  Jws and urban myths!

  jws sure love urban myths.

  the jws have their own collection built up over many years, part of their own unique worldwide jw culture.

  i've come across the same ones in america that i've heard in australia, and they pass from legend to myth and finally reality as quoted from the platform.

  I heard one tale of a burglar who broke into a home, only to have the owner come home, he hid under the bed and so heard her read the bible. He escaped, taking her bible with him. Eventually he starts a study and gets baptized! I can't believe I was gullible enough to believe that one.

  And as if that wasn't enough, he hears her say her nightly prayers and steals the bible and sneaks out when she's asleep. He studies, gets baptized and recognizes the woman at a District Assembly and identifies himself to her and returns the stolen Bible. Instead of freaking out, the woman embraces him as she would a brother and the whole audience breaks into tearful applause.

  Another Pet Peeve About District Conventions

  well,i haven't been to a convention since i started posting here.

  but,since my family is attending one soon,i was having flashbacks.. one of the many things that would irritate me would be running into old, so-called friends.

  these are ones that while in the same congregation we were close,but then,once they moved,nothing.. and it's usually them just still living five minutes away,but since they go to another hall and can't be bothered now.

  I have never felt more lonely that sitting by myself through a convention. It was good though, because I started to see the religion for what it was.

  You find out what you are made of or what is really important to you when you are alone in a crowd. One of the hardest things for some people to do is to sit by themselves in a restaurant or go to a movie alone. Some adults have never done this. I think if every JW attended an entire assembly alone in a place where they knew no one, they wouldn't be distracted by the social niceties and would pay more attention to what is really being said. They'd be able to examine their true motives for being part of this religion and determine if they are part of it based on the merit of it's doctrines and teachings or because they are going along with the peer group they happened to be part of. If you are sitting in a auditorium full of strangers you are able to be far more objective about the program than you are when you are surrounded by individuals you know well and have social or emotional bonds with. There is a group mentality at assemblies that is nice in a way but when thousands of people are clapping their hands in approval of something that was just said but three quarters of them weren't even listening, it's a little scary.

  "The END is soooooo close"

  i notice reported in a number of posts that this seems to a bit of a mantra with the dubbies now, more so than ever in the past.. is this because they are getting desperate for the life they live as jw's to change ?

  they don't really want to end their days with the constant drudgery of the jw life still going on, they want something different, but must "wait on jehovah".

  sigh.. i wonder if this is a small opportunity for us to sow some small, niggling doubt, why not ask, when they spew out the "it is soooo close" nonsense:.

  I'd rather live this life to the full than waste time wishin' , and waitin' on another Life is a gift. It's foolish not to appreciate this one then look for another

  Spending the life you were given waiting for the New System to arrive is basically like keeping your eyes shut through a movie you really wanted to see, in the hopes that the Theatre Manager will give you your money back at the end.

  My wife's Uncle is in his high 70's, I've known him for decades. A nice guy (elder) but he always sounds so exhausted by life. You can never get through a conversation with him without him saying at least once in a sad tone "Boy....we sure do need the new system, don't we ? I tell ya, it can't be much longer now" Sometimes we time him to see how long it takes for him to utter this montra. I usually bite my tounge but sometimes I want to say, "but what ever will you have to talk about " or "Either we need the new system or maybe we need to not expect life to be so perfect".

  JW Grammar is...

  *we are all from different cultural and educational backgrounds, we all experience different circumstances in life, and i don't mean to offend anyone on this forum in any way.*.

  with that said here are my observations, and i want to know what you have observed.. in my experience i have noticed a trend: zealous witnessestend to exhibit the worst grammar when compared to non-witnesses!.

  i want you to think back, or check it out for yourself if you haven't noticed it.. on social networks: compare comments on anything by jws (especially the uber-zealous ones) with those of your atheist or other religiously affiliated friends.

  I have to chuckle all these posts about poor grammer that contain gramatical, punctuation, typing and spelling errors.

  (Including some of my own. LOL) On another note, I once heard a brother give a talk where he referred to the arrogant religious leaders of Jesus day as having a certain self sat-is-fa-cation about themselves. This totally blew his credibility.

  i made an effort to plow thru the latest bullsh*t from the wts in regard to the faithful slave, etc.

  i must admit that, their latest set of interpretations make more sense than formerly.

  they seem to have done away with 4-6 different 'comings' of jesus and they pretty much stuck everything in the future, so they are off the hook in the present.

  Birthdays and hunting

  supposedly the reason jw's claim that celebrating birthdays is displeasing to god is because the bible mentions a pagan birthday celebation where john the baptist was beheaded.

  if that's reason enough to ban birthday celebrations forever, then i'm suprised they didn't ban hunting since pagan nimrod was named in the bible as a hunter in opposition to jehovah who hunted for sport.

  most hunters i know enjoy the meat they bring home of course, but mostly they hunt because they simply love to do it.

  Actually, I knew a lot of JWs who thought it was wrong to hunt. But we are talking about city people.

  Thankfully the were able to decide this for themselves rather than have a direct ban on hunting, from the society like they did with birthdays.

Most hunters I know enjoy the meat they bring home of course, but mostly they hunt because they simply love to do it. It would be less time consuming and expensive (equipment, guns, hunting license etc,) for them in most cases to simply buy the meat they need or raise a few chickens etc. But hunting is a tradition and a way of life for some. Can you imagine what would have happened if the society,based on the same biblical logic as banning Birthdays, way back in the day, would have banned hunting and told JW's they could only eat meat they had purchased or had been raised for consumption? Even though it's the same skewed logic, they'd never have dared to mess with hunters. Likely many of the early fouders of the religion were hunters themselves. This is not an argument for or against hunting rather another way to show why some of the beliefs that JW's are proud to say sets them apart from mainstream Christianity, are illogcical.

  Circuit Overseer's Talk: " We need 5 meetings a week and weekly mags"

  at the circuit overseer's talk last week he made the comment that some "of the friends" are finding it difficult to move ahead with jehovah's organization (tm).

  the co said that a few had asked, "is it necessary to have 5 meetings a week, and a magazine every other week?".

  "couldn't we do without one meeting a week, and have monthly editions of the watchtower?

  Yes it is a funny thread "Wha Happened". Aren't they always mentioning that scripture in Hebrews 10:25 that says " Do not forsake the gathering of your selves together but do it all the more so as you behold the day drawing near" Now that we're really close to the end, instead of adding another opportunity to gather together, they drop the bookstudy. That meeting at one time, was considered the most important of them all. During the Trubulation we were going to meet at our bookstudy groups "underground" style. They even changed the name of it to "rendezvous" because we were going to have to be really secretive about it.

  Such a joke....all those people I used to know, fell for this stuff hook line and sinker.
