As you say, Richard Dawkins is very easy to understand. I found them fascinating.
Thank you!!
i don't want to hijack the other thread.. you mention the eye being better than any camera so lets discuss this.
i used to give a talk where i would use the complexity of the eye as evidence of creation, but i have since changed my mind and below is the reasoning that helped me do so.. i would welcome you comments and reasoning against this.. if you had a choice between being totally blind and being able to see things out of focus, which would you pick.. i'm sure you would, like me prefer to have out of focus vision, than no vision at all.. would you rather have vision that was out of focus and devoid of color, or be totally blind.
i'm sure you prefer the colour option.. how about if you could only see vague shapes around you or blindness?

look at the difference in height between your index and ring fingers, palm facing towards you:.
a) they are pretty much the same height.
b) the index finger is taller.
My index finger is loads higher than my ring finger.
Regarding music: before I was married I used to take my guitar with me everywhere I went and drove everyone to distraction with my Joan Baez renditions, and still can't pass a piano without bashing out a few chords.
My maths is so bad I got 0 % in a school exam once, and I have absolutely no idea what goes on under the bonnet of my car.
I guess that makes me a pink fluffy girlie girl
and what's the percentage of men/women?just a thought.
I would imagine the average age is older now than it was 20-30 years ago. The die hard older generations are mostly still trudging on, squinting and nodding at the latest publication from the GB through their clouds of cognitive dissonance until death finally takes them away from it all, while younger generations are more likely to wake up to the lie, having the internet to do private research and learn the truth behind the lie.
As for college graduates, in my experience they are as rare as hens teeth in an organisation that condemns further education, especially for born-ins!
i was virtually a born-in dub, as my mother was baptized when i was four or five; i was the bible study of two separate long-suffering brothers in my home cong before i walked out, never getting baptized.. i absorbed all the teachings of the witnesses, and always believed that the bible was in some way the word of god.
now i am re-reading living in sin, by john shelby spong.. although at the time he wrote the book he was a bishop of the episcopal church, he states that the bible, or at least the hebrew scriptures, was written by the israelites using their imaginary god to explain their victories and defeats; to provide an explanation of their history.. i had always taken it for granted the god had chosen the israelites to be his people: but maybe they chose god.. why would the creator of the universe choose an obscure tribe in the middle east, leading them back and forth across the desert and in and out of captivity, interfering with everything they did; while totally ignoring everybody else living on the earth at that time?.
a modern analogy would be god coming to earth and choosing the brooklyn dodgers as his chosen team and ignoring every other team, and coaching them so the dodgers would always win.. what sort of petty, bored, lunatic bigoted god would do that?.
Why would the Creator of the universe choose an obscure tribe in the Middle East, leading them back and forth across the desert and in and out of captivity, interfering with everything they did; while totally ignoring everybody else living on the earth at that time?
transhuman68, this makes perfect sense to me. I always used to wonder why God was so obsessed with the Middle East and surrounding areas and one tribe in particular, who always seemed to be either letting him down, or getting themselves in a right pickle.
When the Israelites were trundling about aimlessly in a desert somewhere, why on earth didn't God either chuck a map down with the manna or look to see how people in Europe or China were getting on, and maybe give them a crack at being the 'chosen people'?
a co-worker of mine whose family (2 daughters, wife) are jw's related a funny story yesterday.
his wife and daughters missed the friday portion of the convention last week in order to attend a wedding of a worldly relative.
at dinner she mentioned to him that she would go to the convention this friday to make up for the one she missed.. he then asked why and she said so she could get the information she missed.
I just asked my husband if he paid attention at conventions and he said of course not, he never listened to a thing, he only ever had one thing on his mind - to eye up the crumpet. Oh well, I hope it was all worth it cos he ended up with me
As for me, I was a bit like exwhyzee and zoned in and out with some part of my brain aborbing enough of the droning to get me through being quizzed later, waking up to clap enthusiastically when the tone of voice announced it was finally the end of yet another monotonous session so I could escape for a bit, and obviously eye up the talent.
Oooh I wish that streaker had been at one of our conventions
yesterday afternoon, the sad thought popped into my mind that, apparently, some witnesses could be made to believe anything provided it appears on the magazines.
if they said that accepting blood is now ok, many would take transfusions, and that would sort of make sense.
but if they also said that hell is a physical place after all, many would accept that, too.
It kind of leaves me the impression that, for some people, the entire faith is no more than obedience. Do as you're told. Don't question, don't think, don't allow yourself too much independence.
Maybe this is a mistaken impression. But I am sure that mere obedience is the idea that pervades the organization from top to bottom. What I mean is, all the leaders, from the governing body down, only expect everyone else to take orders. What those orders are is a secondary matter.
Your observations are spot on dgp.
It's not just sad but very, very scary. If they are told to jump, the only question they need to ask is "how high?"
Obedience without question to the GB is everything.
my knowledge of modern history might be a little thin, gained largely from the books of the wts and the "outworking of prophecy", so humour me if this is common knowledge to everyone else.. the wts has identified the characters in revelation 13 as being 1) the two horned beast = anglo american power, and 2) an image of the beast = the league of nations and later on the u.n.o.
but really it was only an image to the wild beast.. wt 1986 2/1 p6.
they did this by getting the nations to make an image to the wild beast.
Thanks for that BluesBrother. That is a fantastic find which I have bookmarked. I am frankly astounded!
Having been brought up on statements like these, I had firmly believed that the U S A had been an integral member of that League in 1919.
Yes, you and me both!!
And to everyone who already learned about this at school, I was usually staring out the classroom window with fairies dancing round in my head
something like: "would jesus do that/go there?
" i tell them: "would he own a luxurious bmw or mercendes?".
what are some quotes/expressions invented by jw's that really pissed you off?.

There will be plenty of time for a career / recreation in the New System
Why do you want to go to Art College when you can be taught by Leonardo or Michelangelo in the New System?!!!
something like: "would jesus do that/go there?
" i tell them: "would he own a luxurious bmw or mercendes?".
what are some quotes/expressions invented by jw's that really pissed you off?.
We don't do that!
The World's Christmas (what planet do they think they are living on?)
Any sentence including 'The Truth'
Overheard at the end of every meeting in any congregation: Sister A to Sister B "Wasn't that a lovely meeting, did you enjoy it?" Sister B to Sister A "Oooh yes, didn't Brother Boring give a lovely talk" -- No, the meeting was not enjoyable and Brother Boring's talk sent most of the congregation to sleep but heaven forbid that anyone would actually admit to that!!!!
Plus everything that everyone has said so far aaaaahhhhhhgggg
