Does The State Have The Right To Quarantine Someone Because They Might Have Ebola?

no doubt you have heard about the nurse that thumbed her nose to the state and went out of the house in spite of being ordered to stay at home.

what is your opinion on this?.

Please ignore all of the fear mongering that is coming from the media and politicians. This woman is asymptomatic and Ebola is NOT contagious unless symptoms have presented. Just because some people who haven't done their homework say that she needs to be quarantined for 21 days doesn't mean that this is the case or that she is selfish. Leave it to the professionals to make the decision and the professionals (actual doctors who know what they're talking about) say that she does NOT need to be quarantined. The media frenzy around her this morning when she went for a bike ride was ridiculous and it's pretty clear that they're not worried about catching anything, based on the way they were swarming her.

The incubation period, that is, the time interval from infection with the virus to onset of symptoms is 2 to 21 days. Humans are not infectious until they develop symptoms. First symptoms are the sudden onset of fever fatigue, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, symptoms of impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding (e.g. oozing from the gums, blood in the stools).

Yes, it's a scary disease for those who have it but let's be real about how many people have it, why they have it, how dangerous it actually is, and focus on what can be done to help the people in Western Africa who are most at risk.

JW attitudes to women

i would be very interested to hear from you ladies on this one.

i know that the society keeps women in subjugation through the headship cr@p but didn't ahve any sense about hoew prehistoric the attitudes are until the other day when we were driving out of the supermarket car park and my wife spotted a woman dressed in tight shorts (it has been very hot here) and she commented 'they say that women who dress like that dserve to be raped'.

i did a wtf and overreacted 'how can you blame the victim like that - such attitudes give men a lciense to commit rape and make women feel they are to balme if they get raped which in turn means that rape doesn't get reported and it gopes on with impunity.

Egyptian society in the 60s and 70s was quite liberal in the role of women in politics, education etc. When I lived there in the 80s the majority of women did not wear hijabs (veils) - this is no longer the case.

A very good point and one that I've mentioned on the big giant thread and actually another reason I see the Islam religion as the problem because this is the result when a fundamentalist religion is allowed by its adherents to rule the day. Have US politics contributed to a rise in this fundamentalist/extremist mindset? Perhaps, but that's a different topic and doesn't change the fact that if there was nothing to base these extremist points of view on, they wouldn't exist.

How the hell do they keep getting away with it and how are people so easily manipulated is what I find particularly fascinating. Especially because so many truly (otherwise) intelligent people are taken in by it and continue to gobble it up. Just fascinating.

If it's ok with you Frazz, I'll quote you back to you from your OP on this topic:

The underlying premise is that men can't be blamed for failing to control their sexual impulses if women dress or act provocatively.

That's Islam in a nutshell and what I can't understand is why it's ok because there are so many more Muslims than there are JW's. This only makes Islam that much WORSE because it's perpetuating this type of attitude towards women on a massive scale.

Frazz, (may I call you Frazz?) you and I have had very little interaction, but I suspect that we see eye to eye on a whole lot of things. What I think I need to clarify is that I'm not a black and white thinker. When it comes to my current opinions about Islam, it was a hard and difficult road going from a live and let live mindset to acknowleding the fundamental issues with the religion that leads to the extremists doing the awful things they do. I will still stand up for the rights of Muslims to practice their religion, but not without pointing out serious flaws within that religion and hating what it does to people because it creates black and white thinking - even at the most westernized level. Which is why I've repeatedly compared it to JW's and other cults that force their adherents to turn away from rational thinking on pain of some horrific state where their deity hates them.

Whether or not the Quran contains pretty passages is irrelevant because they will always be superceded by the violent ones in the minds and actions of the extremists and flipping from fundamentalist to extremist is a relatively easy road in high control groups. This is my problem with Islam.

And let's not go down the fatwa road. Unless you want to compare all of the other fatwas out there, including this one:

The subsequent 3 Billion or so years of evolution that it took to get us to our current level of biodiversity and complexity is even less spontaneous. The only one that asserts that life arose spontaneously is the creationist saying that god just did it one day.

Totally! It's a complete inability to realize that millions and billions of years is a long ass time. And what about the designer with a capital D? Always been there, or was also created by a designer with a bigger capital D?

This article goes over the top with their somes - 'some scientists', 'some people', 'what some say'...

The entire set of articles in this magazine is weasely. The opening question is ridiculous because the study of evolution is a different field from the study of origin of life and it just gets more and more manipulative.

Another Gerard quote:

So he saw no proof that life arose spontaneously...how interesting. I suppose he expected to be out in the forest with his magnifying glass and witness a mushrooom turn into a spider and when that never happened, well obviously there's a designer with a capital D out there. Good lord.
