You're so right about the Do Not Calls. My first door was a Do Not call that someone "forgot" about. Don't know why I didn't just quit right then, lol.
Later,another sister and I had a gun drawn on us by a person who had requested to be on the Do Not Call list!That was a great deterrent for me, but I don't know about the legalities of that method.
As far as the "We worship Satan" thing. That may or may not work. For whatever odd reason, I wouldn't have had a problem talking to someone who claimed to worship Satan. I did see it work on one sister, though. She went up to the door and was back to the car in about two seconds, lol.
There was a witch in my former congregation's territory. She lived in a "uniquely decorated" house. Quite a few of the younger ones in the congregation liked to visit her. One young sister even had her for a return visit, until said young sister faded, lol.

What is your Favorite Scene from a Movie?
by Sweetp0985 ini thought about this topic last night for the board when watching one of my favorite movies.. 1. the man from snowy river- the part when they are going after the expensive colt and they get to the edge of the cliff and all the other riders stop and "jim" keeps going and leaps down the cliff after the wild horses.
i absolutely love that part of the movie...everytime its on i have to watch it, if not just to see this part only.. 2. love and basketball- when she tells him she will play for his heart...awwww first time i started crying.
and then the music they had playing in the background made it even worse.

I have given up trying to watch that movie. It never fails to put me to sleep.
Some of my favorite scenes are:
Black Stallion-The interaction between Alec and The Black when they are first stranded on the island. Most of this scene is set to music, and it was absolutely wonderful to watch on the big screen.
Man From Snowy River-When he cracks his whip, plunges over the cliff, and rides his horse down the mountain after the brumbies
A Little Princess-When the mysterious Indian neighbor fixes up the attic, and Becky and Sarah are jumping about joyously in the snow (and love that song "Kindle My Heart")
Secret of Roan Inish-Fiona's experiences on the island while she'd alone, her dreams of the Selkie woman and her mother, and the end when she and her family....can't tell, it's a spoiler
Sleepy Hollow-When Johnny Depp is examining the first corpse with those "scientific" glasses and declares "He's de CAP it tated." I have no idea why I find that funny. Just sick I guess;)

A caul is now commonly known as the amniotic sac. It is said that babies who are born with the amniotic sac still intact are prone to being intuitive. The sac often breaks before active labor, or late in labor, but sometimes stays intact through the delivery.
One of my sons was actually born with a caul (the amniotic sac covering his face at delivery). He had a complete knot in his umbilical cord, too. It was an interesting birth, to say the least.While I'm not sure if he has any predictive type psychic abilities, he is a very sensitive young man, and tends to easily pick up on the emotions of others.He's totally different from my other sons. -

Interesting topic, Min, and something I've been thinking about lately.
I have:
Started to recycle seriously now. We have cut the amount of trash that we have on trash day about 60%-whooohoooo!
Learned to feel proud about my decision to buy used items as much as I possibly can. I also view this as a form of recycling, and the money goes directly into the community to either the previous owners, or to the various charity thrift shops that I use.
Volunteered in a special needs elementary classroom.
Volunteered to write articles for the school paper on the subject of domestic violence, and to help out at the domestic violence awareness events that my college held.
Participated in the adopt-a-highway program
Participated in food drives (always did this,and allowed kids to, even as a JW)
Helped out at children's events at my kids' schools and at my college
Was a 4-H volunteer (did this as a JW, despite the flack)
I plan to:
Check into being a polling place volunteer
Calling this week to join a local river clean up day
Donate blood (I have one of those types they beg for, lol)
Keep looking for ways to volunteer that will jive with my school schedule, as I now understand how important community contribution truly is, and how most often, I gain so much more from the experience than I give. -

A womans tears
by Maverick inthis is really for the guys, but i know the woman here will have some great insights for us stupid men so i hope y-all will offer up your best.. when the woman i am with starts to tear up or cry i feel totally helpless and useless.
this is one of the most dreaded situations i as a man can ever find myself in.
my older brother, the retired police chief, would get angry if a woman started to cry when he was writing her a ticket, he felt it was an act.

