Child beating
by Quillsky insome posters here still attend jehovah's witness meetings.
my challenge to you is..... next time you see a parent beating a human child in public at the kingdom hall, when there are two witnesses - you and one other - call 911 or the police, and report the parent by name, for child abuse..

So a single pop to the rear constitutes a "beating" and "physical abuse"? That would mean I "beat" my wife occasionally when I walk into the kitchen and she's bent over getting something out of the fridge.
Why is a pop to the rear ok and not a pop to the face?
Seriously? You'd be equally incensed at seeing a child popped in the face vs popped on the rear?

Yeah, I def believe it's inappropriate to spank a child because they can't sit still for two hours. We spanked our daughter in an attempt to minimize "distracting actions" at the hall. I still feel guilty about that. But, again, we weren't thinking for ourselves back then. We were following example set for us.
I'm against child beating in ANY form. When in society is it EVER ok to hit someone?
Again, please define "beating" because some seem to think it means as little as a single pop on the rear. I just want to make sure we're talking about the same thing.

some would inadvertently go to a fortune tellers door and have a demonic experience.. i was always facinated by all the stories.

I agree, PS... see my comments from earlier pages in this thread:
SBC: While I could be wrong, I'm not aware of any reputable scientists stating that the supernatural world is impossible. Improbable, yes, but not impossible. Even Richard Dawkins writes in such a way as to leave an opening for evidence contrary to his current belief, should it ever be presented. (ie, Why There Almost Certainly Is No God)...
SBC: ..."Open-mindedness means that we will acknowledge the possibility that new evidence could in the future lead us to change our minds. But it doesn't preclude our drawing reasonable conclusions in the present."
But I also have to ask because I really don't know: based on your last post, were prominent members of the scientific community stating that human flight and manned space exploration were impossibilities or was it the non- scientific community , such as a person today who says evolution is just a stupid theory? Or a combination of both?

How do you define "beating"? I'm not questioning a smack to the face or torso and such, but where's the line between spanking and beating? My parents spanked me on the butt as a kid, many times with a belt, but I would NEVER consider them abusive. We had a great relationship. I felt very much loved my whole childhood. I wasn't afraid of them but I sure didn't want a whoopin, as we call it down south. Never felt like they were doing it to make themselves feel better or let off steam.
If someone had called social services and it caused me to be removed from my home, I would be devastated and angry at the person who called. So at what point do you think someone should call 911 on a parent?
I'll admit my wife and I started out hand-spanking our child because that's how we were raised. (And yeah my kid would scream about having to go outside at the hall. She also screamed when we'd take something away from her. Kids do that as toddlers.) After leaving the org and doing our own research we decided that wasn't a means of punishment we wanted to use on our daughter. So we stopped.
My point is I think some folks were actually abused by their parents and wonder if they view all spanking parents the same way. I don't think that should be the case. While I see other forms of punishment as being more effective without the risk of hurting the child's self esteem, my parents were not critical thinkers. They didn't analyze other possibilities like we do. But I never felt unloved as a child and I don't think my self-confidence was crushed from spankings. And I certainly hope my daughter doesn't grow up thinking we physically abused her when she was little.

Scientific Method VS ????
by SweetBabyCheezits inthis was a tangent from another thread in which we were debating faith and science... psacramento (thx) rightly pointed out that i was digressing so here' s a new thread.. .
imo, it all comes down to (religious) people trying to pin an absolute answer on an unexplained event.
(ie, the first cause = creation by judeo-christian god, holy spirit coming upon someone, or a demon experience...).

The superstitious and/or religious will quickly attribute the unexplained to a spirit being(s).
Science will search for the answers but if none bear evidence, the unexplained simply remains unexplained... until a theory passes through the scientific method meat grinder and comes out the other side intact.
The scientific method is well-established and documented. What consistent method of reasoning and testing is used by the vast majority of the religious community to show how they arrive at their conclusions (doctrine)?

The Dawkins Delusion
by brotherdan inso, i recently finished reading "the god delusion" by richard dawkins.
i read it with a certain amount of hesitation.
after all, i am still recovering from my disappointment at realizing that the wts is not god's organization.

LWT: I'm content with a whopping "I Don't Know and Will Die Not Knowing", I just don't have any motivation to assign any possible answer to the mystery
for that statement.

It was not staged and those involved believed it to be real.
To quote JD, that's usually what it takes.

I'm certainly not debating that any of you had an experience you couldn't explain.
