When I was a teenager I went rummaging around the ruins of my Great Grandmothers thatched cottage on a very remote island in the West of Ireland which was last occupied during the potato fammine in 1845. The surviving family built a large Georgan style house on the same property which was where my Mother was born and raised. Anyway, I found an antique pewter lantern and also a silver broach that was made in a old Celtic dedign which had "St Vincent's Hospital 1827 " beautifully worked into the design. Apparently one of my great grandmothers sisters had been a nurse there. They let me keep both of these items and I still have them. I got detained in London on the way home because not thinking....I had put them in my carry on luggage and when they X-rayed my bag and saw a cylinder shaped metal object( the lantern) they called out the brigade.
Anyway, this thread has made me remember that I've always meant to contact St Vincents Hospital (if it still exists) and see what they know about this broach. It could turn out to be the most valuable piece of jewlry I own.

I think many can relate to this thread. My wife and I sure can. It seems that anyone who spent their growing up years or young adult years in the organization are the worst off in terms of not having a network of friends or family in place to ease their transition out of the organization or the skills needed obatain such relationships. Spoiled you might say we were, as there wasn't any real skill involved in obtaining friends before. The playing field was pretty much level, you automatically knew what everyone was about basically. All you needed was to "click" with a few of the different ones in each of the halls you were aquainted with and your dance card was full. Some called this unity but really it was just a fortunate side benifit that occured, much like it does in school or at summer camp or where people gather regularly for whatever reason for a long period of time. It's natural that after being part of a crowd of 200 or so, you would find a few that hit it off and became friends. I think the reason so many who do leave but eventually return, is not because of a love of any TRUTH, or is it God's holy spirit drawing them back, rather they crave the familiar and what comes easy and that old feeling of belonging somewhere.
When I feel this way, I realize that going back would mean that just like before, I'd have to sit through hours and hours, years and years of listening to the same information over and over and be expected to use certain terms and keep my own honest comments and real thoughts in check at all times. It would be exausting now to have to go back to that, just to be able to chat with a few friends after the meeting. I know if I invested the same amount of time and effort that I once spent at meetings, instead seeking out new friends, I'd find them. It would be a lot of work, but I'd also be free to be myself without having to attend conventions and go from door to door for the rest of my life. The problem for me is that as a Witness, everything we were, was provided for us. The meeting topics, the songs, all of our deepest beliefs and attitudes towards things were programmed into us. We had no political opinions, didn't read or discuss anything controversial, we just assumed who we were from someone else in a way. Now we're out there on our own and having to rethink everything and learn how to find things in common with others when it isn't always obvious. I spent so much time basically saying NO to life that I am lacking in many of the skills common to someone my age. It's a strange thing to meet someone new and not have a real life story you can tell them...one they could relate to in any way. Most of the time when you meet someone, they introduce you to their circle of friends. It's a very odd thing not to have anyone at all in your life...no history with anyone. This in itself should be proof enough that one was in a closed society or even a cult. Going back would be just more of the same.

When do you think the org reached peak numbers?
by Mickey mouse ini'm talking real numbers here, not the stuff they publish which is skewed by allowing people to count 15 minutes/both parents counting study time with children.
when did they reach their peak publishers?.
my guess would be the early 2000's.

Terrible Analogy at a Convention
by ApostateDance ini'd love to know what you guys think of this.
brother jackson (from the governing body) had this "neat" analogy at the very end of the convention.
he said; "what if you were watching a football game on tv, and it was the trojans against the fighting irish, and it's been a good game.

I've heard of football players making touchdowns for the opposing team because they didn't realize they were running in the wrong direction. Perhaps it's not always a bad idea to raise ones head up and take a look around.

I really can understand someone staying associated so as to remain in contact with ones network of friends and family members. It's a heavy price one pays for leaving. I can't however imagine what kind of mindset I'd have to develop to bring myself to the point of going from door to door honestly recommending this way of life to anyone else. Or even being able to comment honestly at the meetings. If you weren't actively involved in the congregations activities, you'd have to endure the constant "encouragement" to make comments at the meetings and join the strong ones in the field service. You'd either have to join in or be treated as a weak one, or as suspect even. I know several Witnesses who are in it because they don't have anywhere else to go. I know one long time regular pioneer who has chosen to ignore the "Generation" teaching and continues full time to draw people to an organization whos teachings she doesn't completly understand anymore. There are many who are going through the motions and it doesn't really matter what is taught from the platform. This is their way of life...a content little routine where they have pat answers provided for them on any topic and they'd cling to that at any expense rather than go it on their own.
I'd say you are in good company if you continue to stick with it because of the ill concequnces you'd suffer by leaving. If you can find a way to make it work for you and you can work out the internal struggle that will surely result....go for it, but you'll have to leave off visiting this site for sure.

I have a question on the Circuit Accounts Scam thread
by gubberningbody ini didn't want it to get buried and i'd really like to know.. so i knew pretty much what he was saying was true, but what i don't get is how the creative accounting works.. i mean you have to show expenses on the ledger - and i mean real expenses, like the co/do expenses along with receipts.. you have actual costs for the power coming into the building.
the paper supplies and cleaning supplies.
the vacuum cleaners and mops and other sundry items, and you have to have receipts for all that.. i also know that when you made a "donation" it was off the books at the circuit level as far as accounts were concerned.. but how is money not being accounted for?.

I'm sure the WT has their behinds covered as far as tax and accounting laws. I think the scam part of it is "in house" when they "indicate" to the flock, who unquestioningly trusts them, that they'll need to dig even deeper into their pockets because the money needed to cover the assembly expenses hasn't been met. It would be a different story if they said up front that the assembly costs are X but we need XX to send to the society. That would be honest but they'd bring less in because the urgency wouldn't be there. Instead, they present it as an overall deficit which causes alarm and plays on the emotions of fear and sense of loyalty. Later , they make it look like Jehovah's spirit is at work when they have a surplus to send to the society. Everyone applauds and goes home feeling warm and fuzzy.
Can you imagine going to the accounts department during the assembly intermission and asking to review the books? Especially a sister, it would be unheard of. It's our own fault as much as it is theirs, for not asking questions...just blindly trusting....but that's what cult members do best.

Couldn't help but notice that they didn't address any specific point or issue that a supposed apostate might be teaching. They also don't mention how they had their followers spend decades blanketing the globe with literature containing incorrect prophesies, miscalculation of dates and teachings that were later reversed, all of which were false teachings apparently.
They accuse the churches of being of the Devil because of their false teachings. When they JW's get it wrong, they gloss over it or ignore it altogether.
For me, their own words/deeds turned me away...not apostates.
