There was some interesting research that was reported on the genetic links to obesity. But the media are always reporting on links between the brain and behavior (and often do so poorly). There are thousands of studies published each year that relate to the field of neuroscience.

My daughter asks about the Bible
by laverite inmy 9 year old asked me yesterday about the bible.
some of her friends in school last year spent a lot of time talking about hell and it really scared her.
i dealt with it with her, so she is reassured and comforted and realizes she doesn't need to worry about going to hell.

My 9 year old asked me yesterday about the Bible. Some of her friends in school last year spent a lot of time talking about Hell and it really scared her. I dealt with it with her, so she is reassured and comforted and realizes she doesn't need to worry about going to Hell. But interestingly, these kids also talk about having Bibles at home and reading the Bible. We don't have a Bible anywhere in our house. So she asked about why that is and if could get one to read.
All I could do was answer her honestly, and say that I didn't think it was a book that would appropriate for little kids to read. She asked why, and I said there are so many bad things in the Bible that are very frightening, especially for children. I let her know that there are things just too inappropriate for kids to read, and that I wasn't going to buy one.
She said "ok" and left it at that. She comes up with lots of questions out of the blue that I never anticipate ahead of time!

I had to control my laughter...
by ILoveTTATT intoday at the meeting, during the prayer (to which i did not say "amen" to) the brother said "thank you for everything the faithful and discreet slave do for us.
we know it is because they love us...".
to which i had to really control my laughter cause i was about to burst out laughing... i just smiled, thankfully everyone else had their eyes closed and head down.... .

Wouldn't it be funny for someone to start busting out laughing when something so ridiculous is said in a talk or a prayer? I'd pay to see that.

Bless her heart. I dearly hope she has been able to heal from what was done to her. Thank goodness she has spoken up. What a brave inspiration she is. Please let this inspire others to speak out, too.

Baffling comment by my JW parents about non-witness funeral
by joyfulfader inmy parents attended the funeral of an elderly family member today.
being out of state i was unable to attend.
i asked how it went and was told that "worldly" people don't care enough about anyone to mention anything personal.

Babylon the Great, the Great Trib, etc.
by laverite inthinking about topics such as babylon the great, the great tribulation and the kinds of things would scare the living bageezus out of me as a child, i took a walk down memory lane.

everything terrified me.

Thinking about topics such as Babylon the Great, the Great Tribulation and the kinds of things would scare the living bageezus out of me as a child, I took a walk down memory lane. And let's be very clear here... I was utterly terrified as a child growing up as a JW. Everything terrified me. The slightest rumble of thunder, or a car backfiring would send my heart into my throat, as I was sure that Armageddon was about to start any second and I risked possible death because how could I know if I was righteous enough? I had stomach problems, anxiety and would shake at the thought. I would shiver in bed out of sheer terror. I lived in constant fear. The vivid imagery in the publications, the stories that were told and retold, the talks and discussions afterward...No child should be brought up like that.
With this trip down memory lane, it got me to thinking about the future of Watchtower Corp. But again, to think about the future, one must also think about the past. Many dates have come and gone. Watchtower has a 100% failure rate. Everything they get wrong, they simply reinvent by labelling it "new light." 1914 happened invisibly. So what about new possible interpretations of events previously discussed regarding Babylon and the Great Trib?
They are mostly a one trick pony -- the end of the world is upon us. It's closer than your eyelids. Keep vigilant. If things become tougher for them financially and if their tight hold on members continues to loosen, wouldn't it make sense to reinvent new light? Possible candidates include Babylon the Great and the Great Trib.
Could the fall of Babylon the Great be reinterpreted in line with social science data indicating people are becoming less religious? People are increasingly "losing their religion" so there are potential possibilities there.
And the Great Trib. Could that be Watchtower Corp being persecuted by more and more lawsuits and "attacks" by secular authorities?
With Babylon the Great "falling" and Watchtower under "seige" (lawsuits from abuse victims, etc.), this would surely mean Armageddon is truly just about to be upon us (yes, yes, always coming, never arriving...but still).
Obviously these ideas are speculative. However, there are so many ways Watchtower Corp's leadership could rev things up to create a sense of exciting new light, greater urgency and greater activity amongst Watchtower's followers.
Watchtower Corp is an "end of the world" one trick pony, but they have many possibible escape routes for some time.

I agree with virgochik. My first thought was how awful that there's yet another victim (who knows how many silent victims there are!), but thank goodness this is someone who is speaking up and telling the world what happened. Watchtower Corp has so very much to answer for. I hope that they are increasingly hit where it really hurts -- their bank accounts.

We're Jehovah's Witnesses Witnesses
by laverite inwhat i value most about jwn is that this site, with the massive numbers of posts and experiences shared here, is a very strong public world-wide witness on the impact of the watchtower publishing corporation has on the lives of jehovah's witnesses (both current and former).. the countless lived experiences shared here stand as a public record of first hand experiences.
in sharing our experiences, we witness to others about our (former) religion.
rather than espousing the truthtm, we speak to the real truth about the truthtm.
