OK, this is going to date me (date my parents, actually), but does anyone know who Nelson Eddy was? He was a huge screen idol in the 30s (http://www.nelsoneddy.com), along with his singing partner, Jeanette McDonald. My parents were big fans. We have a tape, which Alan's parents gave us, of Nelson Eddy singing Kingdom Melodies. It's definitely him (his voice is easily recognizable), and since he studied with the Witnesses at one time, it's not a surprise (my mom lived in LA at the time and knew which congregation he briefly attended). On the other side of the tape is our hero Freddie Franz singing Kingdom Melodies. The man apparently thought he had quite the voice (what an egomaniac!), but my only reaction when I first heard it was a huge shudder. Yuck.

US evangelist preacher admits battle with 'dark side'
by jstalin ini think the saddest part of this whole situation is that rev.
haggard is only going to perpetuate the hate and intolerance of homosexuality amongst the evangelicals he used to represent.
one important quote from him:.

I don't feel sorry for him. He admittedly knew he was gay his entire adult life, yet he married a woman and had children and took his hypocrisy to new heights by becoming an evangelical preacher and railing against gay marriage. The hypocrisy is staggering. And, when he was outed, he lied about it, compounding his dishonesty. It's one thing to live a lie, but he should have known enough to keep his big mouth shut. There's nothing sinful about being gay, and it was obviously something he had no control over. But he *could* control his public hypocrisy. I knew so many dubs like this; it's always the most self-righteous ones who have the biggest skeletons in their closets.

We saw it last night. I've never laughed so hard in my entire life. Nonstop laugher (intersperced with groans) for two full hours. At one point I thought I was going to have a heart attack because I was laughing so hard I couldn't catch my breath. It's very, VERY crude in spots, but it's hysterical.

I had two very bad experiences, both of which happened when I was a child (9 to 10 years old). In the first, I was working door-to-door with another little girl my age, and someone shot at us. I felt the bullet (or pellet or whatever it was) whiz past my face. I never found out what kind of gun it was (it might have just been a pellet gun), but it was really frightening. In the second, my family and a couple of other cargroups were working unassigned territory. I was with an elderly brother. The householder, a huge man, was really furious about us coming onto his property. He started yelling at us as soon as he opened the door. The brother was very calm and said we would leave, but as we turned to walk down the five or six steps from the porch to the sidewalk, the householder kicked him and sent him rolling down the stairs. Then he threatened us and told us that if we went to any other houses in town, he was going to come after us. I remember that we went to the sheriff's office and filed a complaint, but I don't know what happened afterward. Needless to say, I really disliked service. By the time I was in my early 20s, I stopped going, even though I was an "active" Witness for another 10 years.

We used to live in Beaverton, but moved out of the area in 1998. My son still lives in Portland, though, and I spend a couple of weeks out there every year. I miss Oregon!
