It seems that anyone can use the Bible to support whatever they want.Agreed undercover. Haven't been on these forums for a year yet, but its become very clear there is a great amount of time spent on here trying to defend the bible - slavery, genocide, infanticide, scientific inaccuracies, etc. And every bible supporter seems to have come up with their own justifications for continued belief.

I can't speak to the authenticity of the dialog or precise details, but 'Creation' is a good movie in my opinion.
Agreed AK Jeff...I watched 'Creation' just this past weekend. Was surprised it had less to do with his actual research, but moreso, his personal struggles with his marriage, the church, etc. I found it quite moving. -

Confession iPhone app blessed by Catholic bishop
by unshackled ina confession app for your iphone is just absurd.
can humans get any nuttier?
but really...this is not a whole lot nuttier than confessing to a man dressed up in robes proclaiming to be your mediator between you and some supreme invisible being.. http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2011/02/08/technology-confession-app-catholic-church.html#socialcomments.

BTS...thanks for the tips. Just thought it was an interesting development to discuss. It has garnered a fair bit of attention in the media, heard a few radio programs discussing it. Some consider the idea of using your smartphone to track your sins comical. Heard a few comedians poke fun at it. And I agree, I think it is silly. Apparently, you do not. Got it.

$1.99? Give me a break, nobody is getting rich at that price. That is far less than the "suggested contribution" for a year's worth of Watchtowers and Awakes!
So, do you know what it costs to develop an iPhone app? It can range from $25,000 to $150,000 depending on the complexity. Twitterrific, for instance, cost $125,000. Now selling an app at $1.99, you would need to sell only 62,814 copies to recoup that development cost.
62,814 may sound like a lot, but when you consider how many Catholics there are it wouldn't take long to surpass that. Especially for an app that has "blessed" by a Catholic bishop. Pretty much sponsored by the Catholic Church.
So someone will likely make money off of people thinking they need a sin tracker to help be accepted by their "loving" god.

Christians afraid of Carl Sagan?
by SweetBabyCheezits inin looking for a particular reference to carl sagan's the demon-haunted world: science as a candle in the dark, i stumbled across this website:.

it appears the page was created as a rebuttal against carl's book.

Does seem rather silly to use the term "afraid". They are just ideas, you either accept them or not. Though I think it is more common than I'd like to think.
Related side story....I have a sister who has faded, has been out for years. But hasn't really scrutinized much about her JW indoctrination, seems to avoid it. Think her turning point was the family shunning.
SO when I mentioned reading The God Delusion, she expressed she thought about it but felt afraid to read it. Interesting. Guess there are some things, some people don't want to know, or are afraid to explore.
@Brodan...yeah Contact was alright. Would've preferred if Matthew Mcougnahay wasn't in it though.

I can think of a lot worse scenarios where people take stated viewpoints as facts: Fox News, Glenn Beck, Jerry Falwell, etc. Thanks to the internet this is the age of information but, unfortunately, also very much the age of misinformation.
That said, I can see how someone that believes in the supernatural wouldn't appreciate Sagan's viewpoints. Nathan Natas nailed it.

There is no way sceince can answer why the universe is the way it is or why we are here
Philosophy can't answer that either. Philosophical thoughts on "why we are here" are just guesses. No one knows the answer.

Is Atheism a 'Personal Rebellion' Against God?
by leavingwt ini try to understand why other people believe what they believe.
the author discussed in the article below evidently wants to hide his head in the sand and paint all atheists with the same broad, incorrect brush.
it's as if he's never actually sat down with an atheist and had friendly conversation.. .

There's an invisible aardvark names Eddy that lives in my attic. He is the supreme ruler of the universe. If you don't believe in him then you are personally rebelling against him. May Eddy have mercy on your soul.

questions you could never get answers to
by deservingone26 ini remember when i was going to the meetings there were questions that i had which i could never get good answers too.
just one of them i had was how to explain how you knew if you were one of the one hundred and forty four thousand.
i remember trying to explain this to one of my work friends and the reasoning of you just know, like you know if u are a boy or girl sounded stupid to him.

When I was a young child I remember asking my parents "if murder and violence are bad why did Jehovah have armies that he supported, and they killed thousands?"
Answer: Things were different back then.
That never settled it for me...I was confused how a god that was supposed to be the epitome of love and kindness, and his ways never changed thru time indefinite, would use war only a few thousand years ago. But today it is bad?

If you could choose one book to suggest to a JW...
by SweetBabyCheezits ini'm sure this isn't an uncommon question but i'll ask anyway.. suppose you had the chance to suggest one book, essay, article, or other writing with the goal of helping a loved one wake up... which one would it be?.
bear in mind the goal is to subvert the programmed hair-trigger defenses that cause a complete shutdown of critical thinking.
this automatically excludes anything that would directly place the wt society or its history in a negative light.

@Mr. Falcon...Cool Hand Luke is a great movie.
