A conversation I had with an elder...
by EndofMysteries innot too long ago i had a long conversation with an elder and at some point the topic went towards exceptions to the rule and how everything is not black and white.. his example he gave me....he asked if two married sisters who have unbelieving spouses were invited to a christmas party at their spouses workplace, if it would be wrong for both of them to go.
he went on that it depends on the reasons.
he said sister a husband is well mannered and responsible, is okay with her not going, and her going there would merely be participating in everything.

'Deal with it!' - WT, in so many words
by Gayle inhttp://www.jw.org/en/publications/magazines/wp20091101/spouse-special-needs/.
an article if a marriage partner has a chronic health issue.
no - did not mention something like - 'just read the bible & you'll feel better.

SFPW - Let's be fair? Yes please, let's be fair. Let's compare apples to apples. In my scenario I am going to compare some still active 100% in JW family and their situation vs another christian church/etc.
Financial advice and help comparison - JW's teach to get the bare minimum education and until recently college was really looked down upon. If a member is in need of help, they can't call Bethel, they don't have a fund to help members who are in dire straits. They are told to ask other family, it's not what they do. Other churches, I'm giving comparisons on one I personally know. All encouraged to get good schooling to have good work. They have funds to help those who are in bad circumstances, if someone needs help paying the electric bill, or recently a family lost their own due to a disaster and they did a fundraiser to help them. Like the early christians who also had a fund and helped the elderly and those who needed help.
Marriage/drug/chronic health issue/etc comfort counseling and advice - With the JW's, first of all if somebody mentions alcohol/drug problem, etc, the first thing will be a judicial committee, and if they aren't dfed, then for any of the above issues, the elders might talk with them once very blue moon about how going to more meetings and service will take care of those problems. This other christian church, they have dedicated counselors. If someone had a drug issue, there is one to help them with that and spend all the time they need and work on it. If someone is going through hard times, again help and support. If someone having marriage problems or even before marriage they do premarriage counseling to help prepare. JW's have absolutely none of that.
So the WT issues orders to be followed as from God himself, and when they end up being bad, (end hasn't come yet, should have got a better education, etc), the GB will print a statement like this, "Jehovah's Witnesses being over zealous on when the end would come didn't prepare for living a full life in this world and didn't prepare by planning for retirement or getting a proper education".
You will NEVER see a statement like, "In the past, the governing body of jehovah's witnesses wrongly advised it's members not to plan for retirement and get an education".

JWs took off from work in 1975?
by skeeter1 ina friend of mine is an electrician supervisor.
back in 1975, one of his employees was a jw.
the jw was so convinced that 1975 would bring the end of the world, that the jw took off from work (like, the first week in january) and sat on the top of a north carolina mountain waiting for armegheddon.

not only that, the kingdom ministry reported how many were selling their homes and things and using that money to finish off the year just doing service and what a fine way to spend the remaining months.

SFPW - I read that article as well, that if it wasn't due to the laws, if they could, they would execute apostates, if law and still under the old testament.
What is interesting is another thing the old testament says, Deut 18:20-22
‘However, the prophet who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded him to speak or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must die. 21 And in case you should say in your heart: “How shall we know the word that Jehovah has not spoken?” 22 when the prophet speaks in the name of Jehovah and the word does not occur or come true, that is the word that Jehovah did not speak. With presumptuousness the prophet spoke it. You must not get frightened at him."
So in addition to what the WT wants to say on who should be put to death, if we were under the old testament law and the laws allowed it, after Rutherford took over he began saying he (by saying the WT org, but he was the one doing all the writing) was being told by Jesus through angels and brother russell from beyond the veil, the lords commandments. This included the 1925 false prophecy of the dead princes be raised up, and also that the lord had commanded each person should do 60 hours of field service per month, etc.
If it was the old testament time, he would have been executed in 1926 according to Duet 18:20-22. Instead, after 1925 passed, he denied (even though it was in clear print anybody could open) that he said 1925 was a certain thing and blamed everybody for being stupid enough to believe it. He also keep insisting that Jesus was using them, that holy spirit was done away with, and the only way for salvation by w/ the organization Jesus was in communication with because holyd spirit is not longer teaching.
After he died, the successors brought back holy spirit as the teacher, but somehow that only they are the ones who get it, to again keep people from questioning anything they do.
If we were in the old testament times, the successors who even though they say they aren't inspired, they have put words in God's mouth. For example the awake magazines used to say, 'the creators promise that those alive during the events of 1914 will not pass away until the end" or something like that. They put words in God's mouth.
So if we were in the old testament times, those who they claim to be apostates who go against them would not be executed because according to the bible, they are false prophets and God would demand their death and nobody needing to listen to them.

