Personally, I find it rather pompous. The notion that "god" saves me, but not you or your innocent child. Yes indeed god is watching over me, sorry 'bout you.

Name Something Good About Being A Jehovah's Witness

I was just thinking about this too, I was born in.
I was also thinking about the whole Xmas thing. The way they made it sound like such a horrible ugly selfish thing, and in particular the whole notion of people being "forced" to spend money they didn't have. The resulting stress etc. But think of the conventions. It didn't matter if you couldn't afford dental work, or the kids needed new shoes they weren't getting, you WILL go to all the conventions. My family never had an actual vacation when I was a child, we were always too broke (not to mention doctors, dentists, or store bought clothes). Never missed a convention though.

The few things that I did benefit by from being a JW could have been obtained elsewhere - and for considerably less overall cost.
Precisely. Nothing good came of being a JW.
As for not being required to deal with the holidays, presents etc., I see it as a wonderful year end experience to look forward to every year. It's a privilege. I don't see other people as filth at all. Just this past week, doing some simple grocery shopping in the jam packed store I had so many small moments of pleasant interaction with people. I often initiate conversation, people 9 times out of 10 respond cheerfully, and even appreciatively. Making connection is good for us.

Mom, why is the atheist angry? UN General Assembly votes to allow gays to be executed without cause.
by bohm inun general assembly votes to allow gays to be executed without causegay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people were once again subject to the whims of homophobia and religious and cultural extremism this week, thanks to a united nations vote that removed sexual orientation from a resolution that protects people from arbitrary executions.
in other words, the un general assembly this week voted to allow lgbt people to be executed without cause.. http://thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/un-general-assembly-votes-to-allow-gays-to-be-executed-without-cause/politics/2010/11/20/15449.
the world is apparently so full religious nutjobs who think arbitrary execution of gays and lesbians is such a valueable thing, that a resolution to ban it cant get passed in the un.

Nick, that's hideous. The audience sitting there chuckling over the words of this monster. Mass insanity.

Bristol Palin and her typical black & white right-wing / religious mindset
by Simon inso, bristol palin is through to the final on dancing with the stars even though it's obvious to everyone with half a brain that she doesn't deserve to be based on her dancing.
she's there simply because the obsessive palin fundies are voting for her.. i thought it was interesting listening to her describe people who think she shouldn't be there as "the haters".. what black and white thinking and typical of the religious / right-wing mentality.
people can't have an opinion that is based on reality and see that better dancers were voted off while she stayed way past her skill level warranted.

This subject never crosses my mind until one of these threads comes up, someone knocks on my door, the guy with the 50 foot cross on the hill I can see from my front porch puts the lights on it, some piece of religiously inspired legislation is put forth, or the rare occasion someone asks me my religion/where do I go to church. Then it's either the reaction of pity, shock, mistrust or fear. Believers often seem to equate Atheism with baby sacrificing devil worship.

Tammy, the only reason that the charity issue came up, is because a Christian was making a statement on the difference between the Atheist and the Believer when it comes to giving. The discussion was not focused on the outcome of charity, but on the motivation of the giver. If a child only shares his toys when an adult is supervising him to, is he really sharing? When giving tothe church, isn't a churchgoer actually giving to benefit himself and his circle?
All in all, another example of the feeling of superiority by believers over non believers. And another good example of why some Atheists might be angry.
