Can you choose what you believe?
by noonehome ini hear it all the time.. people who decide it isn't the truth and leave are said to deep down know they're leaving the truth, choosing instead whatever ideology suits their imperfect desires.
in the new dvd the little kid asks why people believe in evolution and the dad basically says people believe whatever they want.
the actual issue is never actually addresed though: "did life evolve?

It’s a good question. Religion is an 'optional extra' in life- it's not necessary for our survival and there are no immediate consequences for choosing one religion or another, so people really don’t look at it objectively, preferring to go with what ‘feels right’, rather than what can be proved right by years of open-minded research and questioning.
I guess many people stay in religions or join a different one because of the ‘feel-good’ factor- the rituals, the fellowship, and trusting in some higher intellect- whether that is the elders, a priest, or ‘god’- because feeling confident and motivated in life is very important. People will choose to more or less believe in their religion because the pay-off is there.
Searching for actual facts, and sorting truth from myths, making decisions for yourself- that is a much different experience and requires a whole different mindset. -

Unbiased sources for research
by PrincessCynic incan anyone point me in the direction of unbiased (or outside) sources for research.
i'm particularly interested in anything showing the teachings or russell and rutherford and proof of what the wts society was teaching in 1919?.
i don't want to direct my friend to an apostate site..

If your friend doesn’t mind downloading large PDF’s this site is above suspicion :
The publications have to be searched for using key words, but there are plenty there.

What would be your favorite job if you could do anything.?
by new hope and happiness inon the basis that most of us realise the w.t wasnt really the best " job" or way to spend our days, it would be fun to find out what people would really have liked to have done with there lifes and if this is still possible.
or maybe its not even a very realistic ambition just a dream.
in my dreams i stay at home all day and make a living from being a professional artist.maybe i need a phycholgist?.

one reason for the dumbing down of the org
by Magnum ina lot of us have said that theres been a dumbing down in jw land.
its just not like it used to be especially a few decades ago.
it seems to me that if jw are right and the end of the world is near, the spiritual food should get tastier and more nourishing as time goes on, but it's getting more and more bland and less nourishing.

LOL, the less the Borg prints, the less they can get wrong- because even their basic doctrines are wrong. A case in point: the 1963 BTG book was full of maps of Babylon, and Freddy traced its history back to the mythical Tower of Babel; and the mythical Nimrod- but he had the wrong city entirely! The BTG of Revelation was of course Rome, as any Bible scholar even back in the 60's knew. The whole book was just a waste of time.

Mad Freddy sure could write! I wonder how many people went to sleep while reading his books? But lol, it makes no difference without him- as long as people attend meetings, do FS and donate money, it doesn't matter what the content of the books & mags is. Dumbing down means less time needed to write the guff, less paper wasted making the literature, and as long as the information is non-specific, there is no danger of people using the Net to check any of the 'facts' or quotes. Its the same pigfood served up again & again anyway, so what does it matter how dumb it is?

by DT ini was hoping you could help me with a little research project.. for reasons that are a little hard to explain, i'm interested in watching videos of beatles songs that are performed by anybody except the beatles themselves.
i'm especially interested in performances by people from foreign countries, (i'll provide a few examples.
) but feel free to add any other interesting videos.

Thread Envy
by snowbird intranshuman mentioned that someone on the board suffers from thread envy.. are you jealous of other posters who just seem to be able to generate responses to their threads?.
lol..
-

LOL, you crack me up snowbird! I don't worry too much about replies to my threads; but it's nice to get at least half a dozen, so I know that what is important to me is important to others too- and that I'm not a total weirdo, lol. But we are all different, and have different interests, so sometimes we just have to be unpopular.

What would be a scientific description/explanation of what God is?
by EndofMysteries inbased upon descriptions in the bible and what is known scientifically so far, what would god actually be?
lightning comes out of the throne.
no man may see and live.

A god made of pure energy would succumb to the 2nd law of thermodynamics, and burn out in the end. That's probably what happened, and why no-one's seen god for a while, lol.
