LDH,
If they were women, I'd say there's a good chance they were coming back (the ones I knew were really out to 'help' people). Young guys? If they're anything like me and my friends were, they're just jackasses out to collect a couple service hours.
Bodhivista,
I was just thinking that I wouldn't think of Newsweek as apostate. You could probably have taken it out at the door and I wouldn't have run (like I would have if you had pulled out, say, a Ray Franz book!). I think that it's a great way to 'witness' to witnesses that come to my door.

Gilead Couples - *gag*
by joeshmoe ini was just thinking about the snoozefest i used to go through with each new gilead class.
the introductions were the worst!
im not sure you get the same feel from the doctored up articles in the wt, but listening to the couples was just maddening.. there was always at least 3 or 4 couples that would say the exact same thing: well, i wanted to be a missionary but couldnt go without a partner and my husband/wife was in the same predicament so we got married and here we are.

OK, these people dont need a marriage license; they need a business contract. Just crazy!
I wonder if this is an outcropping of how the JWs treat faith, taking out the heart and passion of it and replacing it with structure and rules. I guess they figure if thats how it is with faith, why not love?
There cant be anything healthy about that.

Would you rather have more time or more cash?
by Leander init seems like unless you're incredibly wealthy or lucky that its impossible to have both at the same time, especially if you're a working stiff.
right now between my wife and i we make a fairly decent living, however we don't have a lot of time to do things together (or alone) until the weekend comes around.
and we all know how short weekends can be, not to mention if a lot of errands need to be done that can eat up your time fairly quick.

I waste both, but feel less guilty about the money than the time. So I'll take more money to waste!!

Ken,
Finding pennies was pretty much the only thing that made service bearable for the last few months as a Wit. Myself and two other brothers usually had a competition to see who would find the penny first that morning. I didn't win most mornings, but at least it distracted me! We tried to include a couple of the pioneer sisters, but they only frowned and shook their heads. Oh well.
P.S. I not sure they ever brought me luck, but then again, I'm pretty sure I soon spent them.

Why I Stopped Apologising For The WTS
by NewWay inwhy i stopped apologising for the watchtower society - part 1. .
in response to requests for information on why i stopped being an apologist for the organisation, i have decided to write the following article.
what is written is not meant to attack the beliefs of jws, but rather to show why i personally came to the conclusion that i could no longer support the organisation.

I had a similar experience involving the 607BCE date. I was doing some research for an instruction talk from the All Scripture Inspired bk. It simply stated that there was plenty of evidence from Assyrian/Babylonian archeological finds to pinpoint the date at 607.
I had up to that point had no reason to ever question the society, just took it at face value. But for the talk, I thought it would be nice to bring out some additional information. So I hopped on the internet for some quick research. To my dismay all evidence seemed to point a date around 20 years later. And the evidence just kept growing into a mountain.
I gave my talk, simply quoting the society literature on this issue, much as i'd heard thousands of other brothers from the stage. But that evening after my talk (and all that night and into the morning) I continued my research, and found that for the first time in my life, I simply disagreed with the society stand.
And that I think is the point. We all reach that moment of truth from different directions, but when we get there, the issue is: I'm not allowed to disagree. But I DO disagree. And it begins to dawn on you that you've given away your personal right to decide right and wrong for yourself to someone else.
As you said:
. It wasn't that I wanted to be right and the organisation be wrong. What annoyed me was the arrogance of the society in expecting that the sheep should just assume that where a conflict of understanding lay, it would automatically be the sheep who needed to be 'readjusted'.
And from there, the scales just kept falling from my eyes. The control that this man-made organization had over my life, that I had given it over my life, was stunning. I never fully saw that until I was ready to get out. And until those inside realize on their own that they are under that control -- and how powerful and extreme that control is -- they won't fight against it.
I'm looking forward to more of your story!

LMAO @ LDH!
I bet some did! I probably would've just headed down the street to a local pub (like I did all the time at my conventions during lunch!) I can picture elders looking around to check if any from their hall were missing when they came back in. Can you say "back room"?
