I have to agree with Prisca here. Not hiring someone based solely on their religion is just another form of prejudice. Maybe in other countries that behavior is tolerated but in America you will find your self facing legal action in short order.
One of the things I always hated about the Org. was the us vs. them mentality.

Is the bible inspired?
To some extent I think yes. I think of the Hebrew scriptures as being a great deal of myth mixed in with some history and some nationalistic propaganda. Another thing to remember is that we have lost the context that many of the bible books were written in and what we are really getting is different translators interpretations of what they believe the bible is saying.
Even with all the drawbacks the basic message of the bible comes through:
(1) God started the creation process
(2) Man became estranged from God
(3) We need Jesus in order to be reconciled
(4) And through Jesus we see how we a supposed to act towards others
Reading this back to myself I realize this makes me sound much more 'religious' than I really am, however I do think the bible was inspired in a sense that it was written to convey a simply straight foward message, and it does accomplish that. I also realize that there may be many parts of the bible that are not 'inspired' but were simple additions by men.

me personally i think all religions started off with one mans interpatation of the bible and i'm not going there again.

Yes, some of them. I have little respect for the bible thumpers, or the fundies. The more liberal churches though I have a great deal of respect for; they do a lot of good and help with social problems.
I don't feel you need to belong to any organization to get close to your creator or to lead a spiritual life if thats what you are looking for. Basically I think organized religions are just another group civic institutions and not a path to God.

I have no desire to join any organization just to 'study the bible'. However, sometimes I think about joining a very liberal and civic minded church. The reason for this is really quite simple; liberal churches focus on doing the things Jesus did, feeding the poor, housing the homeless, helping the sick, which are things that I would enjoy doing.
Basically if I joined another church it would be for social and societal reasons and have nothing to do with drawing closer to God.

If she can't do the job she was hired for, I have to side with the boss based on the knowledge I have of the case.
If it goes to court that will be the key to the entire case. If it is determined that singing birthday songs is not one of her primary duties or she could have been easily replaced by another worker; Chi-Chi's will lose.

Honestly I am unfamiliar with Chi-Chi's. If Chi-Chi's is a birthday orientated resturant like Chucky cheese, where the resturant is set up to catter to parties and that is their market niche, I would then agree with Alan F.
But if Chi-Chi's is a standard resturant then Chi-Chi's should have simply had another waiteress sing the birthday song and bring the cake.
I believe that the employer is responsible to make a reasonable attempt to accomadate their employees religious convictions as long as it does not damage customer goodwill.

as jw's, we often hear the scripture about being no part of the world, you know the on where jesus says" i am no part of the world, just as you are no part of the world".

i am curious as to what you're thoughts are on this idea, as a jw, you are always taught that you are automatically part of "the world" if you are not a jw.
The first big contradiction I noticed was the teaching that organized relgion was a snare and a racket, while we Jw's belonged to one of the most organized relgions of all.

One the actions that I will always regret is that when I started coming into the org. I tossed my personal library. Only about 150 books but they ranged from fiction to science, from evoulution to the physics of space travel. Sad.
One the actions that I will always cherish is when I tossed the Watchtower bound volumes. The person I studied with gave me the bound volumes back to 49; a few years were missing but not much. The bound volumes looked much better sitting in a dumpster than in my bookcase. Many of my brothers and sisters were envious of my library; I should have burned the volumes in the parking lot of the hall.

i was wondering what it is that you hated most about the meets ?.
the one thing that used to really rile me was the pressure to control the children - the frowns and the disapproving looks when they were just behaving like normal kids .... the worst of it all for me was seeing any little person being taken outside and hearing the loud slaps even when the door was closed .... what is it that you least miss ?
Heres a list:
(1) The sound of kids getting spanked; it was so loud you could hear it at the front of the hall when they were getting whipped in the back.
(2) The false kindness. Anyone that was inactive for a bit before they left should know how this feels. The people that would not acknowledge you outside the hall, because you were 'bad association', would give you a little cold and tight lipped smile when you showed up to the meeting hall.
(3) The formal dress attire. I always thought it was pointless; it makes more sense to dress for comfort and not for show.
(4) The length and consistancy of the meetings. All the information in a 2 hour Sunday meeting could have been delivered in 30 minutes or less.
(5) The politics of the collective. Grown adults getting upset because they were not called on to answer a question.

Hello All,
I never contributed either; living that JW lifestyle left me broke.
However I just had enough one day and went from pioneering to nothing, no attendance, no service, and little contact. I still believed it was the 'truth' so I spent years trying to get active again, but on some level I knew it was BS so I lived as a fence walker for a number of years. Eventually the Internet set me free so now I have no desire to go back, although sometimes I think of going to the memorial and partaking just for the reaction.
