  In most if not all occurrences of the word in the NT it refers to imaginary god's imaginary nemesis.

  There is a new letter to elders about Child Abuse

  Anyone considered for the position of Elder, MS, .. should have a background check.

  I wholeheartedly agree with this. Every elder and MS must be obliged to have an enhanced DBS check (not sure about pioneers?) The Watchtower should be required to partner up with a professional body who have the knowledge and experience to make judgements on every DBS result.

  However there are significant issues regarding confidentiality to be negotiated.

  Here is how the system works in football in the UK...

  1 - New volunteers who have access to children go online to the DBS website and select which ID documents they wish to use to confirm their identity.

  2 - An authorised person at the club physically sees those documents and confirms online that they are satisfied the person is who they claim to be.

  3 - The volunteer fills in a request for an enhanced DBS check and the club pays the fee.

  4 - The Disclosure and Barring Service completes a check into all criminal records and other intelligence held regarding that person.

  5 - The detailed results of the check are sent only to the volunteer. This is vital for data protection.

  6 - The child welfare unit at Wembley, staffed by professionals, are simply informed by the DBS that the check was either all-clear or that there are issues.

  7 - If the check is all-clear the club are informed by Wembley that the new volunteer is ok to work with children pending completion of a child welfare course. If there are issues then Wembley writes to the individual giving them a deadline to send the report they received from the DBS to the child welfare unit at Wembley otherwise they will be suspended from that date and the club will be informed that the person should not be allowed to work with children. No reason will be given.

  8 - If the volunteer submits their report to Wembley a member of the professional child welfare unit will make a decision on whether the record affects their suitability to world with children and the club will be informed. A drunk and disorderly years ago will not usually be a problem.

  This system weeds out many unsuitable people every year but it is only a start. A clean DBS certificate only proves somebody has not been caught yet. The most important factor is that the club has suitable practices and procedures, effective mentoring and accountability.

  This latest letter does not even begin to make the organisation's child welfare procedures fit for purpose.

  I wonder how many elders and MSs they would lose immediately if they did the right thing.

  this is my current bottom-line conclusion after starting to see through the jw game 3 to 4 years ago and going through my own process of waking up.

  it helps to write it down and put it "out there".

  i hope it helps or resonates with you in your own personal process.. basically if i were given 10 seconds to say something to an active jehovah's witness that i cared about it would be the headline above.

  It would be fascinating to have a face to face with the god of the bible. Perhaps he will tell us why he is such a stupid bastard.

  I have been working with children and young people in sport for over 20 years. I have attended child protection training on a number of occasions and have held the role of child welfare officer at a club with over 100 junior members.

  There is no mandatory reporting law in the UK. However there one take-home message at every training seminar I have attended that is totally missing from this letter....

  If you get a report of child abuse or have reasonable grounds for suspicion, make sure the child is safe and call the police or social services. Even if the child says they don't want to make trouble for the abuser - call the police without delay.

  The reputation of the club or of the sport's governing body is not even part of the equation.

  The Watchtower are continuing to keep the police at arm's length unless local law obliges them to report. This will not do and it will not satisfy the Charity Commission investigation.

  Strange behaviour after cut and paste

  hi simon,.

  i've just created a topic re a cart witnessing experience.

  i wrote the original text in another bit of software (evernote) and cut and paste it in when creating the topic.. it did not leave any line space between paragraphs (just <br> tags it would appear) but when i added in some paragraph breaks it all looks ok when the edit is saved but then on refresh text is being completely lost.. i don't have this problem other times so am wondering if it's something to do with the c'n'p into the rich text editor and then subsequent edits.. any ideas?.

  Yes I find formatting breaks down with copy-paste.

  Either right click and "paste as plain text" and then add paragraph breaks or use code view to sort it out.

  Or you could delete <br> tags and then add new paragraphs as normal.

  I realise you are playing devil's advocate but here is the answer.

  Radiocarbon dating is very reliable. However it is only used to date samples up to about 10 000 years old. Using it to date a fossil would be like using an egg timer to measure the speed of a glacier.

  Fossils are dated using a variety of radiometric techniques. In many cases more than one type of isotope can be identified in the same sample and their results compared.

  There are many fossils of hominids from millions of years ago - who were clearly not humans - who could. Nothing like that exists today.

  Check out this link about a Australopithecus afarensis specimen called Lucy as a classic example...
