  Liberal Arts

  i always thought that having a liberal atrs degree meant something "artsy fartsy".

  nothing wrong with that, i love artsy fartsy.

  however, i was mistaken.. i recently learned that having a liberal arts education comes from medival times.

  Hi:

  I am a former JW and I teach science at a liberal arts college in Wisconsin. Students (and even their parents) do not understand why a liberal arts education is so valuable. Yes, the education we provide can help students get good jobs and opens up lots of career opportunities. However, a liberal arts education is more than a Vo-tech education. Hopefully, it teaches the students how to think critically and I have to tell you that my JW background is one that I draw from on many occasions to show how valuable my own liberal arts education was in liberating me from that worldview.

  Yes, I have done Christian radio too and I am still willing to do it when invited. Lately I have been getting more invites from Catholics probably because of being Catholic. In fact, I will be on National Catholic Radio in July sometime. But a good friend of mine has a Christian radio show she is Lutheran and she still has me on from time to time.

  What happened in this case was that the members of this Catholic parish were getting visited once every couple of weeks by the local JWs so the priest asked me to come and talk about what it is like being a JW and what the differences are between what the JWs believe and what Catholics believe. And, why I became Catholic after I left the JWs.

  Anyone know? Sounds about as expensive as dialysis. BTW, yeah, bluesbrother, I did think the WT forbade removing and replacing blood.

  In general, so-called "bloodless" medicine is massively more expensive. I was speaking with a Bioethics professor a couple of weeks ago and she was presenting a case study to my class. It was about a JW who was refusing blood. To treat her the standard way with blood was going to cost about 3,000 dollars. To treat her using bloodless techniques was going to cost about 100,000 dollars. (These are U.S. dollars by the way.) So, that will give you an idea of the difference in cost.

  Hi:

  Was raised a JW since I was five years old. I pioneered for a few years and then went to Bethel.

  My wife and I left the JWs in 1996 and started attending a Lutheran Church. We eventually became Lutheran and I taught at a Lutheran College in Nebraska.

  I started reading the Early Church Fathers and books on how we got the Bible. This lead me to investigate Eastern Orthodoxy and the Catholic Church. In 2003, my wife and I entered the Catholic Church. I had to get a new job so now we live in Wisconsin and I teach at a liberal arts college here. My wife and I run a website that assists people who are interested in learning more about the teachings of the Catholic Church. We also teach classes on the faith at our Church as well.

  Hi Missanna:

  I grew up in New Orleans. That was the area where I lived when I was a JW. I used to attend the East Metairie congregation many years ago.

  I have some ex-JW friends in the area that may be able to offer some support if you ever want that.

  But I must warn you, I know what the Bible says and reasoning from the scriptures doesn't mean much to me

  Well, we do not have to talk about the Bible. I just thought I would mostly listen. Plus we can learn about God just from talking about the issues you have brought up. God is bigger than the Bible alone.

  My Mom died yesterday

  my mom passed away yesterday.

  she was a die-hard jw.

  i tried to explain why i couldn't accept certain teachings but rather than rationally consider what i had to say she chose to believe i was just "confused".

  The JW lady came back/Who really is our Mediator?

  this past tuesday the jw lady came back, which surprised me.

  she came with her husband and i told them that it wasnt really fair (one against two).

  When I was in the process of leaving the JWs, I told my JW mother that I had a problem with the JWs' teaching that Jesus is the mediator only for the 144,000 and how this contradicted 1 Timothy 2:5.

  My mother denied that the JWs ever taught this. So, I took out Watchtower after Watchtower and book after book that taught that Jesus is the mediator only for the 144,000. My mother was visibly shaken and my wife who was sitting their quietly told me that I had made my point and that we should drop it. So I did.

  This was the one and only time that any of my questions ever seemed to really get to her. My wife and I were both hopeful that this would lead to other doubts about the Watchtower for my Mom.

  Well, we were greatly disappointed.

  It turns out that my mother's congregation was having their Circuit Overseer's visit that week and that my mother talked to the Circuit Overseer about the issue.

  Well, after the CO's visit was over, my mother says to me.....

  'I talked to the CO about Jesus being our mediator. He said that technically you are correct that Jesus is the mediator only for the 144,000 but that if I want to view Jesus as my personal mediator I can.

  Then the CO told her that 'apostates only bring this stuff up to cause trouble'.

  After that she really would not talk to me about anything doctrinal issues again. (I guess I was labeled as bad association at that point.)

  Oh, well..............
