by Nickolas inhey folks.
i've been on this board for just under seven months and i thank all of you who have contributed so generously to my education on things watchtower, and quite a few other things too.
not all of it was on here but it was through this board i've been directed to sites like freeminds and jwfacts.

I believe people tend to weigh evidence objectively, but inversely proportion to the amount of emotional investment the have in it.
The more sacrifice a person has made for their decision, the less likely they want to accept or even see any evidence that they may have been wrong.

It does not matter how obvious it is if you are not prepared to accept the possibility that you are wrong.
Highly recommend adding the book Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts. A good summary (and application) of cognitive dissonance theory. It's also a good book to discuss with a JW because it doesn't touch on religious issues. Has a nice application to marriage to, and understand how we justify our beliefs can either strengthen it or destroy it.

Did you watch R rated movies when you were in it?
by ldrnomo inlast night, i watched an r rated movie that featured violence.
at least 30 people were shot in the first 45 min of the movie.. while i was in and an elder, i watched r rated movies all the time just didn't talk about it.
so how many of you watched r rated movies even though "mother" said not to?.

No. I remember being kind of disturbed when Elders would go up and give talks about not watching violent, immoral, spiritistic entertainment, but then socially talk about movies they saw that featured these. They'd make up for it by bashing other movies that they didn't want to see (That being said I always rationalized watching Star Trek, even thought it was occasionally denounced at the Assembly).
Looking back I understand them a bit better know. You can't say what you really feel about things as a JW. You say what you are expected to say, especially on the platform.

I am also curious if djeggnog is here under his own volition, or if has been assigned by the faithful slave comment on message boards in order to combat apostate propoganda.

How do you pour the blood out of a fish???
by pirata inokay, so noah was given dominion over the fish, birds, and animals.
he could kill them and eat them, but not their blood.
the mosaic law dictated pouring out the blood, which is then assumed that is the method used by noah to avoid eating blood.. how do you drain the blood out of a fish?

Thanks for the detail Low-Key. I haved learned a good anatomy lesson today
I also found some info on another site that confirms that commercial fishermen bleed their fish for the best market value price.

i just came back from the memorial
by J. Hofer init wasn't all that bad.
met a few friends who also don't give too much about it and had some great laughs afterwards.
we talked about how we still remember when only about 7000 took from the emblems and now its more than 11000. we also laughed about how it would look like having jesus and his disciples pass around wine and bread on a plate like that.. all in all it was the same procedure as every year.

Good lord no--I haven't been to a regular meeting for about 5 years now I think. No, I go for my elderly parents. They don't shun me or any of my friends who no longer go, even though they know I think it's a crock of shit. They don't preach at me, so I figure that the one night per year when they sheepishly ask "would you like to come to the Memorial?" I can do it for them. It makes them happy and in a few years, they'll be gone, so I bite the bullet for them.
That's very nice of you. I'm glad your parents are putting christian love ahead of organization procedures.

of the mags that get placed, how many get read?
by highdose inanother magazine question.
of the magazines that actualy get placed by the jw's.
once the door is closed, how many house holders do you think will actualy read them?

Does the WT say anything about disposing of old material? I would assume they would say to place it somewhere?
I couldn't find much on this (other than suggestions to place old magazines), but I know a number of witnesses who recycle really old issues, or their personal copies at the end of the year.ar.
A friend who worked at Bethel said that one of his tasks for a while was taking out all the extra hardbound yearbooks that had accumulated over the years, ripping off the covers, and then sending the pages out for recycling (not sure what happened to the covers).

My friend placed magazines at a return visit. I told him once we got back to the car that he had placed his personal copy (I was underlining and his name on the front when we were at the door). We went back to the house to swap the personal copy for a fresh copy, but the householder, a bit embarassed, said she couldn't because she had already thrown them in the garbage!

And some official JW comments on the matter:

Questions From Readers
? Must fish be bled before they are eaten?—U.S.A.
The Bible does not specifically mention the bleeding of fish. Only in the case of land animals or fowl do we read: “As for any man . . . who in hunting catches a wild beast or a fowl that may be eaten, he must in that case pour its blood out and cover it with dust.”—Lev. 17:13.
Fish that were suitable for food according to the terms of the Mosaic law did not contain a quantity of blood sufficient to be poured out and covered with dust. Evidently for this reason the Law set forth no precise statement about bleeding fish.
There being no Scriptural stipulation to squeeze or soak meat to remove blood, no one is under obligation to take extreme measures to extract blood from fish. Of course, the blood of every sort of creature represents its life and is therefore sacred. So, if, on cutting a fish open, a person sees an accumulation of blood, he should remove it.
*** w61 11/1 p. 670 Questions From Readers *** ? In view of the Bible command on abstinence from blood, how are fish and insects to be prepared in order to be acceptable for food?—B. F., U.S.A. Fish was a common food among the Jews. Jesus himself ate it, and on different occasions he directed successful fishing operations, both with a net and with a hook. (Num. 11:5; Matt. 14:17; 17:27; Luke 5:1-11; 24:42, 43) Some insects, too, were used for food. (Lev. 11:21; Mark 1:6) Of course, the amount of blood contained in these creatures may be very small, so that it is impossible to pour out their blood; yet that is what was required to make the meat of a creature acceptable for food. (Lev. 17:13) It was not required that the meat be squeezed or that it be soaked; simply that the blood be poured out. If there is not enough blood to pour it out, Christians are not under obligation to take extreme measures to be sure that some blood is extracted. Of course, if, on cutting the creature open, an accumulation of blood is clearly in evidence, this can easily be removed, and it would be proper to do so.
*** w54 5/1 p. 287 Questions From Readers *** Basing our position on the Bible, we shall have a balanced view, neither fanatically opposing all killing of animals, nor wantonly hunting them for sport. Jesus ate meat, both fish and lamb. He directed a successful fishing operation using a net, and also instructed that a fish be caught with a hook. (Luke 24:42, 43; Ex. 12:3, 8; Matt. 26:17-21; Luke 5:4-6; Matt. 17:27) Apparently fish required no special attention in bleeding, since there is no instruction concerning them; but the requirements relative to game birds and animals are specific and must be followed by theocratic hunters seeking to vary their meat diet with some wild game. Bullet wounds of today, like arrow wounds or fang-and-claw wounds from beasts of prey during the time of application of the Mosaic law, seldom effect adequate drainage of blood. Hence the hunter must make it complete by using his knife, whether it spoils a trophy or not.
