  Please re-read Matthew 24:29 to the end of the chapter. There you will see that the Slave is not appointed until AFTER THE TRIBULATION, until AFTER HE ARRIVES. Has the tribulation occurred yet? Has the Christ arrived? I don't think so! In the past the Society did teach that the tribulation began in 1914, was interrupted in 1918, restarted again in 1939/40, was interrupted in 1945, and was awaiting a restarting again. Thus, they could teach that the Christ had arrived and APPOINTED THEM. But they changed their teaching of when the great tribulation started and threw out the interruption theory altogether. However, they kept the APPOINTMENT so they could keep the power. At one time, we all fell for it. NOT ANY MORE!!! This is also how they got the "great crowd of other sheep" to appear on the scene when the Revelation clearly says they make their first showing AFTER THE TRIBULATION because they are the ones that come out of it. So much for biblical scholarship.

  Anyone read William Barclay's works?

  i wandered into a "christian" book store the other day, i was out of town on business, not sure that i would do it in my own town, where i might get spotted and ratted on to the elders.. i bought a copy of one of william barclay's book, a study of john's gospel.. as i read it, i keep thinking how good it is compared with the watchtower!

  the society bangs on about the abundance of spiritual food but i find the watchtower and most other society literature shallow and unchallenging.

  i can speed read a watchtower in about 5 minutes and still keep abreast with "new light".. this guy, barclay, however really knew his stuff and was not afraid to go into detail.

  Frankly, the Society has quoted many many authors in its publications. Barclay being one of the best. For years I figured if the Society can quote them to prove their point, then I can read them. That's where the beginning of the end for me occurred. Any time any elder or publisher looked at my bookshelves at home and questioned me on them being "Christendom's authors," I just told them plainly that the Society quoted from them and that if they can quote I can read them. That shut them up real quick.

  Looking for a book for my family

  i have been looking for a book to send to my biological family.

  so far most have been about someone who was abused and therefore drawn to the organization and later disillusioned.

  i am was a third generation jw, which means that even my parents were born into it and is all they really know.

  An excellent read is a book entitled "When God Becomes a Drug." I forget the name of the author; however, this book, although not about JW's, reads as though it were. Whatever your experience this book handles it with great insight and understanding. You will learn a lot. And I do mean--a lot!

  And the reason the Society now teaches this teaching (it would be an embarrassment to change it now) is because the Society once taught that the great tribulation already occurred and that Christ returned back in 1914--WRONG! In 1969 at the Peace on Earth Convention, the Society changed the teaching that the great tribulation was now a future event not a past one. They forgot to change the "other" doctrines that relied on it. Too bad, too bad, you great city!

  The first thing you have to realize is that the appointment of a FDS is done AFTER the great tribulation and AFTER Christ's return--not BEFORE. The Society forgot that little minor point.

  Greetings Borgfree: Yes, all scripture at the time of the apostles was contained in the OT; however, not everything in the OT canon is scripture. That which is not included in what our Lord stated should not necessarily be considered "scripture." Perhaps that which was not stated by our Lord as scripture may very well be good and interesting reading (like our own history books) and have a measure of value; however, it is not inspired. Also, if you look at the history of the various books of the NT and see the "circa" or about the time of the writings in the NT, you will not that the early Christians were indeed Christians without the aid of the NT. From the time of Pentecost when the holy spirit was poured out until the writing of the first book or letter in the NT, Christians functioned quite well without the new testament canon even being in place, yes? Just something to think about.

  Incidentally, Moses did not write the Pentateuch. Moses, in the Pentateuch, is being written about by someone else. To the extent that Moses is quoted, to that extent is it the writings of Moses. Re-read the last four books of the Pentateuch and you will see clearly the distinction of who is writing and who is being written about.

  Jesus himself defines what "scripture" is. Just read Luke 24:27 and 44. Can't get any more plain and simple that our Lords defining of Scripture, yes?

  what's the most unbelievable thing you've ever heard while you were a witness?

  one thing that stands out for me is being told that i would never go thru junior or high school because the end was right around the corner.....what about you??

  The most unbelievable thing I heard was one evening at bookstudy when the conducting elder told our little assembled group how the governing body gets holy spirit. He told us (in all sincerity) that the governing body assembles in an upper room at Bethel. After prayer was said a thick cloud descended upon them all and God spoke with them telling them what to print in the Watchtower. I started laughing right there an then and he gave me this "look" so I stopped laughing. I said, No, Brother, I find that very difficult to believe. He said, No, it's true, it's true. The rest of the group was silent. I went home with wife and kids and told them the brother was crazy, lovable, but crazy. And that was the end of that.
