Funny....I was just thinking about District Assemblies yesterday, how they've changed and what value would they serve these days. It seemed like in the past they had days and days worth of things to harp on about and information that was oh so important for us not to miss. Granted, the assemblies were torture sessions but they seemed to rally a sort of special spirit of commaraderie in spite of it all. The last District Assembly I was at was in a Major Sprots Arena. It seemed so sterile and cold and it was a ghost town by comparrison to the old days. People seemed to mill around, come and go, pick and choose what sessions they would and wouldn't attend. This wouldn't have flown in a couple of decades ago. With the deleted meetings, reduced hours, downsized magazines, and internet access to their information they don't have enough new information to fill a program. Most of the benefit of the assembly didn't come from the talks. it was just seeing that you weren't the lone religous fanatic out there that made it seem ok to press on. It seems like they are going to streamline and homogonize themselves right out of existence if they are not careful. Can you imagine how hard it will be for single JW's to meet a variety of people without the being able to cruise the corridors of the big District Conventions. It was the only thing that we used to have to look forward to.

Mormons in decline because of the Internet
by slimboyfat ininteresting article.
i've often thought empirically mormons have an even harder sell than jws.
the watchtower merely falsifies the date of the fall of jerusalem.

I see Mormon boys around quite often. I feel sorry for them having been in a similar situation as a youth as they are now. The ones I've known seem very decent and well meaning. My Boys were the best of friends with two Mormon brothers they knew from school...I loved those two boys...they were terrific and I preferred them to the choice of sneaky Witness kids my boys had to associate with. Two Mormon Boys came to my door about two weeks ago. I told them my JW story and said I no longer trust religion or religious people because of how hoodwinked I was for a good part of my life. They both looked from one to the other as if they knew exactly what I was talking about and as if they had had this conversation among themselves.
Later in our conversation we talked about the Mormon Ad capaign on TV and billboards that show happy good looking people from all walks of life who claim to be Mormon. They said that many Mormons are quite unhappy with the ads. because it is obvious propaganda and it embarrasses them.

Why doesn't the WT close the religion?
by Aussie Oz ini was pondering the other day, why the watchtower corporation doesn't just sell off all the kingdom halls and hang the jws out to dry seeing they make far more $$$ from business than peddling the religion these days.. then it dawned on me... they need to keep that little sideline going for the tax breaks!.
slow learner i guess.. oz .

djeggnog,
If you are sure it's ok with the organization you support, for you to be here, just mention to your Elders that you frequent this site, have them look it up and read your all posts and all the others here as well. You'll soon find out that, "bible based conscience" or not, they will expect you to desist from this practice...or else. You can exercise your "bible based conscience" but you'll have to keep it a secret from them.
Bible Based Conscience, is a JW term....not one of your own origin. You learned the term in one of their publications, not in the Bible. It means basing your actions on the Watchtower Society's interpretation of the Bible rather than on your own understanding of Gods word. They believe they are free to restrict your activities in the Congregation or punish you if you don't exercise your conscience their way.
The G.B members and many Bethelites are JW's who grew up in this religion and are deeply entrenched in this way of life. They have reached the pinacle of JW hood. They have nowhere else to go. They are riding along on a machine that was started a hundered ago and like most JW's , desperatly cling to the hope that they won't grow old and die. So far, generations of them have gone to their graves wondering what happened.

It's the one vice they are allowed so many don't miss an opportunity to imbibe.
Saw lots of it in Bethel. Knew a few JW's who wound up in AA but only after they left the TRUTH and got rid of the shame and gott help.

I don't doubt that it is true that students resort to such tactics to pay for thier education. It's just that they always dredge up every rotten thing they can to show that higher education is a bad scary thing. They want JW's to get their education reading their magazines and will use every tactic they can to scare them off from advancing beyond that.
When I was in Bethel, I worked in the hot sweaty bindery with a guy that became a JW just after he got out of College. He got chosen to work in the Law Offices because of his previous education while the rest of us who followed their advice and went to Bethel instead of College were overlooked. He was then sent to Law School.

It's called. "only print information that confirms our foregone conclusions."
A study showing that 1 in 3 college students reads the bible daily would never even be mentioned in the Awake.

It seems like a lot of the things we do for our kids as far as helping them once they are older, is done to ease our own discomfort or even guilt while seeing them make their way in the world.
