  san francisco 49'ers vs the red hot seattle seahawks.... i am torn as a 49'er fan and a current 'hawks fan.. vegas is giving sf a 53-47% edge.

  my vote is for the lord of the rings, all three of them.

  or pretty much any star trek movie.

  i tried watching the lor movies today, but my god, it's just battle after battle after battle and frodo, cute guy though he is, wimping out all over the place and having to be carried by everyone.. dull... i have never succeeded in watching those damn movies from beginning to end..

  Nah, just before the election I tried to watch a debate between two CPA's running for Washington State Auditor. I'm an accountant and I couldn't get through it.

  i keep crossing paths with people who are in recovery, that is, recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.

  these folks regularly attend alcoholics anonymous and narcotics anonymous meetings and are all somewhere in the process of working the 12 steps of recovery.

  the organization denies affiliation with any legal entity; a blatant deception, a lie they tell new ones and each other at each and every meeting.

  That would be because you do. There is a genetic component to the disease that won't just go away. An alcoholic can no more stop being an alcoholic that a diabetic can just stop being a diabetic. Being in recovery is sort of like having your cancer go into remission.

  "Habitual psychological or physiological dependence on a substance or practice beyond one's voluntary control."

  If you can quit without help your not an addict. Any doctor reasonably familiar with addiction (there are two in my family) will tell you its hard to quit even with help. AA has worked for lots of us. Other programs work for other people. Good for them.

  You say you want to understand, you sure don't talk like you want to understand. You talk like something's under your skin and you want to rant about it. You're welcome to your opinion, but you're not making any friends, or helping the ones you have who happen to have a problem.

  How Science has advanced since the Victorian Era...

  buttonhooks, steam-run horseless carriages, corsets, steamships, gaslight streetlights, wax candles..... these things were considered the 'latest' in "modern conveniences" during the victorian era.. the victorian era also ushered in some exciting new scientific discoveries and inventions - uranium, x-rays, electric telegraphs, bicycles, and a good part of the industrial revolution.. of course, nowadays we wouldn't dream of using buttonhooks to 'button up' our shoes, nor would we even consider having a steam-powered "horseless carriage" in our garage.. we wouldn't allow a dentist to work on us using 19th-century tools or techniques, nor would we trust a psychologist who insisted on using "phrenology" to determine why we have mood swings or depressions....

  The whole system of classifying animals is undergoing a huge change with the advent of DNA analysis. The old method was to classify animals according to shared characteristics. Now we are discovering that animals that seem to be related by anatomy are not connected at all, and animals that don't look alike at all, are genetically related. And ecologists are classifying species by ecological niche...

  My Dad once told me that he can remember when his father (an old time country doc) was astounded when his patients stopped dieing of pneumonia with the discovery of sulpha drugs in the 1930's.

  There is a modern use for phrenology: you examine a person's character and then beat lumps into his head to match.

  Dec.21st and the countdown to the Mayan Apocalypse

  december 21 marks the winter solstice and the end of a cycle called the 13th b'ak'tun.. 1.will we see a few who want to join the celestial parade ala those who wanted to hop on a comet a few years ago.. 2.should koolaid and vodka be banned dec. 20th.. 3.will the wt.

  come out with an article making fun of those who 'falsely predict the end of the world' .

  i'll take bets on #3.