Wow, good topic for me, Mav. I've really just started to realize the impact the WTS had on my life, and I've been spontaneously crying alot lately.
I think as far as a woman's motive goes, it really depends on the individual and the culture they live in.I know a few women who've used crying as a tool to get what they want (and some men too, actually), but I don't know too many who do this.
I've never used crying as a manipulative tool myself. I feel very uncomfortable when I spontaneously start crying in front of others. When it happens, all I want in the world is to find a quiet place to go be alone and compose myself.
I have spent all my life being force fed the message that women are "the weaker vessel" and somehow unable to rationally handle crisis that arise in their lives, and this attitude really frustrates me (especially since I've seen women in my life handle many horrible situations very well).Because of this prevalent myth, if a woman shows any sort of "feminine" emotion in a tense situation, she is immediately thought to be trying to manipulate the situation ('cause we all know that ever since Eve, women have been manipulating men, lol).
For me and most other women, crying is simply a catharsis, a way to express deeply felt emotions that we cannot verbally express.
As far as the subject of men and crying, I don't think the notion that men should "have a stiff upper lip" is all that healthy, personally. A feeling expressed through crying is cathartic. A feeling that is bottled up inside can cause all kinds of problems, including physical illness (been down that path myself). It would be nice if people could do whatever it is they need to do to deal with their feelings, without being labelled.
I'm fortunate to have joined a community of folks who don't have the old school view of the display of emotion being somehow innapropriate. I've seen women and men crying over loved ones who've died, I was very touched to watch a man cry after he sang a song he wrote for his new son, and I've been supported myself with hugs, kind words, (and lots of tissues,lol) when the pain I held down so long from my JW years has unexpectedly welled up and escaped through my tear ducts.I still have the urge to run for cover when this happens (and usually do), but now I know that I'm not being judged as somehow being weak or incapable when it happens, just healing.
I wish the whole world could have that kind of support. -

by BrendaCloutier inok, this is a brain fart i had last night as i was falling asleep.. growing up jw i somehow developed the belief that women were not made in the image of jehovah, as men were, hence we were inferior to men, and therefore the requirement to be subservient.
it's been so long that i don't know if this was the teaching or my assumption.. counterpoint:.
god created adam in his image.. god then took one of adam's ribs and created eve (sounds more akin to cloning to me, after all it's only one silly chromosome that separates the sexes).. eve was created from adam who was made in god's image.. hence eve is made in god's image.. personally, i think when god made adam, he said "i can do better than that!".

it would seem that many became atheist after being deceived by the wts.
unlike other religions, the wts was very precise in what was to happen during the 20th century.

Nope. Although I have a very different concept of divinity than that of an old man with a white beard up there in the sky somewhere.
I have a need to be spiritual. I have all of my life. I don't care if there is a grain of truth to whether or not divinity exists, or if I am just imagining it, and making use of archetypal, mythological images to bring meaning to my life. It makes me whole and happy, and that's all I care. I will not permit my experiences with the WTS to separate me from something I have valued all of my life.
Reality and reason are a wonderful thing, but not if they drain all of the joy out of your existence, and make you so pessimistic you have no vision of a better future. Play and imagination are wonderful things, too. Some of our greatest minds were playful, and their imaginations spanned far beyond what "normal" society considered reasonable. It's almost always been the dreamers, the visionaries, who ignite the fire of new ideas, ideas that start out as great controversies and heresies,then are refined by science and reason.
The words of Bozo the clown or Barney can be just as meaning-full to a child as the theories of Einstein are to an adult.It all depends on the subjective experience of each individual. -

I haven't commited a "sin of the flesh" yet, despite the fact that it's been two years since I left, and I have an entirely different belief system now (I do celebrate holidays, though, so have returned to "Babylon the Great," which is one of their major rants on immorality).
Funny thing is, I drink less often since I left. I think I was using alcohol to numb the pain of all the crap that was happening when I was JW.I think a lot of JWs drink heavily,staying just one step away from drunken revelry for the same reason.
It's odd, because I haven't forbidden myself from any "taboo" activity. I just don't have the desire to do any of the stuff the WTS considers immoral. I'm too busy waking up every morning, happy to be able to exercise free will.
Free will-now there's a subject the WTS doesn't talk about often;)
