my thread was inspired by gentledawn's insightful comment about the effect the events in wales had on her jw husband.... hope any lurkers out there can filter out the signal (storys and experiences like this) to noise (the current trolls running amok on the forums) ratios.
this the problem with those who focus on outrageous fantasies about the watchtower.
it distracts from the real issues that need to be highlighted.. what happened in wales was for real.
LOL, what does it matter? A few more threads on JWN- so what? I only click on threads that interest me- maybe 5% of all new threads and ignore all the rest- and I'm sure that's pretty typical for everyone - so there is no point getting your panties in a twist... I never do.
its been about a year and a half since i started being on this site.
before i came to this site i had already blown up in my mind several of the key teachings of the org.
the final ones were their teaching on christ being the mediator only for the 144k and all it entails, they also only being in the new covenant etc.
Can't argue with that. There was a doco on TV about the Bible a couple of years ago that basically stated everything you have, but lol, I can't remember the name of it. Anyway, you will know it if you ever watch it, lol.

The Ezra verse is interesting. When Herod's temple was destroyed in 70 A.D. even the Roman army couldn't destroy it completely, and one wall, a tower, and all the foundations remained- so there should have been at least the foundations after the Babylonians destroyed 'Solomon's temple'- but as that verse shows there was nothing. Very strange, lol.
it seems to me that jw's really don't care about doctrine.
ephesians chapter 4 verse 11 "and he gave some as apostles others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry for the building up of the body of christ until we attain the unity of faith and knowledge of the son of god to mature manhood to the extent of the full stature of christ so that we may no longer be in infants tost by waves and swept along by every wind of teaching arising from human trickery from their cunning in the interest of deceitful scheming".
is it just me or does this verse totally annihilate the doctrine or belief in new light.
That is a great scripture. The WT doctrine has always been so complicated that people who join have to have faith in the GB's claim to be spirit-directed, or whatever it is they claim, as there is no way anyone would come up with those beliefs just from reading the Bible alone: and from there is it just a small step to accepting all the 'new light' as correct as well. So the actual doctrines aren't important once that dependency has been established.

i realize it's human nature to be interested in beauty, but why did they see fit to record in the so-called "word of god" the fact that some of the people they wrote about were beautiful?

Yes, the NT is much different to the OT, but the Hebrew Scriptures must have been a lot different before the Exile too, as much of it was written or rewritten at that time or just after. It's as if every time Jerusalem was destroyed the shock caused a huge change in religious thinking. Probably the ancient inhabitants of Judah had a more enjoyable life worshipping their fertility gods than the later repressed Christians did! Many beliefs changed over the time that the Bible was written- about sex, the status of women, and the afterlife etc. You can't imagine Paul writing the Song of Solomon! Ecclesiastes 3:18-22 is an example of no belief in an afterlife from a much earlier time.

Writing stories about 'beautiful people', and inserting lots of gratuitous sex & violence was considered by the ancient Jewish writers to be the best way to get their scrolls onto the bestseller list, lol. They didn't have TV and 'Dallas' back then. The OP actually shows the difference between the OT & the NT- the Jewish writers included beautiful women and lots of sex, whereas the Christian writers thought 'spiritual qualities' were beautiful, and sex was verboten. Maybe being beautiful meant a person was blessed by god? IDK...Anything is possible- the Buybull is loopy...
