Has anybody read _The Midwife's Tale_ by S. Tepper (I think, not certain off the top of my head.) It describes an imaginary country (Gilead) being run as a "theocracy". Scared the heck out of me when I read it years ago. It was exactly the way I could see the WTBTS running a government.

They wouldn't marry me and my straight-as-an-arrow-though-worldly husband nearly 18 years ago...'course he was a teacher and wasn't making quite so much money as Ex-Symbol.
My sister was disfellowshipped for shoplifting less than $5 worth of stuff. Not that shoplifting is a good thing, but still seems that there might be a double standard
Anybody remember that Michael Jackson was a Witness? This was years ago-during the "Thriller" era, though. I always thought it was funny that it was apparently OK for him to make that macabre video and "Billy Jean", but he wasn't disfellowshipped. Finally, when he became totally off the wall, it was announced that he'd "disassociated himself".
Money talks.

>>>We should not be ashamed to be witnesses and are happy to defend
our faith (funny they werent in that mood when dateline came about)<<<If I were still a rank-and-file publisher, this would make me FURIOUS!!! I'm supposed to be ready to go to those doors and "defend our faith", but the Society (with all those sort-of Holy Spirit backed brothers and professional legal and publicity department)was afraid to "defend our faith" with Dateline????
Sigh...My Mom wouldn't watch the show and when I offered to let her borrow my tape so she'd know what she might be facing in service she told me that she didn't want to watch it because she might be "troubled". She also said that this letter made her "feel comforted". Sigh again.

JW "Zone", LOLOLOL!
by SYN inwhat do you get when you put a bunch of computer literate star trek fans together on a forum?
mindless propoganda with an enterprise slant, that's what!
to the person (forgotten you nick, sorry) who showed me a link to this site, shot a lot!

Jewel
>>>>For starters, how do these Dubs justify themselves being on this site? Isn't it perfectly clear to them (as outlined in a recent Awake) that "Star Trek" is a show that deals with people living very far in the future, without religion, and is therefore automatically on the "banned viewing" list?<<<<
Hey, I was "counciled" 20-(ahem)-something years ago about Star Trek (and Star Wars). They were "not fit for the spiritually minded because WE KNOW what Jehovah's plans for our future are..."
This gives me two thoughts:
1. What does it mean that I've remembered that conversation so clearly for allllll these years, and
2. Of course, that was back when "this generation" meant those who were at least 13 or 14 in 1914. Maybe now that the "generation thing" has stretched out apparently into infinity, Star Trek is OK because we still may be in "the last days" in the 23rd century....Jewel

Cases involving minors
by TheMatrix inmany on this forum criticize elders as being incompetent.
i've know a few myself, but you must agree that there are also very good elders also.. well, here is a case and i would like to know what you would do if you were an elder.. a fourteen (14) year old male has sex with a twelve (12) year old female.
the female confesses to her parents and the parents report to the elders.
-
Jewel
OK-here's what I would do:
I'd ask the parents if they were OUT OF THEIR MINDS wasting their time talking to me when they should be-
1. Talking to the police, or if they'd done that,
2. Making an emergency appointment with a family counselor
Suppose that's why I was never asked to serve as an elder...either my bad attitude---or, maybe--my gender...
By the way, if you:
>>>4. I would have called the police on the abuser with her.
5. I would have also recommended that she speak to a professional to discuss how the abuse has affected her psychologically.<<<You would have:
6. Been counseled by the other elders for not allowing Jehovah's Society to handle the situation.
7. Been removed as an elder. -

Man, ain't this classic:
>>>The female confesses to her parents and the parents report to the elders<<<
Yup, that 12 yo has to confess that she probably led the poor young brother on with her sexy ankle socks and patent leather meeting shoes...
That sounds so patriarchal I could vomit.
Geeeeesssshhhhhh!

So glad that so many felt the same way I did. I couldn't explain my response to my never-been-JW-husband.
When I was a teen, I remember we'd have sing-alongs. Pot-luck supper and then the entertainment for the evening would be to sit and sing Kingdom songs for a couple of hours. I don't like to sing, don't have the voice or the throat for it. Some of us "youth" would sit outside talking and trying to escape the radar, but it wouldn't be long before someone would round us up because the "singing was starting."
Gag!! Haven't thought about one of those for a looooonnnggg time...