I have another theory on the magians finding Jesus by the star.......
In the bible itself, it says the sun/moon/stars/etc were also for signs and times.
When they said they saw the star and knew he was born, could that also imply that perhaps his birth was foretold for a certain time / constellation / etc?
The bible says there is 'appointed times' for everything.
You need to really keep your eyes open by throughout the scriptures from old testament to new testament you can find clues on that.

patrick45 - along with your line of thought, another interesting thing is this, Moses and Elijah both appeared to Jesus. The WT teaches they were just angels who may have looked like them.
What is interesting though is that Moses and Elijah didn't just die, they were taken up by a fiery chariot. So perhaps they were taken directly to heaven and they really were the ones who appeared to Jesus.

24 hour field service marathon ??
by gingerbread infield service for up to twenty-four hours non-stop.... it's a bit of a fad in our area with pioneers - the twenty somethings especially.
we've heard from other family members and a jw friend that it's a thing in their part of the country as well.. it sounds like a group decides on a day and then piles into a van or suv to 'work' the territory - 12, 18 and even 24 hours.. anyone else hearing of this?.
ginger.

I think I started that fad back in 1998/1999, atleast in my area because nobody had done it before around here.
When I was a kid, my father and some brothers would get up at 3am and hit gas stations, hotels, etc, then go through till noon.
I thought one day, why not try to get 24 hours in 24 hours. Can take the rest of the month off and be well above the average, or if I did average time afterwards it would be practically pioneer.
I had a big car group, and I told everyone to bring all their old piles of magazines piling up, so we had a trunkful of stuff, 3 of us did the entire thing and throughout the night we had some come and go. We started at 6pm at mall parking lots, etc, then got kicked out of them, but the security guards took a magazine.
Then we did grocery store parking lots and some gas stations. Even talked to some homeless people sitting in the corners. They told us we should live like them for a few months, that Jesus had no home, etc.
By midnight we then went down the main roads stopping at the hotels, gas stations, etc and giving magazines to the clerks. We figured these people are sleeping and never answer the door so we'd get them during their midnight shifts.
Then at 6am we hit the laundry mats. Then met for the 8/9am morning service. Then the afternoon service.
It was HARD, by 6am was falling asleep but we kept getting a 2nd wind after some coffees, etc.
I never did it again, but the brothers I got to join me liked it so much they started to get groups a few times a year to do it. I know because about 2 or 3 years ago I ran into one of them and he told me he just did a 24 deal 'again' a few weeks back.

Not too long ago I had a long conversation with an elder and at some point the topic went towards exceptions to the rule and how everything is not black and white.
There is no harm in her not going, so as an elder he would tell her she isn't allowed to go. But sister B's spouse many times may drink too much, etc, and their marriage is strained, he is insisting she go, so 'out of love', for her the right decision is to go. She'll be there but not be saying merry christmas, etc.
His whole point though is that when things are questionable, that love trumps all. He also went on to say that if a brother had a job and suddenly they were making war devices, if he should leave his job right away? He said no, he has a responsibility to provide for his family, so he must first secure employment elsewhere. If they saw he wasn't trying to leave and was taking too long, then he'd be in trouble.
Now I wish I thought of this at the time, but if he was talking to me as someone taught by the organization, then it recently dawned on me that the same SHOULD apply to the blood issue with them. The mother of a family with small children needs a blood transfusion, even though they believe they technically can't take it, since the love and taking care of the family issue trumps all, then in that case she must take it because if she dies, her children will be uncared for, her husband couldn't do it alone.
Then take it a step even further, Jesus showed that anything out of love there is no law against and no sin. Eating blood as a meal when one can eat many other things is quite different from needing blood to save a life. They didn't have blood transfusions back in bible times. So the law of love would mean that a blood transfusion, to save a life, would trump abstaining from blood.
Just like healing on the sabbath or saving a life trumps not doing any work.
I wish I thought of that when I spoke with him, I wonder what his response would have been.
