"The heat and light from burning Watchtower publications..."
I would say that gives a whole new meaning to the term that they use... "The light keeps getting brighter".
Sure does! Throw another Watchtower on the fire!
a little bit of background (for those of you who came in late).... i used to be a jw (no joke!).
i married a jw wife.
we were married for about 20 years, and i couldn't take it anymore - since i was no longer a jw, and didn't believe in their doctrines anymore.. i got divorced in 2002. since that time, i was solo, and then met a nice non-jw woman.

Terry,
hahahaha!!! You crack me up! If you remember, I posted recently about going to a Nine-Lives bookstore and spotting 3 or 4 bound volumes on the top shelf in the 'get rid of' section of the store.
I called my wife over and asked her if she likes 'scary books'. She didn't know what I was talking about and slowly responded... "welllll... not really..."
I then pointed up to the books and said something like, "Scary books!" {said in a 'I see dead people' voice}
She just laughed and we both walked away from that potential disaster.
...and like you... I had NO desire to even open one of them.
In fact... there's another used store that we go to that has several bookcases of used books. If I happen on a used WT publication, I will remove it from the shelf, turn it around backwards (so the binding is not showing), and put it back. I don't even read it... I don't care to.

So. My current wife has had exposure to JWs when she was previously married. She was contacted by JW door-knockers (that almost sounds ... perverted...).
She 'studied' with the jws, and attended their meetings... I don't think that she got as far as going door to door before she decided that it didn't make any sense, and called it off. (She didn't drink the kool-aid, thank goodness!)
So. Last week, she and her mom went to her storage room, and were doing some cleaning, and re-packing of stuff in storage. She opened one box, and said, "OH!! This is going in the dumpster!"
Her mother was curious, and asked, "What?"
My wife showed her. She had kept a box of Jw publications that she had collected when she was exploring the religion.
Her mom said, "Oh! You had better not take that home with you, Jim-TX will not like it!"
hahahahahaha
So, she took the box (or boxes) to the dumpster and gave the literature the ol' 'heave ho'.
She's great!
For those that may think that I go ballistic if I see any jw litteratrash - it's not true. But, I know when things need to go in the trash, and jw litteratrash is some of that material that you don't even 'recycle'. Straight to the dump.
She honestly didn't know that she had it, because when she got divorced from her ex, she just packed up all of her stuff, and transported it to Texas (from Missouri), and put it into storage. She's just now getting around to going through some of it.
When she told me the story, I just laughed.

i just got in from my daughters homecoming(she is a cheerleader and these guys make a huge deal out of this stuff).
they play 3 football games of various age groups.
it starts at 8 in the morning and just ended at 1:30. i just got in the house literally 5 minutes ago and i had to share.
Well, since you only went to their table once... if you had returned later to ask them another question - they could have called you a 'return visit'.
But... since you didn't do that, they can only count 8 hours of field service time - no return visits.
Unless!!... They have been at the park before. Returning to the park... yes, I guess that counts as a return visit. I hope the park is interested... then they can return in a week, and count another return visit.
In a few weeks, maybe they can start a 'bible study' with the park, and add that to their time.
WooHoo!!! We're really getting things going now!
Where's the nearest trash bin? If they toss a load of publications in it, they can count those as placements!
What more could a 'pioneer' ask for!??! Return visits, bible studies, and placements - along with 8 hours!!!

i am currently on a business trip for a trade show in another city.
as i'm walking to the convention center, i run into 2 jw's preaching.
one is about mid 60s the other probably mid 30's.
" How can one tell whether they're in a cult when they will only refer to their leadership (cult leaders) to tell them they're not a cult?"
...and this is exactly what they do, too.
Many years ago, when I was still married to my wife who is a JW, I asked her one day if the JWs were a cult. I showed her a 2-page list of questions that I had printed off from an ex-JW forum. There was about 20 questions in all.
When I handed it to her, she literally 'shrieked' like those folks on the movie 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'. I had to calm her down before she blew a gasket.
(I had NEVER heard her react like that before in all of the almost 20 years of marriage.)
Anyway, after she calmed down, she said that she would 'research' the topic and get back to me.
A couple of days later, she told me that she had researched their publications, and had come to the conclusion that the JWs were NOT a cult.
Well, that was that.
If you ask a liar if he/she is a liar, and they say 'no', then they must not be a liar.
according to the bible timetable, man's history on earth has been nearly 6,000 years.
adam was created in 4026 b.c.e., which means that six thousand years of human history end about the fall of 1975 c.e.
we are in the great 7,000-year rest day of god, starting at the time he rested after the creation of adam and eve.
Terry... you silly guy... don't you know that all of this has happened, and it is invisible? If you can't see that, then you are not worthy. ;)
Jesus has been ruling for 99 years - invisibly...
Armageddon occurred in 1975 - invisibly...
Satan has been caged - invisibly...
We're living in the 'new system' - invisibly...
Do you see the pattern? Well, of course you don't! It's invisible!
Just like the King's new clothes.

Hilarious! I just hope she doesn't have a Kryptonite like Superman does...
ones that have themes that come uncomfortabllly close to the cult dynamic.. i already got him to watch the obsolete man on twilight zone.
he sauggested watching some old tz again tonight so i wioll pick where is everybody, and escape clause.. i have heard oters say the movie truman show was a good movie as is the matrix ( though i detest violence).
any more suggestions for my personal handy dandy list?.
Well, I can think of one or two that deal with shunning - that most witnesses may not 'get'...
The Jazz Singer (1980) - Neil Diamond - deals with shunning, by the father - just because the son grows up and chooses to follow a singing career instead of remaining a staunch jew.
Fiddler on the Roof 1971) - three daughters that go their seperate ways - one is shunned for her choices.
Witness (1985) - Harrison Ford (any movie with him in it is good) - about an Amish woman that is outcast by the community when she pairs up with an outsider (Harrison) - there's more to it, but it has to do with shunning in a small Amish community.
The ironic part is that I have seen these movies with family members who are JWs. They will comment on how harsh these people in the movies are for their shunning practices... yet they do not see that they themselves do it to disfellowshipped witnesses.
Movies are very powerful, and can evoke emotions. If used properly, they can also be used to show how JWs also practice the same things as seen in the movies.

when you're part of a lovely big group of people who all seem to be happy in their beliefs, it's easier to quell your own doubts.
if i was the only person left in the congregation who still went on the door to door work, because every body else had stopped going , having said out loud what most think, ''it's a waste of time'', how long do you think before i too would cease going door to door?.
i know from my own perspective that having lots of fellow witnesses around me, steered me into making life changing decisions.
As with anything... not everyone would walk out. Let's say that you get 75% of the 'male members' (let the reader use discernment) to leave. That leaves 25%... that would get promoted to 'elder' status (if they did not already have that title) - to fill the gaps.
Now, you have dumbed down the IQ of the organization even further.
The reading level drops from 7th grade level to... ???
