  i hate people's constant open hand for money, it's the weak individuals asking others to pull their weight.

  my family worked extra hours instead of begging the strong members for district assembly money, cat food for seven cats or tiny little rag-a-muffins weiner dogs.. .

  Lol... good first post. It took me two reads through to figure out exactly what you were talking about, but it was funny. Those pubs were always something else who always called around the hall looking for rides everywhere, to the meetings, to the grocery stores., to pick up medicine. Also calling around looking for somebody in the hall to fix their busted car or house instead of hiring someone.

  i was browsing through some of the boe letters (made available here: http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/bible/243938/1/all-letters-to-elders-from-the-branch-1981-2012-boe) and came across the 3/15/96 letter about persons with communicable diseases.

  it specifically mentions aids several times in the letter and seems to be primarily targeted at that population.

  These questions were added in 1996, so I guess that's when they started asking them. I was dunked in 1996, coincidentally, and I don't remember this question, but it's not something that would have left much of an impression at the time, I suspect. I was dunked in a pool in a JW-owned assembly hall, where the pool was always kept filled, so maybe they kept those chlorinated, but not pools in rental halls or stadiums. BTW, the letter reads in part:

  " To assist the elders in providing guidance for those with a communicable and potentially fatal disease who request baptism, the following additional questions are to be reviewed with candidates for baptism. In addition to this letter, an insert for the Our Ministry book outlining this information will soon be provided for each elder.

  When covering question 4 on page 191 under the subheading "Sanctity of Life," be sure to include the following questions:

  (a) What responsibility rests upon a person who is infected with a communicable disease that is potentially fatal?

  Keeping an eye, not in personal interest upon just your own matters but also in personal interest upon those ofthe others.-Phil. 2:4.

  All things, therefore, that you want men to do to you, you also must likewise do to them.-Matt. 7:12.

  (b) To avoid transmitting a potentially fatal disease to others, (I) why would it be better for an infected person not to initiate public

  displays of affection such as hugging and kissing?
  (2) why would it be best to attend the Congregation Book Study at the

  Kingdom Hall, if at all possible?
  (3) why should infected ones not react negatively when some choose not to

  invite them into their homes?
  (4) why would it be wise to choose voluntarily to have a blood test before

  beginning a courtship?

  When covering Question 3 on page 217, be sure to ask the following question: (a) If one has a communicable disease, why is letting the presiding overseer

  know about it before that one gets baptized the loving thing to do?"

  I recall the pools being chlorinated, but I'm not positive. As far as the elders not knowing if someone has AIDS, in the same letter I was referring to, it said that a question would be added to the baptismal questions about the responsibility of someone with a communicable disease to inform the elders. So basically everyone that gets baptized has to promise the elders they would tell them if they had AIDS.

  Also, I don't think they could sue over not being invited over, at least in the U.S. Besides obviously not suing if they want to remain in good standing in the org, people can invite whoever they want to their house socially. The discrimination laws don't apply to private social settings. Not illegal, just unchristian. WTBTS.

  I happened to see the movie Philadelphia last week, which came out in 1993, and the discussion of AIDS in that movie and how it is transmitted is basically in line with what we know now. Of course, stereotypes and demonization of the virus were more common back then, with people wanting to classify it as some kind of gay plague. Definitely shows the ignorance of the GB.

It specifically mentions AIDS several times in the letter and seems to be primarily targeted at that population. Among other gems:

  • Persons with AIDS can't be baptized in the general baptism pool - it would have to be in a hotel tub or "running body of water." (Does that mean a lake doesn't count?? And are they afraid of polluting a body of water with AIDS, unless it has a running current???)
  • They should not hug or kiss others
  • They should only attend the Book Study at the Kingdom Hall (not that this would apply now, anyway)
  • If others in the cong don't invite AIDS victims to their homes, such victims should "not react negatively"

  I'm positive that it was known in 1996 how AIDS was spread, and it's not by hugging, kissing, being in a room with someone, or even bathing in the same pool. Do they not believe what science has proven? Does anyone know if this policy is still in effect? It makes them look so backwards - not that this is the only policy that makes them appear that way. I couldn't find a letter changing this policy.

  it is easy to identify people who want something.

  as a business person, you learn to identify the needs in a crowd and think about how you can supply them with a product.

  i haven't been on here much in the last couple of months.

  but i have shared custody so my ex keeps me informed of 'witness holidays' where she would have custody and i would get make up time.

  what's missing is the 3 day conventions.

  But can you really believe their self reported numbers?

  I don't doubt them. They only grew with the overall population growth, which means they didn't grow at all in proportion to the general population. Foreign language groups are still dunking new converts at a reasonable rate. It makes sense because some from these groups tend to have less education and access to reliable independant information. If you go by outside survey numbers, they would have about 2 Million JWs based on how people self-report (e.g. inactive people and minors being reported as JWs whereas they only count people who turn in a time report for the month).

  while it is true that jehovahs witnesses are hated and opposed in all the nations of the earth, this is in fulfillment of what was foretold to be an identifying mark of genuine worshipers of the one living and true god.
