if samuelsson is right about crucifixion all lexica need revision.
last friday gunnar samuelsson successfylly defended his thesis "crucifixion in antiquity: an inquiry into the background of the new testament terminology of crucifixion" at gothenburg university (supervisor samuel byrskog).
the external examiner erkki koskenniemi professor of abo university, finland, was drastic in his opening when he said that "if gunnar samuelsson is right, then all lexica will need revision on this point.

Debator wrote-
The subject is about YHWH(well even these letters are a transliteration of the original Hebrew word for Jehovah since we cannot write the language)
The Simple question is... Can we use transliterated words for bible names in other languages?
My answer is no. Why, because no one ever called God by his name. The YHWH name was written because you never spoke the name of God. That's why is it unpronounceable that's why it has always been that way.
The one name you need to call on for salvation is the Savior-Jesus Christ

uhmm, 5 pages later and I think I finally found a strong WT point.
They illicit very emotional responses from both, those who truely know scripture and those who think they know scripture.
Very entertaining and educational to boot.
Keep it up guys!

Hey, choosing to be a pacifist is a wonderful thing and I would applaud anyone who can walk that path.
That said, I feel that the requirement that one mustn't join the military has absolutely no basis as the bible gives no indication that one should not join.
Some people choose not to drink [for numerous reasons,] and that's a wonderful thing, but to say that you mustn't drink to get salvation has no basis in scripture. The same can be said for the requirement of no military service.

I must respectively disagree with designs and jedimaster. The no war thing is unscriptural. The old testament is filled with battles being fought at God's command. The new testament has many examples of Jesus meeting soldiers and he never once instructed them to leave their occupation. As a matter of fact in Math 8;10, Jesus praises a centurian for his faith. Acts 10;22-48 speaks of Cornelius, another [Roman] centurian, as the first Gentile member of the Church. an officer, a rightous and God fearing man. In Luke 3;14 John the Baptist instructs those in the military 'not to harass anybody or accuse them falsely and to be satisfied with their provisions'. Where is this no wars thing? It also makes no sense to not defend your loved ones, your community or your country against unjust agression. Where would the world be? Much worse off I am sure. I need only to read scripture to confirm that. It also makes no sense to say that if everyone were a JW, there would be no wars. Only if everyone followed the WT laws on war would there be no war. The same can be said if everyone followed the 10 commandments, then there would be no war. Who wouldn't defend their home and family from thugs? Better question. Who wouldn't want to defend their home from thugs? dc
does porneia, frequently translated "fornication" refer to sex before marriage?
catholic theologan that i know says it does not.
any thoughts?.
In Acts 15;20 , James instructs that the Gentiles to abstain from things polluted by idols, from porniea and from what is strangled and from blood. Porniea in that text refers to marriages that are considered unlawful by Jewish standards.
I got that from Catholic apologist Jason Evert.

the watchtower has been known for over 130 years as a great scriptural cherry-picker.
they pick out disparate unrelated verses and combine them to support the wackiest of wacky doctrines.. on the other hand there are many scriptures they almost never address, whether because they contradict wt doctrine or because they simply don't have a clue what they mean or how to spin them to the wt advantage.. one of these is revelation 19:1 that mentions a "great crowd" "in heaven.
" the only time it is ever brought up it is dismissed.
Designs - This is typical of your posts. Repeating the hate you read in the Watchtower, not answering legitimate questions and making broad statements with out any proof. How about something real like a real false teaching of the Catholic church. Can't even find one, can you?
My post informs you of some teachings of the Church Fathers. What do your posts inform us on?

Designs wrote - Masochism, sadism, Hell, Killing each other.............the Trinitarian way of life.
Perhaps Designs has never heard of the ante-Nicene Fathers, or perhaps you are familiar with the Watchtower booklet 'Should you believe in the Trinity?'
Some quotes with references for educational purposes only-
'Therefor these words testify explicitly that he [Jesus] is witnessed to by him [the Father] who established these things, as deserving to be worshipped, as God and as Christ' Justin Martyr-Dialogue with Trypho the Jew, 43
'Jesus Christ our Lord and God and Savior and king' Irenaeus-Against Heresies, 1:10:1
'But that he is himself in his own right, beyond all men who ever lived, God, and Lord, and King Eternal, and the Incarnate Word, proclaimed by all the prophets, the apostles, and by the Spirit himself, may be seen by all who have attained tp even a samll portion of the truth' Irenaeus- Against Heresies, 3:19:2
For' before the morning star it was' and 'in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God'.....This Word, then, the Christ..this very Word has appeared as man, he alone being both God and man...The Word, who in the beginning bestowed on us life as Creator when he formed us, taught us to live well when he appeared as our Teacher; that as God he might afterwards conduct us to the life that never ends' Clement of Alexandria - Exhortation to the Heathen, 1
'Him we believe to have been sent bythe Father into the Virgin, and to have been born of her- being both Man and God, the Son of Man and the Son of God, and to have been called by the name Jesus Christ...while the mystery of the dispensation is still guarded, which distibutes the Unity into a Trinity, placing them in their order of the three Persons- the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost' Tertullian - Against Praxeas, 2
my apologies for moving from scriptures to church fathers
