Surely reading books on evolution written by evolutionary biologists would make more sense?

Shelby, I have spent countless hours over the last couple of years trying to help ex-jws appreciate the wonders of evolution. It is the most wonderful and awe inspiring thing you could possibly study. If you like I will post links to some of the relevant threads on JWS there are many many helpful threads around here that would correct many of the dreadful misconceptions in your post above.
To have a discussion about these things there needs to be some common ground and a desire for both sides to deal honestly with evidence. I remember a biologist explaining why he doesn't like to debate with creationists, he said it was like somebody coming to your house and spending 10 minutes making as much mess as possible and then challenging you to tidy it up in exactly the same time.
Your understanding of the most basic facts of biology is so woeful it is almost a characterture of creationism. Where would we begin?
In the thread about "If there was no Adam who did Jesus die for" you rightly criticised others for failing to properly understand the bible before they object to its contents. Perhaps you should apply the same standard of intellectual honesty to yourself. When it comes to science you can have your own opinions but you cant have your own facts.
There are many excellent books that will help you grasp the basics, (and no, books writen by creationists about the evils of evolution don't count) how about you make a New Year resolution to study some proper science? Here are a few suggestions..
Your Inner Fish - Neil Shubin
The Greatest Show on Earth - Dawkins (review of book on JWS)
Why Darwin Matters - Michael Shermer
Evolution; What the Fossils Say and Why It Matters - Donald Prothero
Why Evolution is True - Jerry Coyne
no brag, just fact---i was the most requested speaker in my hall(s), i was often requested to give talks in kh's all over the place, not just in my area.. i personally enjoyed speakers who taught you something, not merely recited something.
we had a district overseer, paul illingsworth, i loved his style.
he delved into bible words of the original greek and hebrew.
John Flack - UK co & do

AGuest I have never read so many agonising misrepresentations of biology in one post. Its truly staggering how anybody can write so much baout a subject they know so little about. As Wolfgang Pauli said your "not even wrong".
this is an interesting blog post by the author cj werleman - write of the books god hates you, hate him back and jesus lied - he was only human.
he writes with a good dose of humor which usually helps get his point across.. the blog post dissects the latest gallup poll results regarding 40% of americans believe in biblical creationism.
but the point i found interesting in it was that if you don't believe the genesis account is literal....then jesus atoned for the sin of a fictitious character, adam.. here is a quote from the blog...but please give the whole thing a read, makes more sense that way:.
The OP is based on an understanding of the soteriology that is unique to the borg. It was Russell who taught the Jesus - Adam equivalence. He believed that Adam was redeemed by Jesus' death and would be resurrected. All of mankind was only condemned as a result of being unborn in Adam's "loins".
He also taught the traditional christian understanding which focuses on vicarious punishment. Barbour denied this part of the doctrine likening it to him killing a fly to atone for the wrongs of his son. This led to the breach between Russell and Barbour and the birth of the "Watchtower" mag.
Ironically the emphasis on vicarious punishment - see Isa 53 as AGuest said above - soon faded in the literature and although it is still officially JW doctrine no JW today would claim that Jesus died for their sin.
Rutherford made changes to the Adam- Jesus ransom doctrine and condemned Adam as not worthy of a resurrection and the idea was born that Jesus died to redeem the value of a perfect life. In my opinion it was at this point that the borg ceased to be another christian sect and became a non-christian cult.
When I made a study of the history of ransom doctrine and realised Jesus did not die for Adam's sins but for mine I left the borg and gave my life to Jesus. (actually I loaned it to him, 9 years later I took it back)
Here is a link to an article I wrote at the time that looks at the history of the doctrine and compares it to the christian gospel.
(why I now reject everything I wrote is another subject)
can't doubt the dedication of most witnesses.. .
attending 5 meetings a week; doing 10 hours of fieldservice (door-to-door) each month; working hard for the reward of eternal life on paradise earth; willingness to shun their best friends and family members if these individuals are disfellowshipped from the organization; denying their young children blood transfusions even if it might save their lives; deciding not do any independant thinking apart from their religion; willingness to change their beliefs every time their anointed leaders change their minds on doctrinal matters....the list goes on and on.. .
yes, it's amazing what people without the indwelling holy spirit will dedicate themselves to do.. .
I can't fault the dedication of the fly that is in my room right now - never lets up banging its little head off the window
quebec - the quebec government will crack down on expressions of religion in subsidized daycare centres beginning next june.. .
the canadian press has obtained documents from the family department that indicate the province will ban most forms of religion in centres that receive government money.. .
those who disregard the new directive will be subject to various sanctions, including the possible loss of their government subsidy.. .
Well done Quebec, another victory for common sense.
leaks, leaks and yet more leaks.
lawyers cry foul over leak of julian assange sex-case papers.
.. incriminating police files were published in the british newspaper that has used him as its source for hundreds of leaked us embassy cables.. in a move that surprised many of mr assange's closest supporters on saturday, the guardian newspaper published previously unseen police documents that accused mr assange in graphic detail of sexually assaulting two swedish women.
Oh the irony!
i'm not at all overweight but would like to lose 8 pounds...it seems impossible!!!.
i think my problem is that i don't exercise enough.
however, i do walk or cycle to work every day.
Sorry I strongly with WTWizard, liver and colon "cleansing" are complete nonsense.
There is a lot of good advice in the thread already. It is as simple as "eat less - move more".
Reduce your calorie intake sensibly as somebody said above if you go too far your body will reduce its metabolic rate to prepare for starvation. If you can lose 1-2LBs per week you are doing really well. If that doesn't sound like much go and take a look at a pound of lard and imagine that being burned off every week. Some people boast large weight loss but this is almost always loss of water and glycogen rather than fat.
Weigh training is very effective for the long term, muscles are fat burning machines - more muscle = higher metabolic rate, in other words your body will burn lots more calories even when you are doing nothing. Don't worry about getting too much muscle definition as a woman it just it won't happen unless you go to extremes.
Cardio exercise needs to be either 60-70% of your max heart rate (approx 220 bpm minus your age) for 30-40 mins as you will be burning glycogen rather than fat for the first 10-15 minutes. It will take approx 11 sessions to burn 1Lb - ouch! Alternatively short sessions of very high intensity training like spinning has been shown to be effective and fat burning goes on for some time after your session. Just make sure you are otherwise fit to do this kind of exercise.
Good luck and stay away from fads and "diets" its about a realistic approach to food in the long term. (and leave your liver alone)
