What really should be the role of Women in the congregations?

i'm inclined to agree completely with this account of what paul really meant.. thoughts anyone?

aren't women more deserving of greater participation and respect?.

Women have it easy in the Watchtower organisation.

Try being a young married man with a family who is expected to care for all his family responsibilities as well as everything a normal publisher does and prepare two or three meeting parts every week, conduct the Watchtower study on a Sunday, attend never-ending contentious elder's meetings, visit the elderly and sick and be at the beck-and-call of everybody who expects you to sort out their latest family drama or petty argument with another publisher.

There are no "privileges" just endless demands and pressure. If you think not being allowed to carry a microphone or run the magazine counter is male oppression you don't get it.

Edited to add - the women who are oppressed in the WT are the wives of over-worked elders. They pay the price for other people's expectations too.

That explanation on 1Cor.14 sounds contrived. If Paul was quoting an unnamed opponent why does he forget to refute them? If the bible is supposed to be a guide for Christians it could not possibly be more misleading on this point.

Maybe Paul was more enlightened than others of his time and place but by our standards he was a misogynist. Compare his words to Timothy...

"A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve." - 1Tim.2:11-13

The instruction to Timothy to keep women out of teaching and leadership is unambiguous.

Zizek seems to be saying that Jesus undermined the family to create a more egalitarian society, not that he made families more egalitarian.

Yes I got that. I wasn't trying to highlight a contradiction. Jesus did advocate the subversion of family relationships. Not just dysfunctional ones or oppressive ones or abusive ones but all family relationships to be replaced with a pseudo-family under him.

This is a tool of all tyrants.

Jesus was a dangerous narcissist. Trying to spin his words into something less offensive is a dishonest venture.

Listening to Zizek was incredibly hard work - it wasn't worth effort.

he says it's about kids talking to their classmates about evolution.

Zizek is saying that the subversion of family structure opens the way for egalitarian and non-hierarchical forms of relationship - SBF

I don't think Zizek said anything about a more egalitarian family structure - SBF

So he thinks that subverting the family structure is the road to a better world does he? Why do you think a person who thinks this way is worthy of attention?

The subversion of family structure is evil. It is a tool of every oppressive society that has ever existed including the Watchtower. If, as you assert, Zizek is saying that the subversion of the family is desirable then he is a dangerous fool.

Except Jesus said nothing about a more egalitarian family structure. He said his followers were unworthy unless they hated their parents and siblings.

This of course is deeply embarrasing so theologians like Zizek make up bullshit influenced by communist ideology.
