How can a JW say that?
by TD in--that's a question i keep coming back to.
it's probably a "human nature" question more than anything else, but perhaps someone who was a full-fledged jw (unlike myself) can explain it.
virtually the entire jw belief system, even their name, revolves around their public ministry and this ministry is based on certain ideas and premises:.

I agree with Choosing Life. Of course as a born in, you dont really have much choice at first. It is like a drug for many. What will drug users do? They will lie, cheat, and steal to keep up the illusion in their mind that there is no problem with the lifestyle they are living. I think the two ideas that keep witnesses hooked are paradise earth and Gods organization. The GB uses those in tandem to cut people off from any other options.
Example: What happens when you die? Resurection to paradise earth. If your worldly relative dies? Same outcome, they get another chance. What about the same relative who rejects JW truth and will die at (immininent) Armageddon? Witness brain shuts down, will not address or think about that outcome seriously in comparison to the other examples.
2nd example: Who is God's Organization - the GB...or faithful slave, whatever they want to call it. But God's organization phophesied false things over the years, how can they really be "Gods Organization?" They say "Well they aren't inspired...they have never claimed that, just spirit directed" even though old literature claims they are Gods prophet. They have always claimed they are Gods "channel of communication" The logical conclusion to these two facts is that God gives incorrect information to the GB to pass along to the flock. Is that really how God works? If so, any religion that throws out false dates can claim to be "Gods channel" So they lie to themselves to keep their hope of paradise going.

How are you faders doing?
by pat1060 injust wondering how all you slow faders are doing.i know this subject is discussed many times, but personally i wish it was more.we should post every once in a while just to say how we are doing,we need to encourage each other.as for me,it is still going very slow.right now i'm looking into the history that is being covered up.i have learned so much just by reading the older threads.it is very painful for me because this was the truth.and to be finding out so much crap that 99% of jw don't even know,it just is unbelievable.i have cut my field service down, and miss more meetings then i ever did.i'm hoping the sister that is in my face all the time, trying to help me,will forget about me soon......so how are you doing?.

There is nothing wrong at all with being "self-centered" Think about the phrase for a second. You are focusing on yourself. What in the world is wrong with that? When going through a difficult time, that is the most important thing to do, make sure "you" are doing all you can to fix/help yourself. Are you really any good to others if you are constantly running around following WT directives that you don't believe anymore? No, it just builds anger and resentment.
Its just another WT label applied to those who think for themselves, and act accordingly. I'd rather be self centered (and mentally healthy) any day of the week rather than trying to please people (who don't really love you anyway)

"True Christians Give Out of Love"
by dig692 inin the congregation bible study for the week of nov 30, the subject of christmas is studied (along with easter, birthdays, and halloween), but under the subheading related to christmas being a pagan holiday, jesus not being born on dec 25, yadda yadda, the point is brought out that true christians give out of love, not out of compulsion or on any specific day (not the exact quote mind you).
true christians give out of love...so all the "bad" christians who give presents to family and friends and loved ones on christmas don't do so because they love those to whom they give gifts, but rather because they have to...because its dec 25...?.
is this the kind of tactic the wts has employed to maintain control of their followers?

Pretty much. Only they understand the bible. Only they "love". Why would it be any different with giving presents.
Oh, I was given about 3 surprise presents total in the 18 years living under my parents roof. Can't u feel the love...

While your one, no. Do this, do that. Go here, go there. Read this, read that. End result-paradise!
Once you examine JW doctrine without the blinders on....hell yeah its extremely confusing. All the doing, going, and reading doesn't make a lick of sense.

former JW now Rhodes scholar - daddy let her think for herself
by Dogpatch inuniversity of louisville graduate named rhodes scholarhttp://www.courier-journal.com/article/20091121/news01/911210361/university+of+louisville+graduate+named+school+s+first+rhodes+scholar.
monica marks grew up among fundamentalist jehovahs witnesses in eastern kentucky craving books and learning in a community where education wasnt valued.. today the university of louisville graduate is the state's latest rhodes scholar, the winner of one of the most coveted awards in academia.. growing up, the discussion wasnt about what college you would go to, it was whether or not you were even going to college, she said.
the idea of going to university and getting a degree, much less getting a rhodes, didnt even fall within our purview.. at 23 years of age, her studies in islamic law have already taken her around the globe to places like jordan, tanzania and tunisia.

I'm sure the JW response would be similar to this:
Mama Boucher: You gonna lose all your fancy fools' balls games! And your gonna fail your big exam! Because school is?
Bobby Boucher: The devil?

"holding out hope" or"coming back to Jah"
by Iwonder17 inomfg i can't stand it anymore.. i am so sick of hearing and reading things from my family that says that they are "holding out hope" that i will come back.
or they say that they are praying to jehovah that i will come back.. what other religion is so crazy that they say these things?!?!?!?!
if a buddhist person decides not to go to their church anymore, do their parents/family bombard them with this crap?

Hope is their drug of choice. It is rooted in their realization that if they really think about it, you are bird food according to their teachings. They will live in bliss forever, and you wont be there. The weird thing is this is all on a subconcious level. If they actually stopped and thought about it for a hour or so with their conscious mind, it might break the trance they are in. They might actually start to evaluate what they have come to believe, and consider the possibility it might be wrong.
So they force those thoughts to the back of their mind, and take another hit on the "hope bong" Its the only way they make it through this life...

14 is not an age where someone can make a life or death decision. Especially if all 14 of those years have been spent in a closed environment where virtually everyone in this young persons life has parroted the WTS worldview.
How can a person like this think for himself? He can't. He's been subject to dangerous mind control techniques without any alternative viewpoints. He thinks he is being watched and judged by God. How sad...and criminal.
