than teaching a child to fear me because I'll hit them if they do something I don't like.

Ha, one of my best friends and his fiancee are at Comic-Con this week. He was all excited about going and tormenting the Westboro freaks. Now I keep scouring all the photos looking for them.

If The Watchtower Ruled the World...
by brotherdan induring my "intervention" the other night, an interesting thing was brought up that i remember hearing all through my life.
i think even the wt has commented on it a time or two.. the girl i was talking to said, "can you just imagine what this world would be like if it was run by jehovah's witnesses?!?
" she was saying this so as to prove her point that jehovah's witnesses have love and would never go to war nor break the law.

Favorite MOVIE SCENE - any genre - your pick!
by AWAKE&WATCHING in.
i realized i was hi-jacking another thread so i thought i would start my own topic.. one of my favorite movie scenes is the "to tip or not to tip" scene in reservoir dogs.
i don't care for all the blood in tarantino movies but he is, without a doubt, a genius.. .
