misery, I can't tell you how many times I've cringed at the door - I actually was out one morning with a 'brother' who put his foot in the door when the homeowner was closing it. I was soooo embarrassed and pissed off.

To those who were born in
by poopsiecakes inwhile you were a witness, did you ever play the what if game?
i would occasionally sit with my friends and wed bandy the ideas around...if we werent born in would we be interested if someone knocked at our door...would we want to go to college...would we be promiscuous.... it was interesting to hear the responses and i think about that now.
one thing i always knew was that if someone knocked at my door a) chances are i wouldnt answer and b) although i would be polite, i would not have any interest whatsoever.

I used to resent the fact that I was born in the 'time of the end'. I'd justify it in my head that I was lucky - like you mentioned, jwfacts, but I still thought it sucked. Of course, now I KNOW just how much it sucked since it's not even true!!!!
So sorry you lost your friend that way, restrangled. Such a painful way to lose someone.
I hear you, doublelife - university was never something that I wanted or felt I needed and now, many years later, I suffer from the affliction of not knowing what my passion is. I have many things that I love doing and I know that I want to make a living doing something I love but all of those years of being conditioned to do what I had to do has made it really hard to figure out how to make that happen. It bugs me that those years we should be spending learning who you are were spent learning what the GB wants you to think...
leec, really good take on the history of door knocking and why it's no longer appropriate

I think it's safe to say that loonies are everywhere, in every religion, and everywhere you find loyalty without question like big corporations or even small companies like the one I work for.
I was fortunate in that I had some friends who liked to speculate every once in a while - always prefaced by 'isn't it wonderful to be in the truth' to cover our asses. Some of the most interesting conversations I've had of this nature were with elders and 'higher ups' - CO's, bethelites, and even one guy who did research for the writing committee. Looking back and remembering those chats and their take on things from the standpoint of not being a witness anymore is somewhat enlightening. Not everyone follows blindly and some definitely have their own ideas about stuff - they just don't voice it to most people and toe the line when giving talks and stuff. I guess that's cognitive dissonance at it's finest.

While you were a witness, did you ever play the ‘what if’ game? I would occasionally sit with my friends and we’d bandy the ideas around…if we weren’t born in would we be interested if someone knocked at our door…would we want to go to college…would we be promiscuous…
It was interesting to hear the responses and I think about that now. One thing I always knew was that if someone knocked at my door a) chances are I wouldn’t answer and b) although I would be polite, I would not have any interest whatsoever. I told my dad once that I didn’t understand this human spiritual need that I would hear about because I never felt it. Needless to say, he didn’t understand that at all…

hey noni noni ( how the mornons got the jw's to work for them)
by highdose ini've no idea if this health craze is still current in the borg land.. but it started with the moroms in utah setting up a health drink company.
it took the form of a mlm and they quickly farmed it out to the jw's who jumped all over it.
at one point everyone i knew was buying this very expensive drink, those mormons must have been rolling in the cash!.

It was always a source of fascination to me that JW's jump all over the latest MLM health craze - I can't tell you how many demos I've been to by Sister Thiswillcureeverything or Brother HaveIgotawaytomakecash. I could never quite figure out the logic to curing everything now when the new system is 'right around the corner' or the get rich quick things for obvious reasons...MLM's LOVE the witnesses - it's like a bottomless pit of people who are already programmed to believe stuff without too much questioning when it comes from someone in the congregation.

Oh my god i'm about to pull my hair out!
by SeekingSanity inalright.... everyone keep saying over and over again ..you can't love someone without loving yourself first.
all people ever do ...even the ones that are in codependant relationships that are violent and upsetting say 'you must love yourself first' ...i've been told that all my life...'love yourself first love yourself first'.
that's like telling someone that doesn't know japanese......'you gotta learn japanese first!

How about an easy exercise...you mentioned that you're in a great relationship with an amazing girl. Why not try to see yourself through her eyes? If she sees you as an amazing guy, there must be something amazing about you. Look at yourself in the mirror and imagine she's looking back at you. What does she see? And stop any thought of 'gee I don't know what she could possibly see in me' because obviously there is something great there or she wouldn't still be with you.
Be honest with yourself - not just about the bad stuff, that's too easy. See yourself with all of your faults and qualities as a package. Sometimes, doing the right thing for the wrong reason is not necessarily bad because it comes back to you and that's what can be difficult to accept when you're in a self-loathing frame of mind. You feel as though you don't deserve it because you weren't 'sincere' in your actions. Make the conscious effort to not think that way and replace those negative thoughts with 'yes I deserve this because...' then plug in a reason culled from the above exercise.
I also suggest spending time alone with yourself and working on your sense of humor so that things don't seem quite so serious - laugh at yourself, learn to enjoy your own company. Make jokes to yourself that only you know about. Sounds really ridiculous but it worked wonders for me...

Oh I get that, behemot - I was wondering if anyone has ever done some kind of number estimate on the number of rules JW's have to live by; including beards, skirts, bethel visit attire...that kind of stuff and of course, the stoning disfellowshipping offences. It seemed to me that I read a number somewhere that there were over 1000, but I have no idea where that was...

Massive earthquake. Haiti doesn't get a break.
by BurnTheShips inport-au-prince (reuters) - a major earthquake hit the impoverished country of haiti on tuesday, collapsing buildings in the capital port-au-prince and burying residents under rubble, a reuters reporter in the city said.. he said he saw dozens of dead and injured people in the rubble, which blocked streets in the city.. the epicenter of the quake was located inland, only 10 miles from the capital port-au-prince and was very shallow at a depth of only 6.2 miles.. it prompted a tsunami watch for parts the caribbean, the pacific tsunami warning center said on tuesday.. "everything started shaking, people were screaming, houses started collapsing ... it's total chaos," reuters reporter joseph guyler delva said.
"i saw people under the rubble, and people killed," he added.. a local employee for the u.s. charity food for the poor reported seeing a five-storey building collapse in port-au-prince, a spokeswoman for the group, kathy skipper, told reuters.. another food for the poor employee said there were more houses destroyed than standing in delmas road, a major thoroughfare in the city.. panic-stricken residents filled the streets desperately trying to dig people from rubble or seeking missing relatives as dark fell shortly after the quake.. "people were screaming 'jesus, jesus' and running in all directions," delva said.. a major earthquake, of magnitude 7 or higher, is capable of causing widespread and heavy damage.
there was no immediate report of damage or casualties.. the tsunami center said the watch was in effect for haiti, the neighboring dominican republic, with which it shares the island of hispaniola, cuba and the bahamas.. "a destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data," the center said.

This is just heartbreaking - a country with terrible infrastructure and no building codes...the devastation must be horrific. Thanks for the link, BTS.
