The Dawkins Delusion
by brotherdan inso, i recently finished reading "the god delusion" by richard dawkins.
i read it with a certain amount of hesitation.
after all, i am still recovering from my disappointment at realizing that the wts is not god's organization.

Child beating
by Quillsky insome posters here still attend jehovah's witness meetings.
my challenge to you is..... next time you see a parent beating a human child in public at the kingdom hall, when there are two witnesses - you and one other - call 911 or the police, and report the parent by name, for child abuse..

Yeah, WasBlind, my family called it whoopins or whuppins, too. We thought nothing of it growing up.
FTR, I definitely see good alternatives to spanking now but I would not consider my parents abusive or unloving at all. Perhaps that's why I dislike the child-abuse label being applied so liberally.

I've got a jolly old hearsay: According to my parents, there was an elderly elder many decades ago (back when there was an short intermission between public talk and WT study) who announced, "We will now have a 15 minute intercourse before the WT study." Intermission + discourse = intercourse... what better way to get the blood flowin?
Also, this wasn't on stage but we had a schitzo publisher who had a weird skin condition. She would always bring some crazy kitchen utensil to scratch her back. She like to sit near the front in the middle so us kids enjoyed a good chuckle when the spatula or spaghetti dipper came out. Never accepted an invite to dinner at her place, though.

SBC: My frustration is when people don't differentiate between hitting, beating, and spanking.
CJ: Could you please tell me how do you define them and when do you think its the best to use either one of them?
The thrust of my comment was that you cannot use those words interchangably.
- If I saw you punch your child in the face with a closed fist, I would not call it a spanking, I'd call it a hit.
- If I saw you strike them in that same manner repeatedly, I'd call it a beating not a spanking.
To me, there are MANY factors to consider before spanking a child, including but not limited to the attitude of the person delivering the discipline, the action that requires the discipline, the child's personality, age, etc... Abuse is never acceptable!
CJ, back when you used corporal punishment on your kids, did you "beat" them or "spank" them? And regardless of what you call it, do you agree that the police should've been called on you?

Scientific Method VS ????
by SweetBabyCheezits inthis was a tangent from another thread in which we were debating faith and science... psacramento (thx) rightly pointed out that i was digressing so here' s a new thread.. .
imo, it all comes down to (religious) people trying to pin an absolute answer on an unexplained event.
(ie, the first cause = creation by judeo-christian god, holy spirit coming upon someone, or a demon experience...).

hahaha..... you guys are funny.
I realize the question seems rhetorical since a widely accepted method of finding religious truth would probably result in fewer religions.
The scientific method and critical thinking are the main reasons I gravitate toward science for truth. Can anyone sell me on a religious methodology? I'll open it up to a proprietary means (since it's understood there's not a standard across the board).

The Bible is very small reason why I believe in God. LIFE is the main reason.
Would it not be more accurate to say that life may lead you to believe in intelligent design but it is the bible that leads you to believe in God with a capital G.
Otherwise, with no bible and a willingness to ignore science, why would you not just assume that the universe, earth, and life have always existed? But introduce the bible and you get a single omniscient, omnipotent, sentient being that ties up all loose ends.
Do you really think the bible is a small reason why you believe in God?

SBC: So a single pop to the rear constitutes a "beating" and "physical abuse"? That would mean I "beat" my wife occasionally when I walk into the kitchen and she's bent over getting something out of the fridge.
CJ: What a logic in your statement. you spank your wife to show her how much you want her or love her not to point out her faults.
CJ, I was exaggerating to make the point that I think people need to be careful as to how they word things. Hitting someone who pisses you off is different from sitting down and talking to a child to explain what they did wrong, then popping them on the rear with an open hand, through clothes. I was using hyperbole to make that point.
If someone saw me pop my daughter on the rear when she was little and started telling others I was BEATING or PHYSICALLY ABUSING my child, we'd have a big problem. Child abuse is abhorrent to me. My frustration is when people don't differentiate between hitting, beating, and spanking. To me, those words are not interchangeable and imply very different temperaments. The parent's attitude while administering the discipline should always be considered.
Here's my beef: This thread started out suggesting people call 911 when they see kids being "beaten" at the hall. I asked for a definition of "beating". It was equated with as little as a "pop on the rear." So that sounds like the advice is to call the police if you see someone pop their child on the rear. I'm not arguing that beatings should be okay. I'm suggesting common sense as to how we label things.
My wife and I no longer feel spankings are the most effective means to punish our daughter but even when we did, we always explained WHY she was being disciplined. But after leaving the org, we did our own thinking and research and took on a new perspective, like BD's:
My qualm with spanking is that it teaches that hitting is ok when someone does something legitimately bad. It also is not the most effective way of training.
At this point, though, I do not automatically consider child-spankers to be child abusers. Like other things in life, it is not that black and white to me.

Genesis says that God created all things ACCORDING TO THEIR KINDS.
The bible also says that the earth does NOT move and that Joshua ordered the sun to stop moving... and it did for a whole day. If you lived in the days of Copernicus or Galileo I wonder if you'd have brushed off the theory of heliocentrism.
The bible is not a means to learn science.
