Wobble: The first thing the Bible did wrong was to Anthropomorphise the Supreme Being, if one were to exist, no description in human terms would suffice.
The Bible: Effing the ineffable for over two millennia.

Welcome to the forum!
In a way, this is kind of what Genesis is and Collosians. It's an example but maybe makes sense and helps you see where I'm confused?
Just my 2 cents: When you read the Bible as if it was a book of divinely inspired truths, it can be very confusing. But if you re-read the Bible without that presupposition, you'll probably reach the conclusion it was cobbled together by ancient man, a mix of historical people/places and religious mythology, as a means of control and, later, reform. Once you sort that out, the cognitive dissonance will go away.

Evil Spirits
by LizLA indoes anyone on this forum have knowledge about casting out demons or evil spirits?
there's at least two of them that have been harrasing me even before i was a jw.
i recently attended a deliverance church to find some help but it was apparent that the holy spirit was missing from that church.

^ As far as I can tell, evil spirits are just as dependent on human faith as good spirits. If you lack belief, both groups get offended and ignore you.
Also, if my sources are correct - specifically Elf, starring Will Ferrell - Santa's flying sleigh operates on Christmas spirit. That's right, even Santa depends on human faith.

Well, I figured my initial survey would throw a red flag since it’s no secret I dislike organized religion (and especially fundy Christianity since it influences life here in the southern US so much). But I'd hoped to get some real input without triggering defense mechanisms so… no, I wasn’t going to elaborate… yet neither did I make up a false reason for my questions so as to mislead anyone. If that’s "taboo" then call me Howard Stern.
I was curious if any Christians on JWN - specifically those who believe in a literal eternal hellfire - felt that the Judge needed to be removed from his position (as he lacked a real sense of justice in dealing with his daughter) and/or if he should burn in hell. I was wondering if we had any Christians who felt like some of these commenters from Youtube:"These parents are a f--king waste of space and do not deserve to be breathing our air even living. I hope these parents burn in hell and are whipped every f--king second of their miserable time in hell."
"Judge William Adams is not fit to be anywhere near the law system if he can’t even exercise fit judgment as a parent himself."As a nonChristian, I think this guy deserves to get the shit kicked out of him. But that goes for ANY parent who beats their child like this guy. Yet Christians who believe in a literal hell would insist that we have an omni-benevolent father (and judge) who is morally justified punishing His ‘children’ in infinitely worse ways than Judge Adams could even imagine. Condemn the earthly father who intentionally hurts his children to punish them... while praising a supposed heavenly father who tortures his children eternally to punish them...
There are more parallels but for those who don't believe in a burning eternal hell, this is all moot, anyways, so I'll let it get buried.Peace, ye olde people of JWN.

Shelby: Ever wonder how many people thought the earth was flat... because "science" said so? (And it did, if we're talking what was discernable to the senses... and absent a boat.)
Uh-oh - we're assigning arbitrary meaning to the word "science" now. Science is a well-defined method of discovery, not just whatever is "discernable to the senses." And using scientific principles, Eratosthenes of Cyrene was able to closely estimate the circumference of our spherical earth as far back as the third century BC.... without ever leaving Egypt.
"Science, at bottom, is really anti-intellectual. It always distrusts pure reason, and demands the production of objective fact." - Mencken

WT Mar 15th 2012 - 144,000 no longer a literal number?
by dozy inreading idly through this magazine , i read the study article "rejoicing in our hope" which discusses the two "hopes" according to the wtbts ie heaven & earth.. a couple of points were of interest:.
(1) absolutely no mention at all of the 144,000 or rev 14. usually an article like this would be filled with references , but it isn't even mentioned.
it does discuss the "limited number" , but only in contrast with the "no man can number" great crowd.. (2) a much more laid back attitude towards the two hopes.

Wow, great catch, dozy! I suspect this is part of the gradual weaning process. I told my parents (before I was DF'd) that the doctrine of a literal 144,000 anointed would have to be dropped eventually. I'm wondering if I put that in an email - I'd love to FWD it to my brother when the time is right.
