BRITS v YANKS

this is just for laughs, but let's be honest us brits are most definately ahead of our 'cousins' across the water in the credibility stakes.. i'll kick us off and see where we go;.

Great debate but the answer is obvious. The USA is the best and the reason is that we import the best from all over the world. In fact, it seems that more people want to relocate to the States than anywhere in the world. One look at the immigration situation here should deter any argument. So while it may seem arrogant to claim the USA "the best" it might make the claim more palatable to others (read: losers ;-) ) if we are willing to admit it is thanks to the people of all lands, who came and contributed, that have made it so.

And as far as military success, while it's true we aren't batting 1000, does anyone really consider us "inferior"?

This country is great and if you don't believe me just watch and see how quickly we recover after we get rid of Bush & Co.

And if you are reading this Joelbear, very funny top 5.

The "Ransom Sacrifice" short version.

in the christian part of the world not many of us have escaped the much hyped and published sacrifice christ supposedly made when the romans executed him.. i myself was going around for years parroting this strange concept without giving it much thought.

thinking and faith some times do not mix very well.. anyway, apparently god made a royal blunder when he created the first humans and they plunged mankind into death and despair first crack out of the box, while god stood by and watched helplessly.

then we are told that god for this reason, in his infinite wisdom took mankind for ransom for thousands of years.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate that you had many to answer and probably have other things to do too.

:The law in Lecviticus you refer to was speaking of a living brother's wife, not a dead brother's wife. (Lev.18:16) The fact is, the Jewish law required an unmarried brother to marry his deceased brother's wife if she was childless, and if she demanded that he do so.

I have to smile at this. Henry VIII used this scripture to base his suit of divorce from Katherine of Aragon on. Katherine had been married to Henry's older brother Arthur, who died. After being unable to produce a son Henry was certain this marriage was incestuous and was the reason God would not send him the longed for male heir. This scripture proves it, he insisted. He sent this argument to every theologin in Europe, even those wretched Lutherans ;-) (he was desperate). Many agreed, except of course the pope who was being held hostage by Katherine's nephew at the time, leaving him in a delicate position indeed. Hence the schism.

If it weren't for that rule in Leviticus England might be Catholic today. Just an interesting and useless detail for you.

You said something that I son't understand.

:God cannot act unrighteously.

As I am sure you know there is a great deal of unrighteousness in the bible, especially the OT. God apparently didn't have a problem with "his people" slaughtering entire races, in fact wasn't this sort of thing greatly rewarded? Or how about the guy who was told by his father to go and impregnate his dead brother's wife? The brother didn't think this was too kosher so he pulled out of the deal at the last minute. Maybe he was just following the law in Leviticus about not laying with your brother's wife. Apparently that rule is only a "sometimes" rule because, according to the bible, God struck this poor guy dead for not making his brother's wife pregnant.

And finally, I would like to think that a righteous God would love all people at all times. During OT times he seemed to rather hate everyone of his children except of course the Israelites.

I know humans who are much more righteous than the God the bible portrays. If what you say is true, that God cannot act unrighteously, than this simply adds credibilty to the argument that the bible is not God's word.

do you believe in reincarnation?.

i dont think i believe in it in the same way that most believers do, which is that we keep coming back in different fleshly bodies until we have achieved perfection.. i do, however, strongly suspect that we may well be spirit creatures who find it necessary to inhabit a fleshly body from time to time, and that this entails us having to leave behind most of our past memories.. i say most memories, because many people seem to have some vestigal recollections that don`t seem to fit in with earthly experiences.. i`m pretty sure that i chose my parents!

i have a recollection of being shown a young and kind couple through some form of astral telescope and choosing to become their son.

Interesting thoughts E-man. I have given a lot of thought to such things. I think we all have "vision" or at least the capability. I've had many, many glimpses of future events--most trivial and occuring soon after the "glimpse" but I marvel at it just the same. Some people have very high awareness and some do not. I know people that I swear are way too above the fray to not have been through before and then there are those that it is so obvious this is their first time through. :-)

Perhaps we do go through more than once and if this is so we probably do choose what we are born into. I think this would apply even to those with wretched childhoods as going through life more than once could only be for one purpose. To learn it all.

I have one distinct memory from childhood of telling my mom about when "I used to be grown up". I can still recall the image that came to my mind at that time of me as a grown-up and it is nothing like how I look now but it was a woman. I wonder about that from time to time.

If there is anything to this I think it is tied into our level of awareness.

Of course then again, it could all be nothing leaving us mere ticket holders in the gene-pool lottery.

Pope calls for the laity to 'witness'.

picked up the following post in a catholic community - i've no reason to believe it isn't genuine.. i was wondering how jw's might react to this news knowing, as most of them do, that the pope recently called their 'evangelising work' a "counterfeit" of the true apostolic zeal.. *****begin*****.

exhorts lay people to become missionaries of society .

Though it may not have come down as official edict the RCC has been trying to breath life into this laity-as-missionaries idea for at least a few years now. All churches have the same scripture readings and they are selected years in advance. You can often tell by this just what the church is trying to emphasis for up to a decade in the future.

Your post confirms that they have been trying hard to build a foundation for this idea. I wonder what the WT would say for the reason you stated and in light of the fact the WT claims they are the only ones making such efforts to "witness the good news". Interesting.

God's will or free will?

i've heard many people tell me about bible prophesy.

if the bible can predict future events then it stands to reason that those events are predetermined and man has no choices in this world.

think about all the choices you've made in your life and how different life for you would be if you had done things differently.

Hi All,

Interesting topic. On this whole predetermination thing, I wonder. If all was known to God before-hand, and I would assume Jesus was in the know being as he was well-connected, how come Jesus didn't do something to thwart the horrors that would be committed in his name? Why didn't he issue a simple order like "Thou shalt not slaughter each other in my name?" Surely these atrocities were known to God before they happened. Why would he let people do such things? All were pretty sure they had the truth and that they were doing God's will. They had the old testament to look to for examples of Godly warfare--surely the Crusades were meant as a Godly war. Now we look at it as barbarism at its worst and yet it is no worse than what God's people were doing before Jesus came.

I do not understand how an all-loving God could just stand by and watch the horrors that are committed daily and excuse it with "He's letting us use free will". It all seems so cruel to me--not loving at all.

Foot and Mouth Disease Hits my Town.

jw`s will find their attempts at house to house work severly impeded in the rural county of somerset, england.. this afternoon i was driving back home to weston super mare along the a370.

as i approached the town i noticed barriers being erected across the junctions to the `b` roads which lead into the countryside.

across the barriers are signs which read: "foot and mouth disease.

I'm glad to see you are here-missed you lately at H2O.

I've seen a great deal about this terrible disease on the news, sounds like it's getting worse every day. It's horrible to see those huge piles of livestock burning. Can imagine the smell!

I wish there was something we could do--for now you have our sympathies.
