How do you do it?
by MrFreeze inhow do you leave the organization?
what do you say to your loved ones that you'll rarely if ever talk to again?
i want to know what some of you who have left the organization have said to parents, friends, or others close to you as you were leaving as to your reasons..

I stopped going to meetings because I had anxiety and was concerned about my health.
I told my husband that I couldn't go to meetings anymore because I don't believe it is God's organization. They started out with a cool thing, but the GB are like the Pharisees. They aren't inspired, and the Holy Spirit can't be directing them if they keep making up "new light" about the generation. I also said that I wouldn't have gotten baptized if I knew all the history beforehand...the religion wasn't what I thought it was. And I asked him if he wanted me to have a false faith...he said no.
So I burnt my bridge with him, but he no longer attends meetings, so we'll see.
As for my parents (they don't agree with shunning), I told them I still believe in God and the Bible, but told them my concerns with the religion. And told my Mom that I felt like I was lied to my whole life. (I didn't know the GB wasn't inspired until a few months ago.) It was a bit harsh, but I think they see the BS and how kids can get brainwashed and they no longer go to meetings either.

Has anyone successfully faded without moving out of the territory?

Lots of successful faders!
letsslatejws - LOL! Love your idea for holiday decorations! Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be decorating anytime soon...but perhaps I'll have a tiny Christmas tree in a few years if my hubby gets out...and make sure the curtains remain closed so we don't get in trouble. Once he's out though, I want to move so I can have carved pumpkins and Christmas lights.
Great advice about biting your tongue and keeping positive...I need to remember those points for future visits.

Wow! I'm so relieved to hear that you don't have to move away to escape. The elders here dropped by twice in 6 months, but they were easy to turn away.
Snowbird - only 2 visits in 5 years! What a lucky lady.

For Those Who Married "in the truth"
by Magwitch inhow did you meet your mate (convention, local hall)?
did you date long?
did you really have anything in common other than the same religion?
-

My husband moved into my hall and was in the same bookstudy group. I didn't pay much attention to him because he was super shy and quiet. One of my friends dated him for awhile, and we hung out in a group quite often. Eventually they broke up, and my husband called me to ask if we could still be friends. I thought that was sweet because I really liked him by then and was sad my friend beat me to him. We started dating just before he moved.
We dated for less than a year long distance, and were engaged for 5 months. I was 19 when we married, and we're still together 8 years later.
My younger sister was our chaperone. The elders freaked out if you were seen in the car together without one. But we did have lots of alone time when we "played cards" at my house.
Once we fell asleep on my bed (at opposite ends for Pete's sake) and my Mom found us the next morning. We didn't do anything, but it was quite the scandal!!! Those were the days...

question for those with husbands/wives in the borg
by Evidently Apostate inhow do you respond when they question your enlightenment?
do you find yourself holding back explaining specific doctrinal flaws or let it fly both barrels?
i know we want our loved one to see things for what they are but even a tactfull response will cause the borg teachings to take over and everything becomes an absolute with my wife.

Hey undercover, my husband is similar to your wife. He's been inactive for the past few months, but he's not mentally free. He's super smart, and loves debating anything except religion. He's come a long way in a few months, so I'm hoping he'll read CoC soon.
Love your description of the gorilla in the room, it fits perfectly!

Hi!! New Here and need to express some feelings
by Knb1983 ini'm so glad i happened to stumble across this website cause i really need to express what i've been holding inside for quite some time.
i'm 27 and was born and raised in the "truth".
i'm married and my husband was also raised as a jw, been married for almost 7 years and have two kids who have just started kindergarten and preschool.

Welcome!
My story is similar to yours...except my husband isn't out yet. I waited until I was 18 to get baptized so I could get married. My husband lost his privileges in the hall because he was dating an unbaptized publisher.
I had some doubts for quite some time, but looked into them a few months ago. There is so much information online about how this religion doesn't make sense. Once I started looking, the fear of dying at Armaggedon was gone. Have you read "Crisis of Conscience?" and "In Search of Chrisitian Freedom?" They were written by a former governing body memeber and are great!
Being raised a JW, I always felt left out because I couldn't celebrate holidays. I just had an "unbirthday" birthday party for my little boy which was lots of fun. (Only me and my sister were there, lol). And hopefully when my husband leaves, we can celebrate holidays as a family.
You have to do what's best for you and your family.
Take care!

Do you consider yourself to be quiet or outgoing?
by mrsjones5 insomething someone said on one of the popularity topics got me to wondering who on the board is quiet and who are the outgoing ones in real life.
i'm a quiet person in real life, takes me a while to warm up to folks that i just meet, but if i really like a person my rarely used gift of gab comes out.. how about ya'll?.

Like CHG, I'm really quiet, but do better one on one or in small groups.
