i was shocked by the audacity to be asked to come to his public talk, being told i don't have to believe or come back but can simply come to show my support for him.
but it's ok...to go pay money to be entertained by an NFL or NBA team?? Or watch it on TV....or miss a meeting to watch an NCAA tournament game???? But not support your grandkids who are doing it for fun? The same little kids you claim to love???

I actually called them on that last year for the memorial. I had asked my parents if they would come to my boys basketball games and support their grandsons. I coach, the boys play...it would be fun. Their response, "We don't agree with it and never have. It is a no brainer, we will not be going!" So when my mom asked me to go to the memorial I responded, "When I asked you to do something that was important to me and the boys, your response was...'We don't agree with it...It is a no brainer, we will not be going.' So it seems only appropriate that I respond in kind....It is a no brainer, we will not be going." Yeah, she was pretty miffed.
But I felt pretty good...

I love that you all said you would meet them after the meeting for lunch/dinner! LOL That's awesome. Their answer..."no because you didn't get all dressed up and sit to listen to something you don't agree with, NO FOOD FOR YOU!" The sad thing is a few years ago, I may have pulled that same BS. SMH

undercover- oh geez! haha...he actually uninvited you?? haha, wow! See, it isn't at all about hanging out and talking...being friends. It's about sitting in the same place for 2 hours, not talking or being friends at all.
How many friends would say come to my house and let's just sit w/o talking for two hours? But the JWs base all their relationships on the fact that they all sit in the same place for 4 hours a week...without talking and being true friends.

I was asked to go to one of my dad's public talks too. It wasn't his first but they really put the pressure on for us to go.
We didn't go, but we said we would go spend some time with them at their house...cookout and let the kids play. Yeah, they didn't want that. I guess that showed their true intentions were for us to be at the meetings, not to be together as a family.
where is the evidence you were "wronged", "mistreated", dis-fellowshipped for no reason, blah, blah, blah.. some of you seem to want "evidence" to provide credibility to other's statements at times.. where is your evidence?.

i was reading our study article for next week's wt study there is a subheading in there about treatment of disfellowshipped ones.
in one paragraph they slam the term, "necessary business" when dealing with a family member who is df'd.. this is so confusing.
in one hand they have coined that phrase "necessary business" with relatives that have df relatives.

Dad is an elder and he's talked so much through the years, telling people what to do, how to treat their own family members, telling people how he and mom raised such good kids in the 'truth'. Telling them exactly what to do to make sure your sons become bethelites and elders. OH THE IRONY.....toot, toot....toot, toot....wait a sec....OH SH_T...now what is he gonna tell people. Now he has to live the way he's been telling people for years. I mean he can't try to win us over now by showing love, that would be going against everything he ever said.
so, one of the things that is catching me off guard is that i have forgotten how to pray.. as a jw we were all told to pray, but when we really look at it, the prayers are just as structured and mind numbing as those of the catholic church reciting the rosary.
what caught my attention was stephen at act 7:59 where he calls on jesus (not jehovah) to receive him.
he prayed to jesus.. yet, as a jw, the prayers you always here begin like this: "jehovah god, our loving heavenly father..." and end in "in jesus name, amen".
I know exactly how you feel! It's crazy how repetitive praying was as a JW. I do like some of the above comments, it seems like its simply whatever works for the individual.

My parents apply 'Necessary Family Business' as ONLY when someone in the family is expected to die and is in the hospital. Other than that there is nothing 'necessary'.
The sad part is they apply this 'Necessary Family Business' to me and my wife and kids, and we are inactive. Well, we did tell them we could no longer follow men....;)

i am not an expert on this issue.
i have read and re-read information about it, but i guess i am somewhat dense when it comes to this topic.. my question is simple: the watchtower suggests that they believe the bible is the unerring word or god.
that it must be believed above anything else.

That is a great point, so why try to make a square peg go into a round hole. It doesn't matter does it? It's just a made up way to try to show everyone else....see, WE are the only right way, because WE say so.
I always thought it was a bit 'out there' when I went to the hall to make these claims on dates. Especially when explanations include...."lunar years" as opposed to normal years....blah, blah, blah. But then try to make it fit.
