Here's a Discovery mag article tempering the speculative rumors that they're announcing having found extraterresterial life. More likely it wil be they discovered positive conditions for life.

A world without God? What would it be like...
by Snoozy inanother thread got me to thinking..something i do once in a while .

Tammy...I agree with Berengaria. Sounds to me like you are a good person, simple as that...you don't need belief in a god to be that.
I think doing good for the sake of good, is TRUE goodness (if that makes sense). Doing good because a god will punish you if you don't, and give you presents if you do is shallow and selfish. I'm not accusing you of being that, just saying that most religions are based on reward/punishment. It's a paradox.
Belief in a god is a potentially dangerous and powerful "drug" for the mind. This is a dangerous combination: believing the most supreme being in the universe is on your side, combined with believing he has an agenda for you to play out...but the catch is, everyone determines/chooses for themselves what that agenda is. For example, they think shunning is showing love, but the very act is pure evil. But their belief that this supreme being wants them to do it, fuels their actions of hate. Without that "god fuel" would their be less hateful actions? I believe so.
But anyways...Terry and Berengaria nailed it...
"If we were without the idea of god, things would be better. The world is without god, it is the notion that causes so much trouble."

"Are science and the Bible compatible?"

many truths about god are beyond thescope of science.

The bible is just fiction. We could also discuss "Are science and the Harry Potter books compatible?"...but that would be a waste of time.

Ancient humans
by goddidit indoes anyone know of any good examples of evidence that humans were around well before the jw claim, that doesn't rely on anything they so casually dismiss, like radiometric dating?.

Hi Black Sheep...I'm fairly new on here but should've known that almost every subject has been scoured. There's a lot to filter in that previous thread...so I'll work my way thru it.
I haven't seen this movie Zeitgeist, just that couple minutes in that YouTube video. But finding out it moves on to conspiracy theories about 9/11 and the Federal Reserve seems rather dubious.
Though the claims made in that one segment I've read and seen elsewhere. First one that comes to mind is Bill Maher's Religulous documentary. Which, come to think of it, probably been scoured on here as well.

This great video somewhat relates to this. Christianity originated from Egyptian mythology...

Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking, but its a start...
http://www.truth-saves.com/Never_a_Flood.php
It is specifically pointing out the reasons a global flood never happened. But if you scroll down to the bottom of the page it explains the population of the earth around the supposed flood time. As well as the population well before the garden of eden fable.
That whole website is actually pretty good, check out the other sections too.

Agreed Yan Bibiyan. Although not impossible but highly unlikely someone with that education would read the 80s Evolution or Creation book and accept it as fact. It is complete BS. The number of biologists that accept the fact of evolution is around the 99% area. There certainly are some that accept evolution and also believe in a god of some sort, but I'd be amazed if they take the bible literally or even believe it was written by a god. Let alone accept the drivel in the Evolution/Creation book.
I question most of their "real life examples". They're always throwing out stuff like "a young man named Thomas was feeling lost in life, until Jehovah Witnesses knocked on his door. He is now a regular pioneer!" Most of it is pure fiction...or rather, pure propaganda.
IF it is a real life example, it would be because the person was dumb as a stump.

Organized Religions are like slot machines at a casino...

Hey Ding, as a generalized statement on the vast majority I think it rings true. But yes, there are likely good examples such as the Salvation Army. Though I don't know the ins and outs of their operation at all, in terms of money distribution, etc. The fact that all religious orgs get tax exemption is a slippery slope. Greed usually creeps in somewhere.
