When I was a girl there were no MacDonalds, Burger King, KFC or Pizza Hut.
Orange juice was considered an appertizer in restaurants.
Gobstoppers really stopped you gob and once inside your mouth you couldn't get it out again without breaking your teeth. You could buy candy cigarettes and coconut tobacco.
Takeaway was fish and chips.
It was fun not as vibrant as today or as cosmopolitan but there was more community.

Now That You Can Get Involved In Politics Is It All That Important To You?
by minimus injws cannot get involved with politics.
exjws certainly can and based upon responses from this site, many are quite opinionated about political matters.. are you very involved in politics at this point in your life?
do you really believe that your opinion, your vote means all that in the big scheme of things?

They say that in a democracy you get the government you deserve.
It has become important to me it is a responsibility if you live in a democracy to pay attention and participate in the process.

It is a deliberate strategy to make JWs stand out. The Jews had fringed garments that made them stand out from the world around them and the GB tries to do something similar with JWs.
I cannot tell you how sad it made me to keep rejecting party invites that my son and daughter received. My son's question was always "Why can't I go?" I would have to say that the reason was that birthdays made Jehovah sad and we want to make God happy. He couldn't see why God had to be made happy at his expense. It isn't just the party it is the shared association and the post party buzz at school. It distances children from their peers and encourages school friends to shun them. The same is true of any celebration that JWs are excluded from.
Yes my children did get gifts all year round but if a worldly person doesn't understand the reason for the gift giving they can't share in the experience. So again the children are isolated.
JWs occupy a very narrow social world in which everything has to be modest, the size of any party cannot be ostentatious, even if you have the money to spend you cannot be seen to be over generous. People mustn't be glorified in any way so big anniversary and wedding celebrations are discouraged as showy displays. Big congregation dos have been clamped down on as setting the wrong example and putting too much focus on leisure pursuits. There is actually very little a JW can do to enjoy themselves that the GB hasn't condemned or restricted. Even at a permitted gathering JWs also have to watch their own behaviour to ensure they do nothing that may stumble others.
It is good that your child has the opportunity to enjoy her childhood. It is also good that you have someone to celebrate with. It may be that your wife will learn more from the positive experiences you share with your daughter than any talks about doctrine. There will always be a contrast between your joy and JW isolation. The congregation can be a cold hard place when all you are left with is the work and your own imperfection.

What's "Special" About You?
by minimus ineveryone easily can talk about other people---the good and bad....but sometimes we don't focus on ourselves, especially the positives.. we all have strengths.
what positives do you have, perhaps things you can be proud about?.

Apparently I have one of the rarest personality types. I also have both strong analytical skills and creative skills which is also incredibly unusual. I asked my husband what makes me special he said I was special because I was married to him . So apparently I am special by association with his gorgeousness. Pompous ass. I will beat him with the family life book until he appreciates the wonder that is me.
After reading his post I can see his interpretation of special was slightly different from mine. His was more in line with the societies use of special which can be used interchangeably with stupid.

Can You Get DFd for Working for the Department of Defense?
by daniel-p inso, as some of you may be aware, i got a job offer with an agency under the u.s. department of defense.
the other day i told a member of my family, and they nearly went apeshit.. my question: what reprecussions could this reasonably have?
does the wts speak of this in any of their publications?
-
nugget
Sorry but as you can see defence, politics and religious groups are a big NO. One brother asked if it was ok to deliver cola to the military base that was part of his delivery route and the society said no. He was told to change his route or change his job.

It is tragic that organisations care more about reputation the n there membership. Just like JWs they try to weasel out og their moral obligations in this matter.
What would be refreshing is that all groups have a zero tolerance policy, all offenders being named and shamed and receiving the full penalty of the law.

Group vacations that go wrong...
by MMXIV inever go on vacation/holiday with a group of jw's that went wrong?.

within a few days we went to a bar for the evening where one of the brothers was rudely threatened in front of his wife.

I went on holiday with some sisters just before I got married. One of them was having serious issues with her boyfriend which all the others were aware of so they kept going off together to offer consolation and advice leaving me high and dry. When they didn't go off together the boyfriend still dominated the conversation but they used crytic comments and lots of you know whos. How to be alone in the crowd.

How many people who heard Millions now living talk are still alive?
by nugget ini was wondering it's been approximately 90 years since this talk was given so how many people who heard it could relaistically be alive now?.
the country with the greatest life expectation is japan and there the average life expectation is 82. the country with the worst record is mozambique with an average life expectancy of 43.. in developing countries 16% of the population is over 65 whereas only 6% of people in developing countries meet this criteria.
only 7% of the worlds population is over 65.. so if the worlds population is 6.6 billion does it mean 463 million are over 65. however if the best average life expectancy is 82 then the proportion of the 463 million that are 90 and over must be incredbly small.

Wobble it would appear to be the case. Or even millions now living never got a life.
