Morning Kent, you madman,
I understand your frustration with Americans basic unawareness of the world around them and their seemingly apathetic attitude toward the rest of the world.
The thing of it is is that there are many kinds of people here and, almost more importantly, various income levels. I realize America is a very wealthy nation (I mean I *am* an American) however there are a lot more people than you think who are very far from wealthy. The rest of the world might be surprised to find how many people work 2 or 3 really crappy paying jobs just to make the rent and groceries. They barely have any time for their kids, much less themselves. I know when this was my story I was far more concerned if I had milk/food for the kids and would make the rent/mortgage that month. Believe you me, I was so overwhelmed with trying to "get by" the last thing on my mind was what corrupt government in the world we were chumming around with.
Then of course we have those who have plenty and their big worries are catching that sale at the Clinique counter, their next social event or how to cheat on their taxes/hide income. There are many with their heads in the sand, who gobble up the garbage/propaganda called news (or worst of all "talk-radio"!!!) and just go on their happy, self-absorbed way--thinking they are "in the know". If *only* they knew.
It is thanks to some who *are* in the know and work very hard to make facts known that at least *some* Americans *do* know and *do* care about the world around them and try to do what they can to make it a better place. One way to do this is to really learn what is going on in the political world, discuss the issues (instead of recipes or the lastest fashion etc.), and make informed choices in the voting booth. There is also the power of the pen. When there is enough pressure from constituents the elected officials *do* tend to pay attention because they know if they do not, well they can kiss the trough they feed at good-bye.
I know in my heart it is those who are far too busy making ends meet who would be the most passionate about making the necessary changes in US government. I know my own bout with poverty certainly helped me in this way.
Just putting in my two cents worth re: we aren't all the same and we aren't *all* self-absorbed, greedy bastards.

Julie, of the Gives a Shit Klass
