A lot of medical procedures involve risk analysis, immunizations are a good example. (I think flouride is a good example but that's the subject of another thread). I don't know the exact numbers but lets say that there is a tetanus shots create a complication in one in a million cases, and 1/10of those are serious. If you immunize a billion people you're going to see a thousand problems, a hundred of which are serious. So yes you can point to a bunch of people that got sick from the shot. But if one out of ten thousand people are going to get tetanus without the shot then 100,000 are going to get sick. Simple math which too many don't think about.

Phizzy, what you call "proper football" has become a big deal here in Seattle. My oldest son may make a fan of me, I just don't understand it very well.

Do You Regard President Obama In The Same Way As You Did BEFORE The Election?
by minimus inlately, even late night comedians are starting to make fun of the president.. i hear more negatives about the president than ever before---even from his own voters.. (i had high hopes for him when he beat mccain but since then, i believe the president has been a huge disappointment)..

I did not expect much, and he's delivered it.
To be fair, Americans have unrealistic ideas of what the government can do generally, and the Presidency in particular. But he did not have a lot of record to stand on, and he does not seem comfortable with the political horsetrading (or horse beating) it takes to get stuff done in Washington.

Beks,
Mrs Jeff's sense of humor is impaired at the moment due to some unpleasentness with her employer, otherwise I'd ask. I suspect her answer would be something along the line of "probably true since that's what men look at first."
Confused,
these days I find porn boring. I'm counting down time until football starts (Seahawks preseason opener is Thursday night).

Flouridation costs about $.50-3.00 per person/yr. Larger population centers cost less. If we take 1.75 as average (probably too high) the total cost in the US is about 550 million/yr - about 1/3 of what we spend PER DAY on gasoline, or 1/180th of our annual beer expenditures. Not exactly a big money maker for a chemical company.

Scary Stuff
by Farkel intoday's high school students in the usa:.
less than 1/2 of them cannot identify the century when our civil war happened.. one in four thought columbus discovered america sometime after 1750.. one in three cannot name one right enumerated in the bill of rights.. three out of four cannot name the first us president.. two out of three do not know the length of term of a member of the house of representatives.. half cannot find britain on a map.. one out of four cannot find america on a map.. when my oldest daughter, who is now a physician was in 9th grade in this once-great state of california, i asked her about the three branches of our federal government.
she was clueless and told me she would take civics in her junior year in high school.

My granddaughter attends a home school support school that has a lot in common with what they're doing in Finland. The students are split into age groups of about three years, rather than one year grades. If needed they move back and forth between age groups so that they recieve instruction appropriate to their level of need. The school does not give grades (in the sense of ratings) at all. Students work on something until they have it mastered. They learn priciples and techniques, not factoids.
In the three years we've been there every one of their graduates has been accepted at their college of choice (plus almost everywhere else they appplied). They've averaged about 100k in merit scholarships.
Best quote from a former student "The Attic taught me to love learning and to be responsible for my own learning."

Nice thoughts but it isn't going to happen. The courts are going to take a first amendment view that if people don't want to shun people and their church requires it; the solution to the problem is to go to a different church.

What constitutes 'proof' on JWN?
by besty inrecently there have been a few threads where claims have been made alledging personal negative effects in 'real life' following internet activity on jwn and other ex-jw related sites.
discussion then ensues, aspects of which may include 3rd parties either disputing the truth or affirming the likelihood of the claim.
questions are asked.

Marvin. Never have I known anyone be able to use so many words while saying so little.
I thought you had children. My nine year old granddaughter can outtalk most politicians.
