Thanks JWoods! I missed the whole 1975 situation, so appreciate the details of what really happened.

1975 For Deniers
by Farkel in1975 for deniers.
most of today's jws were not members in 1975 or in the 9 years prior to 1975, so they were not eyewitnesses to what really went on during that period.
i was a pioneer in that period, and i was an eyewitness to what went on.. those jws who are still active today and who were around in that period will typically say it was the "brothers" who "ran ahead of jehovah" and "read more into" the 1975 prediction than what was actually stated.

Theocratic Terms/Slang - Old and New
by pirata inat the 2010 "safeguard your spirituality", the co (or do?
) mentioned that there are some theocratic terms that we need to be reminded about.
he gave the example of many years ago when we said we were doing "back calls", but now we say we are doing "return visits".. here's some he mentioned (bad => good):.

I didn't think the Society had a Governing Body. The Society was Russell.
Technically a "governing body" IS the board of directors of a non-profit society. His statement was technically correct, but was misleading because he implied that the governing body was responsible for providing the spiritual food in the past (pre-mid-70's), when in fact it was the president's.

At the 2010 "Safeguard your Spirituality", the CO (or DO?) mentioned that there are some theocratic terms that we need to be reminded about. He gave the example of many years ago when we said we were doing "back calls", but now we say we are doing "return visits".
Here's some he mentioned (Bad => Good):
- Blood Card => Medical Directive
- The Society => The Faithful Slave, The Governing Body, The Watchtower
(It was interesting that he actually explained that, in the past, it actually was fitting to refer to "the society" because the governing body was the board of directors of the society. (He did not mention, though, that pre-mid-1970's the presidents primarily controlled the "spiritual food"))
- DF'd => Disfellowshipped
(So as not to hurt the feelings of those who have disfellowshipped relatives)
Any other theocratic term changes that others can remember?

Other interesting points Brother Franz mentioned in his 1975 convention talk:
- Now is not the time to get married, have kids, or go to university to be a civil or electrical engineer
- After repeatedly explaining the chronology and rhetorically asking if this was when armageddon and the great tribulation are going to happen: Some may insist on their opinion that all these events are going to start in 1975. But they are in danger of becoming False Prophets!
- September, 1975 marks 6000 years since Adam's creation, but the events may not start until 6000 years after eve was created, and we don't know when that was.
- "Something" momentous will happen in 1975
Made me think of dangling a carrot in front of a horse's mouth, but blaming the horse for eating it.

At the 2010 "Safeguard your Spirituality" Assembly the speaker said that by going on facebook, you are "exposing yourself for all to see." This let's Satan see our weaknesses, and use them against us; "Satan is groping you [on facebook]!"

New site exposing "jehovahsjudgment"
by middleman inmany of you are already familiar with the watchtower's 10 year association with the un.
there's also a good amount of us that are familiar with the "flagship" rebuttal site of this association---> http://www.jehovahsjudgment.co.uk/watchtower-un-ngo/.
time and time again i have been referred to this website when talking to jw's about this issue.

Cool, but can you change the background? It's impossible to read the text on the bottom portion of the screen.

If still "in", how do you feel when praying in front of a group despite being in doubt of your beliefs?
by Crisis of Conscience init happened to me this weekend.
i'm curently "active" and had some long time friends from a different congregation over for dinner.. we went through the formality of praying before the meal.
normally or rather lately i've been passing it off to someone else.

I keep them bible-based and free of doctrine that the Bible does not clearly teach.

Is the vindication of God's name taught in mainstream Christianity?
by pirata ini always found it odd that god would be so fixated on his good name that so many others would have to suffer so that he could say "see, i was right!
i told you so!"..
is the vindication of god's name/sovereignty a teaching unique to jw's, or is this also taught in mainstream christianity?.

slimboyfat, I forgot about that new light! From Wikipedia:
1995: The expression "vindication of Jehovah’s name" declared unnecessary, with emphasis on "vindicating his sovereignty" and "sanctifying his name" as being more accurate. [ 251 ] The former expression had not appeared in any publication since 1991. [ 252 ]
I guess I'll change my question to "Is the vindication of God's sovereignty" or "sanctifying his name" taught in mainstream Christianity?
