The GB routinely take scriptures talking about God and apply them to themselves.

A "Three-fold cord"?
by stuckinarut2 inwe all know of the well used scripture that speaks of "a three-fold cord" in marriage.. sure, it is meant to indicate that any marriage that has "god" in it as the foundation of the couple's life will be successful.
but how often have we noticed that what it really means for witnesses is that the society, or the gb has the right to be an unwelcome and nosey intruder in the lives of couples.
every decision that family unit makes is influenced by the organisation.

Why the NFL Protest Is a Massive and Insulting Failure
by freemindfade ini think everyone has the freedom to protest, they also have freedom of speech, these are two fundamental things that make america amazing.
but thinking rationally about what is going on with the nfl, therefore, i have an unfavorable opinion of the league, and the players, not their right to free speech, but their motive and execution of it.
constitutional freedom to protest ends at the workplace door too.

A couple of thoughts.
Freedom goes both ways. The players are free to protest. The fans are free to go find something else to do with their time and money. We'll see how that works out for everybody.
If the players want to protest violence against those that can't fight back they should start by doing something about their own people beating their wives and girlfriends.

I graduated from college in the summer of 1973, and was baptized a few months later, having started a study that spring. The "end is soon" rhetoric mostly fit into an already held world view. We were at the tag end of Vietnam, Watergate was becoming The Big Story, the mid-east was coming apart, the US and USSR had enough bombs to blow up the world, people were sick and starving. It was logical (or so it seemed at the time) that God was going to put everything right. I passed up a chance to go to grad school, and temporary pioneered. I also met a nice JW girl (also a convert) and got married in the fall of 1974.
By 1977 I knew something was wrong, but stayed in for the social contacts and my wife's family (they were the ones that converted her). After moving to a new congregation we lost interest entirely and haven't been in a Kingdom Hall since 1988. We're still married.

Thinking about the end of the Watchtower
by JeffT infirst, a word about the watchtower’s financial position: nobody (outside the watchtower organization) knows.
the wtbs is not required to disclose its finances, and doesn’t.
we can speculate, but that is all we are doing.

First, a word about the Watchtower’s financial position: nobody (outside the Watchtower organization) knows. The WTBS is not required to disclose its finances, and doesn’t. We can speculate, but that is all we are doing.
Secondly, and more importantly, I think the XJW community needs to consider what the demise of the WTBS might mean for Jehovah’s Witnesses. For generations now, they have been trained to look to the authority of the Governing Body for any decision they may need to make. As we all know, they aren’t allowed to think for themselves on the most basic matters. Where will these people turn when they’re way of life is kicked out from under them?
I think that should something major happen to the Society we will see a wave of depression, anxiety and suicide the likes of which we’ve never seen. I expect that most Witnesses will eventually (or sooner) find somebody to tell them what to do. It would not be difficult for somebody (perhaps even the current governing body) to set up a new religion that looks very much like the old one. We’ll still be fighting the same enemy, he’ll just go by a different name.

The Gentile Times Reconsidered Recommendation
by Jules Saturn ini've been trying to get my hands on this book and read a review that i thought was interesting.
an anonymous person reviewed the book on barnes and noble and said .
"jonsson book deals with babylonian tablets.

I own the book. He's working from generally accepted translations, which is fine when working on ancient manuscripts. How many Watchtower writers speak/read Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic? If knowing the original language is the standard why listen to JW's?

It doesn't take much research to learn that conservatives opposed nearly every single freedom that we are lucky enough to take for granted these days
It doesn't take much to look around and see that extremist leftists oppose nearly every freedom we take for granted. The current state of college campuses is a prime example. The specifics of the rules would be different, but the left would still have us live in a kingdom hall where unapproved thought is not allowed. And you get to try to defend yourself from the mob when an accusation is let loose; without benefit of a trial, witnesses, or legal protection. The absolutes are in play, if you're not with them, you are opposed. Looks just like being accused of apostate leanings to me.
Additional note: while we're erasing the past, Robert Byrd (D) was a member of the KKK. Let's take his name off of everything its on. That would be approximately every public structure in West Virginia.
Second note: Jefferson Davis was a Democrat.

White supremacy is an ideology of peace
by OneEyedJoe ini'm tired of hearing these constant attacks on white supremacists after the events in charlottesville.
why are moderate white supremacists being lumped in together and sharing the blame for the actions of one reprehensible man that misinterpreted the ideals of white supremacy and became violent?
clearly the motivation of such attacks on white supremacists is nothing other than racism.

By my calculations that give everybody about .3 acres (1800 people per square mile) or about 750 per square kilometer. And that is ALL land, good land, crummy land, swamp, desert, mountain glaciers etc.

Lois, this character is female. The fact that she's JW is is peripheral to the plot. She, my lead character, and another young man discover they have supernatural powers. When her parents get wind of this they think she's demonized. I just want to make sure I get the JW related details right.
The story takes place near Seattle.
